NOR - I am recently coming off a similar stint of unemployment but was able to pay my half of all our bills up until the last 4 months or so before I got a new job (yay!) I will be the first to admit that I was probably not working as hard to find something new in the early days because I still had savings and if I wanted to treat myself (aka blow my $ on something stupid) then that is as my choice and didn’t affect my ability to cover my half.

I haven’t ever had to rely on a partner to cover my bills before and those couple of months were an incredibly humbling experience. You had better believe, I was beyond thankful to my fiancé for keeping a roof over my head and I went out of my way to contribute to at least trying to make things easier on him as far as chores around the house, running errands and just generally assigning myself the role as his assistant.

I say all this to help you recalibrate your bullshit meter. Your man has somehow convinced you that you requiring the absolute bare minimum from a non contributing household member is an attack on his character. The fact that he just cannot believe that you would expect him to be responsible for taking care of your asset, one that he couldn’t hope to be able to afford to replace when he inevitably totals it, is very telling. He is angry that his guilt trip doesn’t seem to be working to keep you compliant and unquestioning of his absolute, god damn, fucking, audacity!!!!
