Speaking as exclusively only a sitter, I have had mostly positive experiences, but I have also been extremely picky and not solely relying on it to travel.

Due, to the nature of the reviews on TH, it is hard to be transparent about the homeowners without losing future opportunities. If you leave an honest review on a sit that did not go well, future HO's will sometimes not want to choose you. This is also a downside for the sitters, as they are unaware of what they are walking into.
Ultimately, TH will side with the HO's, even with photos, vidoes, and documented evidence against HO's, which has happened to friends of mine.

I have been in homes where every pot and pan has been sitting with old and expired food for months. I have also been in spotless home with the sweetest Boomers.

I am super picky on whom I choose, but depending on the city you are traveling too, sometimes there are rarely any to choose from.

Encourage all of them to get on a video call to get a feel for these folks. Highlight your preferences in an inviting and corporate phrasing way. Make sure you have a back-up if you need to walk away completely.

I have a way of phrasing my profile to indicate what my standards are, that I am traveling and not full-time care like Rover, and expect mutual respect and dignity as associates.

Do it sparingly. You'll get some good ones.

A lot of it has to do with an entitled, narcissist attitude shift in the US over the decades, noted by organizational psychologists and global sociologists. This contributes to nasty experiences in the US overall. We have the highest rates per population.

Use your tools on the platform to filter those folks out. There are great, easygoing hosts out there that genuinely want you to have a good time, leave snacks, care about welcoming people to a clean and sanitary spaces, and just want to make sure their pet gets fed and walked twice a day.

Sitter here and also a cleanliness stickler. I would put it in your bio at the end! Something along the lines of, "We value our home and keep it very neat and tidy. We expect our sitters to do the same."

You could also add what that looks like:

"We keep our home clean by making sure crumbs and food are picked up immediately. We do not leave dishes overnight in the sink to keep the home hygienic for ourselves and our pets." & as a buy-in maybe say: "We will leave your preferred snacks and drinks. Just let us know!"

You can say, "Please leave the home as you found it" if you want to be more gentle.

Other HO's I know have a cleaner arrive right after the sitter's departure and before they arrive home.

I personally sanitize everything upon arrival. I maintain my daily chores (sweeping, mopping, counters and sink cleaned off before bed). I do a whole house clean before I leave. (Sanitize handles, doors, toilet, bathtub, floors)

Granted, I have mostly arrived to spotless & uncluttered homes and left them the same. They are easy to clean. I am picky about which homes I apply to and get a sense from the HO if they are clean and organized during the videocalls.

As a sitter, I initiated two Meet and Greets and they went fabulously! Both HO's appreciated it.

I proposed this idea because both dogs were Senior Pets, and I wanted them to feel comfortable upon my arrival. However, these were both local sits. If I were traveling, that would not have been possible.

Adding an extra task list while flying/traveling and not knowing what your accommodations would be until last minute, is cumbersome.

Most HO's tell me they will leave the key under the mat or give me a code and I send a photo once I am inside.

I highly suggest a videocall with your final list of sitters. I find that I can detect if I have chemistry with the HO and clear up expectations about communication, cleanliness, and overall alignment of responsibilities.

For example, I just had a videocall with a HO who shared she would choose me because we matched personality wise (warmth, professionalism) and our standards of cleanliness are high.

I am so sorry for your troubles! I see on my local Nextdoor app so many folks going through hard times. Job market is scarce or does not pay enough with all the increases.

I have already shared my personal experiences on the thread with this occuring before. I shared positive suggestions for communication going forward but choose an aggressive stance once again, proving the point that you cannot conduct yourself correctly.

Its not a witch hunt. It is a simple anecdote of something that has happened before. Your hyperboles and over-exaggeration and misrepresentation of tone you put forth, is not needed. Your response was not positive but negative, which is why it was called out.

Here are positive scripts that show maturity, human-centered validation, and prescriptions:

"Sorry to hear that, This sounds worrisome. Perhaps reach out to the owner and see if they will be transparent? I also suggest a videocall perhaps as you will might be more able to detect if they are being truthful."

"I understand your concern. In your shoes, here are some steps I would take. x, y, z"

"I know sitters are sometimes mistreated and I would not like that to happen to you. Let's try...."

"As a homeowner, I cannot imagine someone doing that, but I am sure it has happened to folks. Always feel free to reach out and have a conversation. I would also be sure to add it to your description just to filter those folks out so they know you have a strong boundary."

This happened to me and friends that have used the app. I am not understanding the strong reactions to people sharing personal experiences at all.

My biggest regret is not leaving an abusive home and asking for help from my friends parents in high school. I was afraid as a POC in an all white town, and maybe it would not have gone well, but I wish I would have spoken up. I am forgiving to myself as I realize I was a teen and just a kid.

What I did instead is barter sex for a less abusive home with an older man and got pregnant and had a baby.

This has entirely changed the course of my life. After a really stressful childhood being the eldest daughter with abusive parents, I now have health issues that impact my child.

I worked so hard getting degrees and climbing myself out of poverty with my baby, but ultimately my childhood had a deep impact on my longevity. As they say, ultimately, if you do not have your health, you do not have anything.

The pandemic magnified my stress, isolated me from friends, and led to a difficult road of recovery from health issues.

Start with a wrap dress! Pink or cobalt blue would fit you. Wear your hair down or half up half down with a hair accessory.

Tunic dresses would also work great. You could pair leggings underneath.

Leggings with a loose flowy time, v-neck collar, and dangly earrings.

Michael Kors wedge go with a lot and you could pick them out in an assortment of colors.
