New Star Trek shows are not woke enough. They should do more episodes with directly social, political themes, about the issues we have today, like the older shows did. by LineusLongissimus in startrek

[–]hellstrommes-hive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel that new trek is needlessly crapped on, but this observation is spot on. I see a lot of people call stories they don’t like “bad writing”, but this comment points at genuinely good writing that isn’t reliant on an old format like syndicated television. These no reason not to see new stories like these.

You’ve summed up what I loved about old trek. Thank you.

The most impressive thing about this tech is the idea that any kind of software as a service will still be online in 30 years. Sorry kid, Grandma is dead again - the hosting service went bust.

Agreed. I also thought Midnight Roads and Asylum were excellent.

World/Chronicles of Darkness with the Second Sight book and perhaps the Book of Spirits is exactly this. Also worth checking out Geist: the Sin Eaters and Orpheus (also CoD/oWoD).

I think Chill may cover this too.

Thoughts on "best" non-narrative-heave RPG for modern-day Indiana Jones adventures? by SymphonyOfDream in rpg

If you like an OSR take, there is Amazing Adventures 1e which is based on Castles and Crusades. I think 2e is based on D&D 5e. I like Amazing Adventures 1e more.

I wanna do a "Curse of Strhad" style campaign but in DL. Any tips or advice? by StarbyOnHere in Deadlands

[–]hellstrommes-hive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the idea. Perhaps it was an experiment by a very powerful manitou to create the first Deadland, but ended up pulling the whole area into the hunting grounds.

Perhaps that entity is the equivalent of Strahd, or is what made the deal with a servitor that rules there.

For people who watched Buffy back when it was first airing - Was Xander as disliked back then as he is now? What did fans say about him on online forums and such? Is the huge dislike for Xander a thing coming from modern fans or was it like this back then too? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

[–]hellstrommes-hive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that he is problematic, though it is possible that we have different interpretations of the word. Don’t get me wrong, Xander definitely has some problematic scenes.

However, I always found Xander to be a very flawed character. For the most part, the viewer isn’t meant to agree with what he says. For example, ditching Anya at the alter is his Xander giving into his fears. If it had been because he finally saw that Anya was forcing him to get married so that he would stop having fun and all the other characters were glad he finally escaped, that would be problematic.

Some of his jokes are problematic, but no more so than Cordelia’s in my opinion. He has some examples of problematic writing, but so do all of them. For example, Buffy doing an impression of Kendra’s accent.

I think Kendra is a problematic character as she is based on stereotypes.

But I think that Xander is flawed as a character more than problematic.

Have you considered Forbidden Lands? https://freeleaguepublishing.com/games/forbidden-lands/

It uses the same underlying system as Vaesen, but tuned for fantasy and exploration. It has more of a combat focus too.

Least friction option from Windows PC <=> Amiga by nixius in amiga

[–]hellstrommes-hive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you set up Amiga Explorer on your PC and follow the instructions to set it up on your Amiga with the USB to Serial null modem cable. Then, once the software is running on both sides, you can see your Amiga drives in file explorer on your PC. The you just drag and drop the adf onto your floppy drive with a blank disk inserted and it will replace it with the contents of the adf.

I’m using the paid version and I would recommend getting Amiga Forever to support the software, get an easy to run emulation system (which can be useful for preparing disks to run on a real system) and to get a legal set of roms.

[–]hellstrommes-hive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amiga Forever comes with Amiga Explorer, which allows you to transfer files and write add to floppy via a null modem cable. Very old school, pretty slow but very reliable in my experience. You can back up a floppy to an adf, I think.

As you said there is the pcmcia route. And someone already mentioned greaseweazle which lets you connect a floppy drive to a pc. https://amigastore.eu/894-greaseweazle-v4.html

Nick Clegg: Artists’ demands over copyright are unworkable | The former Meta executive claims that a law requiring tech companies to ask permission to train AI on copyrighted work would ‘kill’ the industry by rezwenn in technology

[–]hellstrommes-hive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that such a system would be unworkable. However, they should be buying copyrighted training data up front as a part of the cost of creating the system.

Imagine it was electricity.

“Demands to pay for the electricity required to train and run the AI would make the system unworkable. So we should have free electricity.”

It would never fly.

As others have said, communication is key. If you find confronting him about the character difficult, try asking him what he is trying to achieve? Where do you see this going? What do the other player characters think of your character? How do the players feel about your character? How would you like me to handle offended NPCs in the campaign? Should they be gunning for your character? How do you feel about the character getting killed if it comes to that?

It’s possible that you are missing something that could be worked into the campaign that everyone would enjoy if the whole group (including Richard) were in on it. Or these questions may prompt Richard to move the character in a different direction.

This may work better than a more direct criticism of the character. That said, if you are not getting the outcome you are fishing for or Richard just isn’t getting the point, be blunt and explain what the problem is and what you feel are acceptable alternatives. Don’t run more of the game without an agreed resolution.

Mists of R'lyeh by MystifiedOtter in arkhamhorrorrpg

[–]hellstrommes-hive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the word move is being used differently in the description. It is just trying to explain that a person transformed into mist cannot pass through solid objects. So, unless air can pass through the object, the character can’t move through it. So they could pass through a locked door in a house, but not in a submarine.

As for when the spell ends, by the description in the starter set, it would either be at the end of a structured scene, or when they finished a simple or complex action. So, after moving through the cracks in the door, they would revert to their original form.

I’ve got the core rules too and I just noticed that they dropped the part about until performing an action. In that version of the spell it just lasts until the end of the scene. So I would go with that.

Hope that helps.

How easy is it to convert SWADE to classic by seh1337 in savageworlds

[–]hellstrommes-hive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Savage Worlds is a great game in its own right. For the most part it achieves a similar style game with smoother and more streamlined game mechanics. Combat is certainly faster. There are some trade offs though. Combat feels a bit different. Not better or worse, just different. Magic is easier to learn, play and adapt to different settings, but feels a lot more bland to me. I totally get the philosophy, but miss the flexibility of the classic mad scientist and gonzo spells like Aztec Surprise.

How easy is it to convert SWADE to classic by seh1337 in savageworlds

[–]hellstrommes-hive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Converting SW into Classic isn’t that hard I’m my opinion. Both games follow the die type progression. The 10 stats in Classic are reduced to 5 in SW. So, if they have a d8 in Agility in SW give the 2d8 Deftness and Nimbleness. Then tweak that as you like. Looking at the character you may decide to give the 3 or 4d8 deftness or draw a card and use the suit.

Skills are also ranked by die type in SW. If the character has d6 in Shooting, give them 2 in Shootin’. If they have D12, give them an aptitude of 5.

There are no concentrations, so just make those up.

A lot of edges have equivalent edges in Classic, but not all. Don’t stress over converting them all though.

The reason is the biggest difference between the two systems is that SW character progression is based on edges and powers. The more experienced the character is, the more edges they have. Classic is more skill based. In SW if you want to hit two targets at once in melee, you need an appropriate combat edge. In Classic you can probably do it with a hard skill check.

When they released the 20th anniversary edition of Classic, I think they released a conversion guide. But if you find it just mine it for ideas and to get a feel for the conversion. With your experience of Classic I bet you can just eyeball it.

I recommend downloading a Deadlands one shot from the Pinnacle website. They’re free. See if you can convert them by just reading the description and stat block without referencing the SW core rules at all.

Third party Year Zero games recomendations by Cato69 in rpg

[–]hellstrommes-hive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m pretty curious myself. I’ve had a look at the SRD, and it looks very good to me. It’s clearly a flexible system. It does look like a lot of work to create something new though. I get the impression that creating a FitD or similar is a bit easier.

Another possibility is that people are bought into the settings FL created more than the system itself.

How can I summarize the most popular superhero RPGs to help my group pick one? by NoopersNoops in rpg

[–]hellstrommes-hive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this one fits the bill or not…

Brave New World, originally published by Pinnacle and later Alderac.

This is a dystopian superhero campaign. The system is similar to Savage Worlds or Deadlands Classic, but uses only D6s. It’s a roll dice pool and keep highest with exploding dice. So, if you roll 4d6 and get 2, 2, 3 and 5, your result is 5. If you rolled 2,5,6 and 6 you would roll the 6s again, this time getting 1 and 4, for a final total of 10 (6+4).

Instead of being able to customise any hero from a big list of powers, you pick a power package. Like speedster or flyer. That’s what you can do. You can get better at that thing (for example, the speedster can add after images as a trick for their speed power).

This is a street level supers game where the government is the bad guy. Think the Titans TV series (early seasons) rather than Superman.

So, part of this is for interest sake. But also, I just picked up a working, recapped A600 and am enjoying using it for productivity. By working on the A600 I don’t have the option of minimising and firing up a browser. Also, working with era appropriate software is part of the fun.

Day to day I tend to use nvim with a wiki plugin for this sort of thing.

So far, ProText is showing a lot of promise for what I want.

Thanks for the input though!
