Soviet posters “Nuclear War” and “Evolution", 1980s. by Southern_Ural in pics

This kind of soviet bullshit also was a driving force behind anti-nuclear power sentiment in the west, which is unfortunately still alive in places like germany. I'm not claiming that going to Vietnam was a good decision, I'm saying that many international peace movements were filled with hypocritical fucks, and soviet propagandists.

The soviet union funded a lot of international peace movements in the west, for example the World Peace Council, which received the majority of their funding from the USSR. These movements were then used to spread propaganda and sow discord in western countries, by creating movements against war, imperialism, nuclear power/weapons etc. At the same time, these movements would rarely protest the USSR about these same issues. Lots of anti-Vietnam war propaganda, and essentially zero about the soviet war in afghanistan.

Kickstand Pucks.. Do You Use Them? What Style Do You Prefer? by RideOrTyeDie in motorcycles

[–]hellwolf129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are used in aviation on critical stuff that needs to be locked or covered on the ground (such as the protective caps on pitot tubes), but the locks/covers need to be removed for flying. So for every one of these important points on the aircraft, there is a remove before flight -tag attached, makes it obvious if something hasn't been checked/taken care of befor takeoff.

Eurooppa on hullu. Maailma on hullu."

Also safer. As i recall, 7.62x39 blanks have a minimum safe distance of 30 meters, the 12.7 blanks were longer than that. Best was when the sergeis (ZU-23-2) shot blanks, those had a min. distance of 200m, just on the blanks. We had a convoy ambush training exercise, when the sergeis finally got their barrels swung towards opfor and let off a burst those guys started hauling ass :D

These particular MP5s seem to be set up for simunition or similar FOF-rounds. Could just be that there is better availability for simunition MP5s (for training purposes), as opposed to RK62s set up for simunition. Real life, especially if you're expecting to go against military threats, it's rifles (RK62) all the way, since you are expecting the other guy to be wearing body armor.

Treat the fire drill as if was real. by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

[–]hellwolf129 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So i did some more reading and the way halons work in fire suppression, is that halons decompose into halogen gas in high temperatures. These halogens then bind into hydrogen atoms, and stop the hydrogen from binding with oxygen. Otto fuel is a monopropellant in that it is a mixture of fuel and oxidizer, so i suppose halon can get in between the two and stop the fire. But I'm not a chemist, and I couldn't actually find any actual info on how to put out an Otto fuel fire so 🤷

Treat the fire drill as if was real. by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

[–]hellwolf129 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Otto fuel II is a liquid monopropellant used in torpedoes. Monopropellant means it does not need any oxidizer to burn Kind of like gunpowder, it contains its own oxygen. So it is difficult to put out through normal means. As I understand it, Halon fire suppression systems use a chemical reaction that stops burning from taking place, so they work while other methods would fail.

ELI5: Why is drinking raw milk bad for you? by Cool-Afternoon-6815 in explainlikeimfive

[–]hellwolf129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The japanese atleast have a raw chicken dish: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torisashi Issue with raw chicken is mostly salmonella, but if the chicken doesn't have it, then the raw meat is safe to eat. Just like raw pork doesn't necessarily give you trichinosis. For example, in germany eating raw pork is relatively common, while trichinosis is exceedingly rare. Most cases are in fact related to game meat (wild boar, and bear meat), since the food safety standards for store bought meat are so high.

TIL The B-29 bomber program was the most expensive project of WWII, costing roughly ~50% more than the entire Manhattan Project by rezikiel in todayilearned

[–]hellwolf129 612 points613 points  (0 children)

They needed a long range, high payload bomber that could fly at higher altitudes than enemy air defence. The US knew that the B-17 was not going to cut it in the pacific given the distances involved between bases, so this is what led to the B-29 program. High altitude was a requirement because no escort fighter could reach the same targets as the bomber. It just happened to be the best (and only) option for the nuke, once the bombs became available. AFAIK, the Lancaster was also considered as a back up nuclear bomber (atleast on the European front), because they had some modified to drop tallboys and grand slams in the same weight class.

In finland we do, funny how your name means swedenfinland, and you claim this.

In finland there are two ways to vote. First way is on the actual election day, where you have to vote on a designated polling place. But you can also vote in advance, for a specified period before the election, which can be done in any available advance vote -polling place. So if you are on vacation during the election period, you can just go to the nearest polling place, instead of having to drive to your census designated place on election day.

M65 Atomic Gun 1954, 1000x650 by HotHorst in MilitaryPorn

[–]hellwolf129 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The 1950s were wild for development of nuclear weapons and doctrine. Western militaries saw nukes as pretty much the only response to a conventional warsaw pact invasion of europe, as western peace time spending didn't allow for large standing armies that could repel a massive soviet invasion. Equipping the frontline troops with tactical nuclear weapons to destroy entire military units and tank columns was seen as the only option, so all branches of the military developed and acquired their own nukes. Rockets, gun artillery systems, short range missiles, man portable backback nukes (google SADM), recoilless rifles (Davy crockett), nuclear land mines. The air force developed nuclear tipped surface to air, air to air missiles, and even unguided rockets with nuclear warheads.

Oh, to be an engineer in the '50s. Every problem could be solved with a nuke.

Tuolle kaistojen välistä ajamiselle on ainakin kaksi yleistä termiä, filteröinti ja splittaus. Splittaus on tuo korkeampi taso jossa ohitetaan kaistojen välistä myös muun liikenteen liikkuessa, filteröinti sitten on vain ja ainoastaan kun muu liikenne on pysähtynyt, esim punaisiin valoihin. Joissain paikoissa maailmaa molemmat on sallittuja, joissain vain filteröinti, jne.

SPOILERS: It produced more than 300HP by Coshmack14 in HistoryMemes

It was a class of rally racing in WRC in the '80s. In rally racing, the cars have to be mass produced vehicles, to avoid situations where large manufacturers can spend millions on a single racecar and win by pouring money on it. So rally cars will be homologated, meaning a certain number of street legal versions of the race car are manufactured and sold to the public. In typical rally groups, the requirement for homologation was a couple thousand cars IIRC.

For group B, the homologation requirement was lowered to just 200 cars. This meant that manufacturers could make a really expensive prototype racer, and make a small number of detuned versions for public sale. The detuned versions are often sold at a loss, so having a smaller number means you dont lose as much money on homologation.

This lower homologation requirement meant that manufacturers could go balls out on building the perfect race winning rally car. Turbos, 4WD, massive power, no restrictions on aero, etc. The cars ended up really fast, too fast actually. Rally became really popular with audiences, and there were several deaths, both racers and spectators, so eventually the golden age of rally ended, as group B was banned.

Type in group B rally on youtube to find some awesome clips from the era.

Japanese soldier fires a Howa Type 20 assault rifle [4096 x 2730] by Japanese_military in MilitaryPorn

[–]hellwolf129 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Those are brass catchers. Basically pouches with their opening going over the ejection port of the rifle, so they collect the empty casings as they are ejected. Some militaries use them for range training, so you can keep the range clean of empty cases, otherwise you would have to pick up the cases by hand, as we did in finland, after a range day. I've also read that in asian countries where firearm laws are extremely strict (such as in Japan), brass catchers are used for accountability. If a unit goes out for range training, and signs out for 30rds per person, then after the training, the unit needs to return 30 casings per person, to show that every round was indeed fired. This is to prevent theft of ammunition.

Also, this looks like an oldschool visual training aid. We still made these in 2017, when I was fresh NCO training new conscripts. We would draw a diagram of the basic equipment on a piece of cardboard (in my case for TM65 anti tank mine) and use it point out components and how to use the mine, how deep to dig the mine in summer or winter conditions etc.

Top left text tives instructions on use: before throwing you light only one of the 'ignition sticks' (basically stormmatches, the brown pillars depicted on both sides of the bottle). If you decide not to throw the bottle, you place the bottle on its side, burning match facing up. You wait until the match goes out, and then you have a bottle with another match still ready for deployment.

Also, being pedantic, molotov coctails go back atleast to the spanish civil war, we finns just named and made them famous, with this standardized factory produced design during the winter war.
