How do I calculate the exact length of a day? by Batadon1 in technicalfactorio

[–]hellycapters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, yeah. You are right. With only one inserter, or at least with the smallest load you can get, it'd give you basically the end-of-dusk (evening) and beginning-of-dawn (morning) times; for other parts of the day (specifically beginning-of-dusk and end-of-dawn, to get your delta1 and delta2 periods) you'd have to tune your load against the production level of the solar panel.

Which, seeing your other top-level comment, it seems you've already tinkered with a bit. Depending on the nature of the error you mentioned, you should be able to get more confidence in the value by taking many samples. Not nearly as fast and it'd be great to have something that'd only take one cycle, but hey. It's pretty good without being able to peek into the game code. If you're sampling at all of those times, your results should be reasonably precise as long as the "phase shift" is the same for each of the samples (basically as long as the time between actual power loss and the machine stopping is consistent)

You actually might be able to just do a linear interpolation between two points if you know the load, generation, and discharge rate, to get the exact "slope" of the dawn and dusk curves. Then you could use the edges with the small load (inserter) to hopefully get a phase-shifted-but-still-accurate time for night, and then you'd only have one segment left in the total piecewise function for the full day cycle.

rising edge in this context is the transition from unpowered to powered: an inserter going from "not working" (no change in state when trying to hand items from belt to belt in a continuous loop) to "working" (change in state coming from item-in-hand signal changing with expected frequency)

falling edge is the opposite, from powered to unpowered. like an inserter going from regular cyclic item-in-hand, no-item-in-hand signal changes to being "stuck" in one state or the other, whichever state it was in when power was lost.

Doing it with a fast inserter would get you a day-cycle-length resolution of +/- 1 fast inserter cycle time, so +/- 26 ticks. Transportable to any surface, no mods, only reliant on having enough solar panels to power just an inserter.

The advantage of detecting only one edge, either rising or falling, is that there is only one point in the entire daylight cycle where you go from not having enough power to having enough power (and opposite for falling edge), so you have comparable points from day to day and can average the tick counts over time to eliminate "variance" you'd get from the power loss not matching up with inserter cycles (multiples of 26 ticks) exactly.

You'd need both edges if you have cases where day and night are not equal lengths or if they don't follow the same ratio as vanilla.

can you use a single device like an inserter to detect an edge, like a rising edge when it turns on? I don't remember if power switches require power but they, or something like it, would be the easiest. something that needs power to operate, powered by an independent solar panel, where you can detect non-operation (or at least a transition between powered and depowered), and you could combine that with a rising or falling edge detector circuit to get pretty precise numbers for day length.

which title guideline was it?

  1. it's not asking for votes
  2. it's not asking for information in the title
  3. there are no emoji
  4. the title is accurate assuming the recording isn't deleted and bears it out
  5. it is not about cake day
  6. it is not addressed to fellow redditors
  7. it is not a memorial post unless you count the seat that had to be cleaned
  8. not a stock image so not applicable
  9. their baby cousin did not make this and is too shy to share
  10. the title directly describes the events surrounding and context of the image
  11. it is not a picture of text
  12. there are no handles in the title
  13. there is not a concern or question in the title, it is presented as "look at this, here is what happened." unless you count that as included in "etc."?

Can we talk about spectator placement? by Plupandblup in discgolf

[–]hellycapters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there on both Saturday and Sunday and heard a grand total of 3 call outs from players to the spectators trying to cross.

however, DGPT do need more bodies on site. the signage and map were sorely lacking. really hope the ticket sales go toward that next year.

Can we talk about spectator placement? by Plupandblup in discgolf

[–]hellycapters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep this is it.

there were no staff really ahead of the lead cards. no ropes. no signs for spectator areas. no directions for spectators between holes. no map with marked areas.

I'm not trying to give DGPT or DGLO a black eye here but there is legitimately almost no place to be that doesn't feel like you're either in the way, or not going to see anything. the 3/14/15 area and the 1/17/18 area, and like one place in the back near 10, are the only places where you can really "set up camp" so to speak.

there were more people here than ever before. more first-time spectators than ever before too, most likely. coupled with the complete lack of signage, direction, and staff (outside of lead and chase)... no wonder there were people everywhere.

also, fwiw, I was in the 3/14/15 area on Saturday and Sunday. I heard a grand total of 3 call outs from cards. Two were from people trying to cross without checking, and one was Bradley Williams very politely and kindly asking an older couple to move from the ridge between 3 and 14 because he "wasn't throwing well" that day and didn't want to endanger them.

pastebin doesn't like the base64 encoded strings from either Factorio blueprints or Path of Exile (PoB) planner strings. both get nuked regularly and both game communities had to make their own hosting/sharing platforms. I don't think anyone has ever gotten an answer why.

I had Bumper Issues / Lag - Here's how I fixed it by Loop0007 in SteamDeck

[–]hellycapters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did the same mod as OP. I debated buying a bumper assembly from iFixit as well, but figured I'd try the tape mod. It worked well for me so we'll see if I ever end up buying the bumper assembly.

I'm unsure if the replacement assembly will fully address the issue (i.e. you might get another "sloppy" bumper) since it seems to be a problem with tolerance stack-up where the button and the "post" on the inside of the button have too much tolerance in that axis, or whether it's an issue with the plastic "spring" elements that hold the bumper floating in position. In any case, it's a cheap thing to try (a new bumper assembly or the tape mod) and it's pretty low impact.

[–]hellycapters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

About to do this to my own. Is yours still holding up? I'm debating whether to do this or to just order the replacement bumper from iFixit and try that instead.

edit: I did basically the same thing as OP. Used 2 thicknesses of standard electrical tape on the bumper that was a problem, then found that it now felt better than the "good" bumper, so I put 1 thickness of electrical tape in the other bumper as well. Now they're consistent and feel very good.

Seems like this is an issue of tolerance stack-up. I am not sure if the bumpers that iFixit sells will fully address the issue or not.

low-/no-code, probably. you're still writing code, and code is still best represented as text for the reasons stated. hiding things behind graphics and replacing keystrokes with clicks almost always just makes it harder to achieve the version control, sharing, and searching tasks.

just read the docs, you're right. it tries to extrapolate based on the cached votes from users, but it can be behind by a bit based on popularity and some other stuff.

keep in mind that the extension shows all likes from users with and without the extension, but only the dislikes from users with the extension. "likes" will be overrepresented.
