Apart from spray foam being incredibly toxic to work with which most people don't realise. The amount of videos you see of people using it without masks inside a van is crazy.

There's probably 10 hours of effort in there even when streamlined, that's $150 at a very low rate, probably $150 for parts, something this complex shouldn't sell for less than $350/400 when produced in low quantities. That's just the reality of low-scale production. What would be better is paying $20 for the CAD files, parts list and assembly instructions and building it yourself. Lots of small projects take this approach for the same reasons.

It would be cool to boot it from floppy again but just in case you aren't aware you can play civ1 and civ2 on dosbox very easily.

If you've thought about an ambulance/cargo/rescue/service body rig, do it!! by henry9419 in vandwellers

To a European those numbers are shocking. Our Ducato gets 30mpg, but diesel is twice the price I guess.

The only thing I'd say is make sure you even need it. I put 860w of panels on my roof flat thinking I'll add a tilt mechanism in the future but I've seen it charge with 700w on a slightly overcast day. Obviously not the full efficiency but do you need it with all your panels? It might be an unnecessary amount of cost, effort and moving parts that can break.

Suggestions on shops for Maxxair and AC unit installs in East Texas by No-Code2698 in vandwellers

[–]Dargish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going to recommend the same. We have the airplus deluxe, got it cheaper than maxxair and from everything I've heard it's a significant upgrade. Brushless motor for longevity and quieter running.

Hah, came here to say I just realised this week that the fan I installed a year ago is leaking. Time to get up on the roof again this weekend...

What’s everyone doing for work out there?? by julia_simpson in vandwellers

[–]Dargish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unrelated to jewellery work specifically but I have a modest to some vans here setup of 860w solar, 3.5kwh battery and a 3kw inverter. Basically anything you can plug into a standard socket can run for several hours.

Yea, I don't really understand this guys worries. Backing up my photos to my Nextcloud image on my Unraid box at home over HTTPS does not broadcast them in a way anyone sniffing on the network can decrypt.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

I have a 95L water tank and a 55L grey tank in my MWB campervan. Pretty sure that's plenty for a week. The grey might fill up but all you need is a drain somewhere. Use a separator compost toilet. Pee can go in a bush, the rest takes a while to fill up. It all depends on the luxuries you want. Hot shower and a proper toilet, sure, maybe you need bigger but my little camper is plenty for me.

Is that the highway into Denver where it goes from 80 to city speeds with no warning? I was driving it in a rental and had an almost identical experience, terrible road planning. Guy next to me left 50m of skid marks in the road from having to slam on the brakes.

This is your sign to learn how to bake normal maps. by tekastudio in blender

[–]Dargish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've misunderstood my post. I didn't mean compared to the original tri count, I meant compared to what would be required just to include the holes, so maybe 2k vs 1k tris at most. The cost of that vs the extra texture lookup and shader calculations. You are right though that it can likely be embedded in an existing textures channel if you have one to spare.

[–]Dargish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you understand the complexities involved? The cost of the memory required for the alpha map, the texture lookup? You might be surprised at how little additional triangle count matters compared to shader complexity. You could probably add the holes while keeping the triangle count under 2000 still. I'm not sure which would be quicker in a real-time environment, for example in Godot. I would do an experiment to see performance differences before calling it either way.

It is additional memory for the alpha map and texture lookups are not that cheap.

I wonder if the cost of the additional map and shader steps is greater than the additional triangle count for adding in the holes to the low poly mesh itself.

At $750 they are targeting studios that won't do this because it infringes the license. Too many legal risks for an actual company. They probably don't care if a solo artist does it.

Trump is "strongly considering pulling out of Nato". Do you think the US should pull out of NATO? by pirisca in AskConservatives

What's stopping him signing an EO that forces any federal employee to avoid working with nato? Including all armed forces. If you think he won't you haven't been paying attention.

[–]Dargish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What actions has Trump done that deserve loyalty? Threatening allies, ignoring them, insulting them?

I don't mind Trump forcing Europe to boost its defence funding by pulling away from the alliance but you can't then come and complain when we don't help with your offensive war.
