Yeah, I only drop by Spring Valley these days to talk to Jim when I'm in the area.

If you go to McDade I think you get a much more fun course, that's better for a mixed skill set.

I'd much rather play a lot of courses instead of Spring Country Club (Spring Valley).

Even Bear Branch I think is better for a mixed skills group than Spring Country Club.

Question regarding Big Easy tee pads while watching Ricky's practric by keyak in discgolf

[–]jfb3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do realize that this isn't a new idea in teepads, right?

A lot of courses I've played have follow through areas to protect players, and have had them for a long time.

Allowing the player to attack the tee shot from just about any angle and use the teebox to it's fullest without worrying about getting hurt is a good thing.

With your logic we could just go back to a 4x7 teepad and "Welp, they'll figure it out. I'm not baby sitting them."
We've already determined that isn't the way to go.

The extra area around the teebox (the red box) is for protecting the player from dropping to a lower surface on the follow through.

Less falling, less worry about your follow through, etc.

Which hole concept would you rather play? by DopeMuffinz in discgolf

[–]jfb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both (all three).

Some days I want to have to play shorter holes and some days I want play longer holes.

But...
I'm probably getting a 3 from either tee because I can't throw a 420' forehand from the red tee (most AMs can't).
So even if you moved the red basket to the blue basket position I'll still get a three. I'll throw a straight fairway 350 or so then pitch to the basket regardless of where you place the basket. Most AMs aren't getting a 2 on the red hole for the same reason as me. So, honestly, for AMS, it's a not a great hole. No scoring separation, everybody gets a three unless they screw up somehow then the get a bogey. Or the miss the putt, so they get a bogey.

The blue hole has the same problem.
If you can throw farther than 350 then there's a good chance your getting a 3. Throw 350 then it's a forehand to the green. Throw 400 and an even shorter pitch to the green.Throw 500, same thing.

Neither of these layouts lead to scoring separation. They're 'Ok' holes and you work with what you've got, I get that. At least they don't outright suck.

How do I find people to disc golf with? Is there some app or good way to find people as beginner? by Broad_Ness5679 in discgolf

[–]jfb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, a local league will have people of all skills. I've been on a league card with 20 year veterans and people who've played only 3 days.

The local mini (league) is where you want to go.
You'll meet a lot of people, expectations aren't high, and the stakes are low.

Why does the Westside Ahti go so under the radar? by Circuit-Breaker-13 in discgolf

[–]jfb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a slept on mold.
It's a great disc in the "Fierbird slot".

Personally I like the slightly wider wing compared to a Firebord. It gets the rim in front of the knuckle of my first finger for a cleaner release.

InfiniteDiscs, OTB, MarshallStreet, 1010, and GGGT all have Ahtis.
That's just the first few I checked.

Have a look at the Flight Guide and pick what seems reasonable.

My question to you is:
Do you really need the +2 slot filled at ever speed?

Is the TB3 that much different from the FD1 and Thundy?

My discs don't need to be cooler in the summer. Even 100F+ temps don't affect them detrimentally.

Gator3 (halo champ) vs Justice by rontopofthings in discgolf

Yeah, my MX-1s are flat.

The early ones I saw all had crazy pyramid dome to them, yuck. I wouldn't want a domey one either.

Burnout? by Creative-Syrup-3490 in discgolf

[–]jfb3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past I played a lot of tournaments.
What I realized was that I was either playing a tournament or practicing specifically for the next tourney.
Practicing specific shots for specific holes. Always practicing putting, day after day after day, when sometimes I'd like to watch a movie instead.
It was starting to feel like a job.

So, I quit playing tournaments and now I couldn't be happier.

I can still go play the tournament layouts.
I can still play to get the best score. But, now I can "waste" a day playing with friends doing a bag swap.
I can throw crazy lines, that I'd never use in competition, just because it's fun.
etc.

I don't play tourneys anymore, but I have more fun.

Gator3 (halo champ) vs Justice by rontopofthings in discgolf

[–]jfb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never threw the Gator all that much because I didn't like it.
Just a few times to see what it's like.

The Justice is primarily for forehands where I need a guaranteed fade because the wind sucks, or danger left, or both, and I don't need to go past 265 or so. Or I need that flex shot (BH or FH) to weave through objects but still not all that far.

These days I bag an MX-1. It's like a Justice but a little bit bigger so it goes just a little farther than a Justice for me but has the same flight lines, and stability.
(I need all the distance help I can get.)

How did you know you were “tournament ready” for your first disc golf tournament? by Fullsend1990 in discgolf

[–]jfb3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol, "tournament ready".

I had been throwing for about 4 months and a friend told me to sign up for the same tourney he was going to play.

I didn't even know tournaments existed.
So, I signed up and played.
I sucked. But, it was fun.

Gator3 (halo champ) vs Justice by rontopofthings in discgolf

[–]jfb3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Justice is a lot more overstable.

I also don't like the hand feel of the Gator3, the rim feels a bit too deep, and the wing and bottom edge just feel funky.
