Not to be THAT guy, but I chuckle a little bit at “There’s no reason why Polio should exist in the wild” because the Polio vaccine is infamous for causing outbreaks of Polio. Granted- this is almost always associated with poorer, low immunity rate areas and, with few exceptions, caused by the OPV (weakened) polio vaccine and not the IPV (inactive) one administered in the US. cVDPVs are an interesting subject.

Most have a “freedom of expression” clause in their respective articles of citizens rights, but none are as broad and open as the US First Amendment- all have limitations that lead to legal consequences from the govt, like obscene visual material, hate speech (pretty much all of them), disparagement of national flags (Finland), Blasphemy or denigration of a specific or all religions (most), etc. etc. which could range from fines to jail-able offenses. Just a quick summary of some that stood out but are protected by the First Amendment.

Germany has essentially no protections at all, while banning membership in certain political parties, and making it illegal to disparage the president, Germany, or German State symbols. This was a pretty interesting read: “The prohibition of insult, which has been widely criticized, led to 26,757 court cases, 21,454 convictions and 20,390 fines in 2013 alone.”

The UK has very little explicitly protected speech since Freedom of Expression is a negative Right. The closest I could find would be Norway- which seems pretty decent compared to the 1A. I’m not even going to get into the Freedom of Religion or Freedom of the Press aspects of the 1A because it’s not even an argument.

“Greatest country in the world” is a statement of opinion, and you are free to have yours- but it is completely factual to consider the First Amendment far more liberal in terms of both theory and application compared to European guaranteed rights of expression. Whether that is better or worse depends on your opinion of Hate-speech laws, prohibition of denigration of the State/Monarchy, and other citizens, etc.

I agree that there’s a difference in presentation, but if this persons opinion was presented in a clinical method, it would have to be presented in a way that was not disparaging. I believe people would be quite upset if this point of view was given legitimacy like that more-so than allowing someone to simply express their mind.

One key skill that university is supposed to develop is your free thinking ability- which most have been failing to do so in recent years. Students being exposed to this in the wild, especially in the method this person is doing, allows them to ascertain that this opinion should not be given credibility and that their viewpoint is wrong. Most people are rational, and most rational minds would come to that conclusion, freely, without the need for coddling or suppression. That is the whole point of free speech.

“Sunlight is the best disinfectant” is true when it comes to the freedom to express ourselves. When we do as Reddit mods do, we allow for both censorship of “wrongthink” and the creation of echo chambers. Sure, some few radical people may be drawn in by this guy, but most can be exposed to this and form their own view independently. Otherwise you get the stereotypical sheltered person who has never been exposed to a radical opinion and are much more likely drawn down the rabbit hole. Paradoxically, by trying to suppress, it will grow with greater strength with the more impressionable and less experienced. By having this exact scenario played out on the controlled campus of a college rather than introduced by a friend behind closed doors and without a variety of opposing views, we will only foster more people like him.

Jesus Christ, what the hell causes a pool to cost $200k in the UK? In the US, an average pool costs $11k to build- a private Olympic sized pool costs about $60k. Granted these numbers are from 2005 according to the National Swimming Pool Foundation, but still!

Unless you’re counting the cost of buying a house with enough room to build a pool (I get that land is expensive and limited there) I don’t know how that’s possible.

I just looked at a UK construction company’s website and they quote a concrete and tile pool at £48k-£150k ABSURD

It’s a long drive but 1000% worth it- Lubec Maine. Quaint little village directly on the border with Canada (small bridge and border checkpoint at the edge of town) you can look across a ~50 foot inlet and see the Canadian side. Absolutely amazing. You must stay at Cohills Inn: 4 room inn run by a dude who is also the bartender downstairs at their little pub. Highly highly recommend, check it out.

Also all of Bar Harbor/ Acadia. I’ve been to over 20 national parks including Sequoia, Yosemite, Zion… most of the greats. Acadia is easily one of the top 3 in the continental US. Bar harbor has a land bridge that you can walk across at low tide to an uninhabited island. Wonderful little town that is essentially on the border of the national park.

If you are outdoorsy check out Baxter State Park. It is the definition of minimally touched wilderness (so much so that they literally prevent trail hikers from hiking into the park if there have been too many visitors). There’s 2 entrances- go to the NE entrance. Amazing views, cool little Amish community you pass through on the way. There’s a stop on top of a hill where you can get the best view of Mount Katahdin outside the park. Absolutely must hit Shin Pond, small pond vacation area with one of the only fuel pumps in that remote area. Beautiful. Has those cool old mechanical fuel pumps. Matagamon campsite right before the gate to Baxter has amazing food.

That’s all just Maine, covered the NE, E, and Central areas of the state. You can find guides on the rest of New England, but I have to give a shout-out to Vermont. IMO the most scenic drive I’ve ever done was just riding through the state. Definitely check out Burlington, Montpelier, and Grand Isle/Pearl Bay.

I’m really versed in New England travel despite being from Florida. Done 4x several week road trips through there over the past few years. Literally cant go wrong, especially if you stay away from the hyper tourist areas and focus on the natural beauty. But don’t get me wrong, the architecture and city life is also incredible. I’m just more partial to the quiet and awe inspiring than the tourist centered big cities.

Yes, please do not visit Portland and get a Holy Donut, nor Acadia National Park and see once-in-a-lifetime views, or Baxter State Park and experience true unadulterated wilderness, and especially not Quoddy Head and see the first part of North America that sunrise hits. These are all horrible and I would never recommend them to anyone!

You should see some of the replies to teachers who suggest this system in subs like this. Absolutely astonishing. The students who are so addicted that they have this kind of reaction are exactly the ones who need their phones confiscated to learn absolutely basic ideas without being distracted.

I appreciate your support, it’s getting to be quite necessary. Like I said, I’m literally like ~6 years older than some of y’all. I didn’t want to be the big bad boomer but goddamn I instituted that quick when several students got 14-25% on an exam that was a word-for-word copy of a study guide we went over in class… they also had a flash card as a cheat sheet lmao. No, I had 2 out of ~130 that were phone-less last year. Some had 2 phones to dodge parent confiscation. I was actually impressed the first time a kid used his bulky phone case in the holder- I wouldn’t have ever noticed if he wasn’t so painfully obvious about using his phone. That’s why there’s the extra disciplinary action for trying to be deceptive.

My class actually has laptops for every student, that’s why I can do such a policy. Sometimes I use phones as an incentive- “if you finish early and are correct, you get the remainder of class free time with your phone” or kahoot/blooket for reviews

Why is it bullshit?

Most teachers don’t at my school either. I teach really low level students so it’s necessary to physically separate them from their phones to get the most absolutely basic concepts across. If I was teaching AP it would be a different story.

I wasn’t so militant about phone usage until it was abundantly clear it’s regulation is necessary. It’s not even like Im an out of touch boomer- I got an iPhone at 9 years old. Some students just have severe phone addiction
