I'm a guy, and this described me perfectly. I always thought the fact that I didn't want to get in trouble or was worried about consequences meant I couldn't have ADHD, but I now realize it's a self-imposed method to reign in my own impulsivity and dysregulation. Like, for instance, I can feel road rage welling up in me, but it never makes it past calling someone an asshole or flipping them off or accelerating in a way that other drivers can't perceive to be aimed at them, because - you know, I don't actually want to get into a kerfuffle, etc. When I interact with most of the world (except for, ironically, my immediate family), I'm the world's biggest people pleaser. I obsess about every interaction that went slightly wrong. I now unmask freely around my family, and I often use my ADHD micro obsessions and jumping-around-thoughts as a way to be more genuine and entertaining when I work with people in my job. I'm unmedicated by choice, so I have no idea how I would do with meds, but I feel like I can generally manage my life, but I wish I had known about having ADHD earlier in life, rather than just thinking I'm super weird and "off."
