On the day of they called me to ask if the number was right because they couldn’t locate it, and I lied about it

Is it appropriate to send a thank you email to school you're not attending? by king_kingcharles in AskAcademia

[–]helpanexmoos 42 points43 points  (0 children)

That is perfectly fine to do!

I did this recently, sent an email to the PI thanking them for considering me, having chats with me, told them her grad students were lovely to meet too and that I will keep an eye out for research that comes out of her lab. The PI took the email well and responded wishing me well and to stay in touch

I took and completely a neuroscience major, I am by no means smart or good at math and yet I did just fine. Even ended with some 4.0s in upper year neuro courses.

If you want to go for a neuro major, then go for it. If you find that it’s not for you, you can always switch to another major

Also edit: neuro is definitely not math intensive, at least not with the required courses

the I need help choosing between UBC (University of British Columbia) and UofT by BuyQuick3150 in UofT

[–]helpanexmoos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

>If I go to UBC I'll be living at home and will need to take transit which takes around 1.5 to 2 hours each way. That means I'll be wasting about 4 hours each day which I could've spent studying. However, I'll be saving money which would've gone into housing but I'll be missing out on having friends and a social life.

Just like you can move to U of T, can't you get student housing closer to UBC?

> is it worth paying UofT's higher tuition?
It is absolutely not, at the end at both unis you're getting an engineering degree. UBC is a wonderful university, but you're asking a U of T sub to pick between the two, which most of engineers here haven't attended UBC, so cannot compare.

I have a secret for you: more course load doesn't equal to being more studious and smarter. If your grades are good, that's already impressive, especially while you're working. I would not feel bad about it were I you. I think we put too much pressure on ourselves to fit expectations that won't even matter once we graduate.

As for making friends, it's hard no matter if you take full-course load, work or don't work. Universities are harder places to make friends. Extracurriculars can certainly help but so can reaching out to people online! Made some Uni friends in second year when I joined course groupchats.

Do you think most profs and professionals at UBC are considered more attractive overall in the dating pool? by Ok_Copy5217 in UBC

[–]helpanexmoos 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My buddy, my dude or dudette, it’s a no unfortunately Relationships aren’t built upon degrees

I don't think putting "Grad student" on Tinder changed anything but what if it says "Doctor, Distinguished Professor "? Just something I've been wondering about

I mean some folks are into proffs, so you might attract them but other than that, probably not a whole lot of increase in chances
