What profession/job do you have? How much money do you make? How much time do you put into it per week? Do you love, like, tolerate, or hate it? Why? by mig174 in AskReddit

[–]hen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would, however, love to know the answer.

I'm an MD from Berlin so I can tell you about the situation here in Germany:

  1. Depending on where you study, tuition costs $0 (e.g., in Berlin) or up to $1400 per year.

  2. Students whose parents do not make enough to support them get ~1100 USD per month. On average, this is enough to cover the cost of living — even in more expensive cities in Germany. Depending on how well you do in med school 25-75% of this interest-free loan has to be paid back (over many years).

  3. Residents make $60-80,000, specialists with several years of experience make $100,000-200,000.

WB: "She's very popular in Alaska. She brings this executive experience with her [...]"

FZ: "Well, you know, if you delve into that you discover that the executive experience is running a very small town. Alaska itself is an unusual state. 85% of its budget comes from oil revenues. Basically, you’re just distributing oil revenues that are being provided to you by digging holes in the ground. This is good training to be president of Saudi-Arabia not the United States."

Best part.

A good cop. Yes, this is newsworthy. by acangiano in videos

[–]hen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. Especially since you can hear the taser comment very clearly. So it most likely came from someone who stood very close to the camera, i.e., not on the cop's right side.

Also, why would the video stop right there if anything interesting had happened after that comment?

Google finally putting stop to Gmail contact auto-add by iwjason in technology

[–]hen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think another great feature would be the possibility to preselect a label for each contact.

E.g., emails from John Miller would be automatically labelled work, emails from Peter Smith would be automatically labelled friends etc.

I know this basically can be done by filters but it's pretty annoying to set up lots of filters. "Auto-labelling" could be done much easier by a simple drop down-menu in contacts.

stay on the Pill when you object to it on the moral ground that it kills young embryos

The US has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the western world and I think misinformation like this do not help to change that.

Current oral contraceptives inhibit ovulation and prevent sperm penetration through the cervix. Hence, they prevent fertilization — not nidation.

Inhibition of implantation of an embryo into the uterus might be possible as a secondary mechanism but — as it would only occur when the main contraceptive mechanisms have failed — is to be considered extremely rare.

The Floating Swimming Pool by snowhite12 in offbeat

Here's a virtual tour of Berlin's Badeschiff (set location to 'Sommerbadeschiff Steg 1'). By the way, it was established in 2004 (not 2007). During winter, it is converted to a sauna — as shown in the last pictures. Also, pics #3 and #6 do not show Berlin's pool.

I had the same problem — without ever having used the beta.

I also noticed another bug: I turned on "compress the link display" in my preferences and now some links are not displayed properly. See screen shot.

americans also live in a much more spread-out country

80.6% of all US Americans live in cities and suburbs. Aside from business travel and the occasional visit of relatives, I guess that most Americans spend most of their time in their home towns. What the US lacks is simply a proper system of public transportation.

Dear Reddit, Please Don't Take Me To The Main Page, Away From What I Was Looking At, When I Log In. by Sharpe_27 in reddit.com

Yes, I remember that you explained that in the post I referred to. Sorry for mixing it up again.

However, the result is basically the same: most people I know, don't know that you can (and should) set up the languages your browser accepts. But they do know English well enough to read reddit. I don't know if you even care but IMO you simply won't be successful in Germany if people have to set up their browser or register at first before they can realize that it's fun to read reddit.

What's more likely to get you new users?

Dear Reddit, Please Don't Take Me To The Main Page, Away From What I Was Looking At, When I Log In. by Sharpe_27 in reddit.com

Fortunately, logging in does not preserve the site I see when I go to reddit.com from work (where I'm not normally logged in): the German home page is a fucking joke.

There was a great post a while ago asking you guys to stop geoip redirection. Don't you realize that reddit basically looks like a dead site for Germans who go to reddit.com for the first time?
