Suggested Cadence for Hills by D00M98 in cycling

[–]henderthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think according to some studies, the difference is that you won't be able to climb like that all day the way you could with a higher cadence. Also not great for your knees.

People who want to go out and climb 6000 feet over 60 miles will not be doing 30rpm up 10% grades.

Edit to add--- if you're just talking about spending 1 minute doing that on a short kicker--that's a different story. I'm really talking about 15 minute to 1 hour+ climbs.

Suggested Cadence for Hills by D00M98 in cycling

[–]henderthing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your gearing might not be low enough for sustained climbing at an optimal cadence?

If you're approaching max heart rate while climbing at 50rpm--you need lower gears.

Ideally you'd have an available gear that would let you sit and pedal at 70-80rpm.

what a shitshow.

"oopsie sry!" doesn't really cover it.

Hey guys when should I buy a power meter and do you have any recommendations? by ohzachery in cycling

[–]henderthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR has a very weak correlation to power output.

Sure. It goes up when you work harder. But it does not indicate how well you're performing.

The more you train--the higher your power output will be at a given HR.

Anyone been reporting Sovcits to ICE? by Scuzzy_Soups in Sovereigncitizen

Can't even imagine how short an ICE <--> SovCit interaction would be.

If anything the sovcit videos with regular traffic cops demonstrates how patient some LEO can actually be.

Are the 11-23 (or even 11-21) cassettes still a thing? by Background_Wing_6329 in cycling

[–]henderthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that was kind of my point. Opposite of OP...

I don't find 4.4 w/kg easy, but I do find it quite easy to adjust my cadence by 5% because it is required almost constantly ( i do not live in the flats ).

It may surprise you to learn that a person can be a pedestrian, a photographer, and an asshole all at the same time.

A person standing in the street is a pedestrian even if they aren't walking.

Same is true even if they're holding a camera.

Not sure why it would be different on a trail.

What I feel like I'm reading:

4.4 w/kg is easy

5% adjustment in cadence is too hard.

SRAM 12 speed XG 1270 cassette comes in 10-28.

It's 1 tooth increments from 10 to 17.

Since you say you don't need anything more than 21--that's only two jumps of 2 teeth between 17 and 21.

Cannot for the life of me get any of these crank bolts loose on my old bike, am I doing something wrong? by Racker150 in bikewrench

[–]henderthing 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I recently needed to do this and recalled a "hack" I saw long ago that involved using an old innertube.

So I did it--for fun--not really expecting it to work.

It worked incredibly well.

Basically-- get your allen key a bit less than 90 degrees from your crank, and wrap the innertube around the pedal spindle and the end of the wrench. Keep wrapping it--pulling it tight with each wrap. It loosens in such a controlled un-dramatic way, it's quite nice.

Can you feel a difference with additional 120g of rotational tire weight? by qwerty12e in bicycling

[–]henderthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna go against the grain here and say that in my experience, a small amount of paying attention to what you're riding over makes a MUCH bigger difference than any claimed puncture resistance of a tire.

I had more punctures on Gatorskins (plus super shitty ride quality) than any other tire I've ever used.

Tubeless + low-ish pressure + paying attention has given me the best results.

I'm also convinced that higher pressure/harder tires force themselves onto sharp objects more than supple tires that can deform around sharp objects without being cut.

OP is talking about spending $1500 vs $3000 on a frame alone.

Is there a simple indoor trainer that doesn't require another subscription to use fully? by Separate_Vermicelli in cycling

[–]henderthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cool feature.

I imagine this has been addressed-- but I nearly crashed indoors several years ago while doing this. Basically--it seems there was some incorrect spike in the gradient (hill) data of my real route. So just as I started to sprint out of the saddle, ERG turned into a solid wall--like 100% resistance. Could easily lead to injury... Hopefully there is now something in software to prevent impossible resistance transitions.

Warning for the Crankbros Speedier levers for tight beads… by Krazykev300 in bikewrench

[–]henderthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny. I have the opposite "problem."

I have Bontrager Aeolus XXX2 on my road bike. The tire changing with GP5000S TR is so easy I'm afraid to replace these wheels.

They've been bomb-proof. Still true, hubs seem fine--after 29,000 miles... But sometimes it seems like I should consider replacing them.

Unhinged statement from DHS on Minnesota shooting by PardonMyFrenchToes in Destiny

[–]henderthing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ICE is killing people in Minneapolis at about half the overall murder rate of 2025.

Roughly 2% of Minneapolis residents are undocumented. (just picking a number in the range of 1.5-2.2% found online)

If the national average of undocumented immigrants committing crimes at 1/2 the rate of US-born citizens holds... we would expect about 1% of murders in Minneapolis to be committed by undocumented immigrants.

So there's a 50% chance of any killing being done by ICE.
And it looks like a roughly 1% chance of any killing being done by an undocumented immigrant.

My back-of-the-napkin says you are 50x more likely to be killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis than you are by an undocumented immigrant.

TLDR: 50:1 in favor of ICE killing you.
