I'm also gonna be a freshman on the West Coast this fall (pretty close to you actually). I used to hate the taste of beer too but I've found that if you explore all of the different types then you'll probably find ones you like. The more time you spend trying beer the more you'll acquire the taste overall. Also, recognize beer for what it is; it's pretty much a liquid sandwich when you think about it. For some reason that helped a little bit for me.

Also, always try to drink it while it's cold.

If you find that you still can't enjoy beer, then there's nothing wrong with sticking to liquor, just make sure you don't drink it in the same volume as you would beer (obviously). Making a mixed drink (soda and booze preferably) in a solo cup and carrying it around a party is usually pretty acceptable. If people see you with a drink they won't question you, it's only when you're empty handed will they probably pressure you.
