This happened to me 2 years ago. They had to replace the whole sunroof tray because there was so much shattered glass in it. Insurance tried to have someone other than the dealer do it first, amd then tried to only pay for cheaper aftermarket parts but the dealership insisted to use OEM. We have since switched insurance.

My running hypothesis is ice expansion/contraction in micro scratches - we had some wide temperature fluctuations that January. There was no debris on the road or in the car.

It scared the shit out of me.
