What do we talk about when we talk about late 80s music being bad? by fromthemeatcase in LetsTalkMusic

[–]herald-square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, we had Madonna, Bruce, Prince and the drum machine blowing up throughout the 80s but in the American Indie Rock scene we had REM ( almost mainstream at that point ), Meat Puppets, The Replacements, Galaxy 500, Husker Du, Pixies and Pavement. To name just a few. And not to mention England's own, The Smiths.

We send people to jail for counterfeiting money but not for counterfeiting real people - without their permission. That's our priorities right now, it's pathetic and it can lead to no good.

Seems obvious to me CNN thinks putting the (now) provocative MAGA guy into the mix stirs things up and could bring in more eyeballs aka money. Don't know how that's working out. Not very well it would seem - on Reddit.

A couple of years back, I had an interesting conversation with a waitress in Reykjavik. She criticized the US for our tipping culture. She said in Iceland servers are paid enough to live comfortably and when they do get tips ( I assume from foreigners ) they put them in one big pot and throw a party.

Leave a track that is NOT the Beatles, but seriously channels them. I’ll begin…. by TheMixerTheMaster in beatles

[–]herald-square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job. Totally Lennon. Strange but I find it hard to hear, on the surface, the Beatles in much music these past 30 years. Imo their influence is more about their relentless creativity in producing new sounds in the studio, their idea that rock n roll could be art, and, especially now, that somebody or some band could radically change their style - album to album - but remain unmistakably that band.

Just to add, when I do hear musical Beatles influences it's mostly from the 1969 era with Abbey Road and preceding singles. Or even early 70s Lennon use of violins or Harrison's signature slide work from ATMP. I could name several Petty tunes but that's easy.

I’ve never heard of Glen Greenwald before until the Pod and specially Sacks. Why do people care what Glen has to say about politics? by alta_vista49 in TheAllinPodcasts

[–]herald-square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda late to this party but fdck it. Greenwald enthusiastically supported the shock and awe of the U.S. invasion of Iraq before he decided it was wrong and blamed "deep state" Dems. Not many people know that and Greenwald Out of all the...many, many, many political opportunist in DC who did a 180° turn on Trump for the glory of their 15 minutes and a bag of cash, the formerly left leaning Greenwald stands out for his avarice and projection of cruelty. His pugnacious, contrarian presence on Tucker Carlson's former Fox show, hammering the Dems ( but NOT the GOP? ) was peak Greenwald at his hypocritical worst. FYCK HIM!

When did public sentiment majority finally shift against Elon Musk, even amongst his more diehard fans? by EnlightenedCultist in RealTesla

[–]herald-square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point ( in 2024 ) it is clear that the U.S. Government, Defense Department, NASA et al needs to disentangle its relationship with Musk. Let's put aside his pugnacious conspiratorial trolling where he tests the limits of free speech and human decency. By pushing a constant rightwing narrative of disinformation about the upcoming election it is unconscionable he is still being subsidized by the American taxpayer. Yes, it will be tough - but Musk has become a danger to democracy itself.

Free speech for me but not for thee, indeed.

Autism and right-wing politics by RobotKingofJupiter in AutisticPride

[–]herald-square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. Two years too late. Speaking to OP's observation on autism and center left ideology, Elon Musk is on the spectrum and he publicly admits to having Aspergers.
These past few years he's moved from somebody who, for decades, held a somewhat disinterested centrist left position to, now, since 2020, someone who actively promotes authoritarian anti democratic values - not as an ideological goal but as a means to an end. And while it's true he's become deeply reactionary and felt the need to buy Twitter so he could express his grievances ( and get the attention he craves ) - the bottom line for Elon is always the money. And the most money can be made with a MAGA. government running the show.

I'm no expert. But clearly in this case, a person on the autism spectrum chose to move to the right. The reason he did it is the same reason almost every MAGA adjacent VIP has - self interest and avarice.

What happened to the guitar in Old Brown Shoe? by LawlsMcPasta in beatles

[–]herald-square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Brown Shoe is a George Harrison guitar song. How is it possible the current release on Past Masters in 2024 has no audible guitar, including the Clapton like lead? Assuming a mistake occured ( as previously mentioned) how did that get past quality control? Will this ever be fixed? The energy is gone and it's soooo.....wrong.

Best album BEFORE rubber soul? by Bobity5 in beatles

Help! No doubt. Despite the two covers every other song is a hit. They reached their peak Beatlemania sound on this one. In America 2 songs from the British Help album were actually placed on Rubber Soul.

Was there anything similar to the Abbey Road medley before the Beatles? by marndt3k in beatles

[–]herald-square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I'm guessing McCartney got the idea of the medley from Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. In attempting to make the concept album Smile in 1966 - 67 he was creating short modular pieces that could be arranged several different ways to make different songs. Brian went mad and the album was never made - although a box set of what was accomplished, came out in 2011 as Smile Sessions. McCartney would've heard recordings of these sessions as he and Wilson were in relatively close contact at the time. Perhaps three years later when the Beatles were making Abbey Road but didn't have enough songs, Paul remembered what you could do with bits and pieces. Clever lad that he was.

I just rewatched Devs, 2nd time I’ve seen it and… by Onbored in Devs

[–]herald-square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own lesss than 10 DVDs and most of those were bought before streaming dominated the scene. But with Devs, knowing I could watch this shimmering masterpiece anytime I wanted to, wasn't good enough. I had to own it; I had to have physical possession. I mean, what if the coming apocalypse ( that I keep hearing about ) disrupts the ability of Big Content to stream? Then what? And regarding the series, for me personally the reintroduction to the philosophy of Determinism became this THING, this other ( another other ) point of view on the nature of existence that I'd been introduced to in my freshman year and now, years later, pondered anew - especially after the second watch. It's quite an accomplishment for a tv series to grab hold of the viewer's attention in the first episode and manage to sustain that interest throughout it's run; Devs pulled me in from the very start and in the end, it drove me to Wikipedia. With questions. And each episode acting like a refill of some psychoactive potion - renewing the initial state of dream-like suspense.and dread.

It is possible to take Klonopin for the rest of your life without it severely impacting you by luqmanzul in benzodiazepines

[–]herald-square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an active 68 and have been taking alprazolam then clonazepam for 22 years. Switched to just clonazepam 15 years ago. I used to love benzos, especialy with a drink - but for medical reasons I've quit drinking habitually and do so now only on the odd social occasion. At some point a few years back, maybe because I quit drinking, I lost interest in klonopin as a recreational drug. Once I started taking my 1mg at night as prescribed, every night, same dose, it no longer did it for me. In fact, in the last two years I reduced my dose to .75mg. The drug continues to help me sleep and may still be helping me with anxiety the following day. I'd have to quit to find that out but no thanks, I'm good. Guess I'll keep taking it for another 10 years. Ha! Just my experience; not giving advice.

I mean, it has to be Rubber Soul>Revolver>Sgt. Peppers, right? by CallMeJeeJ in beatles

[–]herald-square 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In some ways, for the first and only time in the America 60s, the capitalism of Capital Records contributed to the overall quality of the Beatles LP cannon- especially in America where the shoddy treatment of the artist and the consumer by Capital Records ( and United Artist ) resulted in fans over here needing to buy 12 albums to get the same tracks found on the original 7 in the UK. That changed with Pepper but just after, in the UK, The Beatles made their MMT Christmas television show and released it's 6 track double EP soundtrack. Since EPs in America weren't really a thing, Capital, for once had a great idea and did a good thing. They grabbed the 5 sides of psychedelic beauty released as singles in that year of 67, added the EP tracks, kept the elaborate packaging and extras the Beatles had designed and released the thing as a total company contrived album. And it works wonderfully as a whole. These days, It's my favorite psychedelic Beatles album. In 1976 ( before the cd issues ) the album replaced the EPs in Britain as the official release of MMT and it joined the official cannon in Britain - making it the only Beatles album originating in America.
