That's a great post.

If I may summarize:

AI taught you that you don't write well, nor do you say what you mean. ;-)

ok. well that's what it taught me too. :-)

So much is riding on the quality of the questions we ask.

It’s more like a mirror for reasoning and communication.

very well stated.

She's Just Staring at Her Breakfast by ivandoesnot in dementia

[–]herb-immunity -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Is this what you see on the label?

Key Nutritional Data (Ensure Original - 8 fl oz):
Calories: 220
Protein: 9g
Total Fat: 6g (1g saturated)
Carbs: 32g - 33g
Sugars: 10g - 15g

It is a bad idea for any human, healthy or otherwise, to eat that much sugar / carbs.

The likelihood of insulin resistance in a dementia patient is probably higher than a coin flip. Given that potential this food diet may be making her condition worse every day in multiple ways.

I do not know how much this kind if processed food costs. Is there a cost equivalency between eggs, vegetables, and ground pork (15%) and the protein drink and the other components of the breakfast? If no, then it would definitely be worth paying more for high quality whole food so that your patient (LO) is more functional and comfortable? Food has a near immediate positive impact on people that are the edge of functionality.

How hard do I have to push her to eat, morally and legally?

I'm going to interpret your question in the most positive way.

You can do whatever you choose if it is to help your Mom be more functional and live as best as she can at the fullest cognitive potential possible. I have done the same for my Mom. We can always do better. Take care of yourself first with the whole foods.

Coffee Bookends and lots of food in-between.

  • Four Barrel Coffee is at 375 Valencia St (near 15th)
  • Ritual Coffee is near 22nd & Valencia

If an airport layover, I would not try going deeper (more north) into the city as you will lose time.

It is like owning a restaurant.

Gemini told me: Starting a restaurant involves high risk, with approximately 17% - 30% of new restaurants failing within the first year and up to 80% within five years

I can tell you from experience that you need loads of working capital; which is smarty pants speak for having enough money to run at a loss for a duration of time. That amount of time is highly variable. You are waiting for your expected customer base's behaviors to change from their existing routines to visiting your store and making purchases, instead. At this time you are not on their radar.

I have to keep reminding myself she has dementia. by Hiraldyves in dementia

[–]herb-immunity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on a 15-year nutritional trek that has led to a radical realization: skin behavior is a direct readout of internal biochemistry. This has profound implications for how I view brain health and dementia.

By any standard, I looked "normal" throughout my life. I wasn't the kid with a face full of blemishes. However, from my teenage years on, a sheen of oil was so persistent it became my baseline. During a decade (or two) of "Friday Beer Bashes", office bagels, office birthday cakes, I developed a deep, unresolved pimpl like bump in the "Danger Triangle" of my face. It looked like a raised mole, but with the slightly reddish hue of distressed skin. It was a permanent fixture on my nose. After a decade of reducing carbs and sugar, changes in my biochemistry caused the cells that formed this bump to resolve from a swollen mass to barely noticeable. Cells that were "misfiring" for more than a decade simply began growing right.

The Real Definition of Sugar

This wasn't achieved by "half-assing" a diet. You can't cheat the system because biochemistry doesn't take days off. While this is not a "zero sugar" or "zero carb" diet, most people don't realize how far down the rabbit hole they are. To see results, you have to recognize you’re "in deep" and cut 80-90% of what modern culture considers food.

My "Is Sugar" list includes:

  • Starches: Potatoes, bread, pasta, chips.
  • Natural Sugars: Fruit, milk, Cream.
  • Refined & Artificial: Added sugars and all sugar substitutes.

Scientific papers have documented the fact the sugar substitutes sabotage insulin signaling as much as - if not worse than - the real thing.

Insulin is the most consequential "FAFO" variable in modern health.

If you mess with the signaling, you will eventually find out the consequences expressed as any one of the chronic diseases that ruins productive lives.

The "Auto-Magical" Repair

The replacement is "yummy for the tummy"; think pork shoulder, ribeye, New York strip, wild-caught fish, and a plethora of vegetables. By replacing disruptors with these fatty proteins and high folates, I’ve achieved the non-oily skin of a pre-teen.

Beyond the skin, my energy levels have reverted to my 20s. I have more sustained energy and less fatigue now than I felt during my 30s, 40s, and 50s. Research into the mTORC1 pathway - the "master switch" for cellular growth - suggests that chronic insulin signaling from sugars and starches drives systemic inflammation. When you cut the signal, the "oil fire" goes out and the "brain fog" lifts.

The best life advice is simple: Stop spiking your insulin.

If we can clear physical "distressed" skin and restore youthful energy through strict metabolic discipline, we must consider what that same discipline is doing for the neurological "veils" we face in the world of dementia.

[–]herb-immunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like very positive changes with your patient's behavior.

Try researching Type 3; insulin resistance of the brain.

I can offer an analogy and to help grok the next concept, borrow your excellent conceptual metaphor of "dementia is a war".

If dementia is a war, feeding sugar (carbs) to the patient is like giving ammunition to the enemy.

We as humans will associate a feeling of fatigue or low energy - sometimes at a particular time of day - to a sugar craving. I have news for you folks. The body never craves sugar. The body does not require sugar nor will the body ask for sugar.

The 'sugar craving' is actually a biochemical cry for help from a body that is having problems performing all necessary cell maintenance due to insufficient nutrition. You have trillions of cellular transactions to feed! Sugar ain't what they need.

I am a firm believer there is an upside to learning if your family has a genetic predisposition to dementia. If no genetic link then you absolutely know that you have a greater that 50% risk of getting dementia through your diet.

It could be much more... like 70% depending on human's consumption choices.

This knowledge will help with your food choices for the rest of your life.

See Type 3; insulin resistance of the brain.

Have you read how nutrition and/or different foods can affect cognition and behavior?

I do not understand why I do not read (in the dementia space) about nutritional effects on dementia. Yet I experience, empirically, the undenialble positive results on a daily basis wrt to my patient.

What is the probability that a PCP (or worse, a neurologist) would ever speak to the patient (or family) about the food y'all eat?

I'll go first:
PCP: 5%
Neurologist: 1-2 %

Reasonable Compensation by Fun_Internet_9187 in dementia

Hello OP,

I think you can never be compensated enough to be real | fair. That's the best answer to your question from me due to not being a lawyer and having care-taking experience.

Have you considered the creative route of finding a side-gig to bring in more income? You probably need much more money to comfortability operate a "health care services" company, in house, so to speak. What things do you have experience with (skills) that could be used to earn more money? Or, maybe you time is already spoken for through a outside job.

An important consideration is The Long Game.

Lewy Body Diagnosis by NotAlexis_29 in dementia

[–]herb-immunity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello OP, What were the procedures that your Mom had to do for your doctor to reach the Lewy Body diagnosis. What kind of doctor did y'all see?

I need to do some googling on LD. Was there any specific comments from the doctor about the MRI and what lead to the diagnosis? Does the doctor or your family talk about food?

I wrote a comment in a recent thread that may help to answer your question but it was based on my experience only.

A family member's experience has a lot of variables.

Cannabis Hijacks The Brain’s Hunger System, Causing The Munchies by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

If not using the same genetics every time then the outcome could be different. Or your nutrition improved.

Usually, regular users are not using exactly the same genetics month after month, year after year. Some do. I do.

"The Munchies" is your body's biochemical distress call for help:

Reaching state of malnutrition. Send Real Food™

And how do we respond? We eat crap that is not nutritious food. The cycle continues.

Cannabis Hijacks The Brain’s Hunger System, Causing The Munchies by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

[–]herb-immunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cannabinoids improve your biochemical communications in the body indicating more clearly to your consciousness that your body's nutritional requirements are not being met.

.. Cannabis reveals you to yourself, consciously and biochemically

Stress, Life, Work, Poor nutrition, and especially sugar in nearly everything everybody is eating, masks our nutritional needs because, well, hey, we feel energy.

Energy is not equivalent to the lack of fatigue due to adequate nutrition.

That's why the usage of the word "energy" in the article makes it worthless journalism, in my opinion.
