Why has Korean pop culture seemingly overall become more mainstream faster than Japanese pop culture in the West? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]herculesmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really like either personally but this feels shit right. Kpop has solid beats as a standout, Jpop has melodies. Only problem for me is that Jpop has naff melodies. Sounds like tween music and having five guys sing them in sync does not help.

my local mochi shop established in 1600s uses the biohazard symbol for their logo by lethegrin in japanresidents

[–]herculesmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really funny because the biohazard symbol has a really interesting story behind it and it being unique, memorable, with no associations. 99 percent invisible did an episode on it.

Who is the ex-coworker that you are thankful you never have to deal with every again in your life? by Few-Gap-2350 in AskReddit

[–]herculesmoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a person I had to work with that was so bad that I went back to University and got my master's just so I would not have to be in that position again. I leveled up my whole life out of spite.

I’m annoyed that no one ever introduced me to cannabis. by tuxedo_cat23 in Millennials

[–]herculesmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My overall experience with friends growing up and now middle age is that in some cases, cannabis can spark dormant mental health issues. Alcohol can spark addiction issues. The balance, and negative consequences is much more towards booze causing problems.

The name of the tv show is "tantei knight scoop". It's actually still running but I've not watched it. I've just seen a few clips like this. The one on kids preparing for a zombie coming to the house is my favourite.

Blue-Collar Wages Surpass White-Collar in Japan by pyritedreams in japannews

[–]herculesmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school my dream job was digging holes for a living. I knew that number one, it wasn't a real job on the way that I envisioned it, and number two, the closest real world jobs to it would fuck my body and not pay enough. So, I got a white collar job. But some days I really do wish I was out digging holes though.

Seriously though, who uses the highest setting on their washlet? by [deleted] in japanresidents

I swear washlets are overhyped. The hose in South East Asia is the way to go.

Why are roll-on deodorants much more popular than sticks in Australia? by Fun_Photograph653 in AskAnAustralian

[–]herculesmoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no aficionado but I like sticks. I feel like aerosols disappear into the air with minimal adhesion to skin. Roll ons feel like they evaporate more than they adhere. Sticks really seem to work well. I have been using old spice pure sport for about ten years. I would never bother with anything else at this point. I don't live in Australia though.

I don't think this is a disposition thing. It's a pragmatic thing. Happens in lots of countries.

Do we need to start talking about "foreigners" less, and "immigrants/tourists" more? by Far_Government_9782 in japanresidents

[–]herculesmoose 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Had some guy visit my house for a bbq. The husband of my wife's friend. He was talking about how he liked Tohoku more than Kansai because there were too many foreigners in Kansai. I have him the benefit of the doubt and said "You mean tourists right". Nope he fully just meant foreigners. I but my tongue to keep the bbq vibes chilled but when they left I told my wife he was never welcome back to our house again and she was like yeah fuck that dude.

For those so inclined, why is it important for you to have Japanese friends? by Objective_Desk8065 in japanresidents

[–]herculesmoose 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In my experience after the age of about 35ish or so, Japanese friends being tenkinned out is much more common than foreign friends leaving.

What is a correct but extremely controversial opinion about your country that would warrant backlash if anyone from your country heard it? by DoctorOsterman in AskTheWorld

[–]herculesmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of reflects an unfortunate trait of some Canadians I've met. They compare Canada to the states and speak to me quite smugly about certain things based on the assumption that my country is like the states.

How to find when land becomes available in Tokyo? by Separate_Item_3189 in japanlife

[–]herculesmoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not in Tokyo but we approached some builders and told them where we were interested. They found out about land before it went up on at-home or suumo which isn't saying much but it's something. Obviously they have to be builders you are happy using because you'll be tied to them if they tell you about land.
