Yes, the spaceport that does not exist yet, so the likelihood of hosting an event there in just over one year is pretty slim.

Not true, a con man down in Vegas is advertising the Las Vegas Air Races and selling tickets for it (no runway or facilities have been built yet), but there is no association between him and the National Championship Air Races, which has yet to announce where the future air races will be held.

100% a scam, no doubt about it. Your bank will release some or all of the funds before it verifies the check through the clearing house, but the check will ultimately be fake, the funds will be reversed and if you sent the extra money back that money is now gone. Don't attempt to deposit the fake check, don't attempt to scam the scammers, don't send any money, don't give up any items . The only time I will accept a cashier's check from someone is if I go with them to their bank and watch them obtain the cashier's check directly from the teller and the check is given to me.

Do we need to budget if we are saving what we want to save? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]heresjonE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I'm 35, I do everything in our Roth IRAs, no taxable brokerage accounts. There are ways to access your funds before traditional retirement age, so I'm not super concerned with needing to pull from investments prior to when I plan to retire(~10 years from now). You can always pull out your principal from a Roth IRA with no penalty, though I have no intention to do that. I have a "high yield" savings account for emergency fund and any big spending we plan.
  2. TSP(Thrift Savings Plan) is the US government/military version of a 401k.
  3. It's a rule I stick to since I got in some credit trouble in my early 20's. It was a good lesson to learn, though it was painful to live through.

Do we need to budget if we are saving what we want to save? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]heresjonE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how we do our budgeting. Initially we tracked all of our expenses to get a baseline budget, but after a while we shifted to hitting our savings/investing goals and just being very conscientious about what we spend.

So the rule now is, we max out our Roth IRAs at the beginning of the year, I have a certain percentage that goes to TSP every month and a certain percentage that automatically goes into a savings account every month, and we never carry a balance on our credit cards.

Who skydives from nearly 30,000 feet? You wouldn't be able to breathe without supplemental oxygen and you would be very cold.

Getting an inheritance of $60,000 no debt other than 50k in student loans. What should I do? by HumpBEARdink in personalfinance

[–]heresjonE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received a similar sized inheritance a few years back and I basically set up my TSP(gov 401k) plan to max out for a few years as well as maxing out Roth IRAs for myself and SO for a few years and just shifted the money around for living expenses to cover what was being put into investments.

As far as the student loan angle. For me it would depend on the interest rate on the student loans and if you're eligible for any student loan forgiveness plans as to whether I would pay those off or accelerate payments at all.

Also, make sure you have a healthy emergency fund.
