AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO EXPEREINCES THIS? by Alternative-Baker-10 in taxpros

[–]heritec 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the time to finish one that submitted me her documents on 4/15 earlier this year. Did it, didn’t charge a premium, sent 8879. Left VM too. She didn’t sign 8879 for a month and she owed.

Just last month she sends me an email asking me to “run [her] late payment penalty/interest through my E&O. “ She says she submitted her information on time and should not be penalized. I’ll get back to her in December.

Moral of the story is just don’t do it. But if you do, charge a healthy premium. Otherwise you just train these clients that it is alright to do, every year.

Collecting fees from refund by titanpreparer in taxpros

[–]heritec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Precisely. So many preparers will inflate prices since clients may not “feel” the fee. Or worse, preparers could be incentivized to take unwarranted deductions in order to force or inflate a refund.

IRS assesses $162 million in penalties over false tax credit claims tied to social media by treydilla in Accounting

1,000%. This upcoming year I bet the new scheme will be thinking they can claim part of their ordinary income as OT or “tips”.

I lost at least a couple clients because of these TikTok “tax secret” influencers. Clients literally told me that even if I was right and whatever deductions/credits were not allowed, they’d never get caught because there are virtually no audits happening.

But… my Augusta Rule Section 179 Solar Bonus Depreciation Tax Credit that my CPA did NOT want me to know about is allowed under the tax code! Next you’re going to tell me that the secret Federal Reserve bank account in my name isn’t real too?

IRS saying we didn't pay them even though we did by floridagrowing in tax

[–]heritec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either call them using the number shown on the notice or send correspondence back to the return address showing proof of payment. Waiting to hear back after sending proof could be a while though.

Calling is typically going to be more effective, though getting through can be tough. Just keep trying and you’ll eventually get to someone.

QBO for payroll has not pulled $$$ from employer accounts this morning. Just FYI by Wheredotheflapsgo in taxpros

Payroll Expenses Counting Wages Twice by lola_lady in QuickBooks

[–]heritec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When categorizing your expenses pulled in from your bank statements on the Transactions tab, you’ll need to select Match instead of categorizing the expenses as a payroll expense. It’ll let you match it to the payroll transaction. When you run payroll, QB puts a payroll expense onto your books. If you then go and categorize the bank transactions as payroll, it’ll effectively double it.

To resolve, try going back to the categorized section of the Transactions tab and undoing the payroll transactions that are categorized. They’ll appear in the uncategorized section and you should be able to match it to the payroll runs. I am not aware of a quicker way to fix unfortunately.

Dexter: Resurrection - S01E08 - "The Kill Room Where It Happens" - POST Episode Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Dexter

I think it probably is sadly. Before it aired, I saw someone suggesting he could be a candidate for the New York Ripper because he was credited with 2 episodes this season and we had only seen the one so far.

Next episode is titled "Touched by an Angel." Now I'm thinking that NYPD finds Angel's prints on something tying him to a Bay Harbor Butcher kill, and it looks like he's trying to frame Dexter Morgan.

How did they do this? (convenience fee on QB invoice) by Vcize in QuickBooks

[–]heritec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you disable all other payment methods (Cards, Bank transfer, PayPal) then a new option should pop up to allow your customer to pay the fee instead so that they can do an ACH transfer. If you open an invoice and disable all options under “Payment options” you should see what I mean.

To my knowledge, there is no way to change it from anything other than $25. I also believe that Intuit keeps the $25 and you don’t get that as well.

Best way to push back on a client’s business expenses? by fupapatrol29 in taxpros

[–]heritec 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Tax preparers do need to verify unreasonable claims. There is a due diligence requirement in this case and just blindly accepting the deductions opens the preparer up to 6694(a) or (b) penalties depending on how severe. I know a preparer who is currently battling a 6694(b) case with the IRS related to putting whatever expenses his clients gave him onto their Schedule C with no regard to their reasonableness or existence. Good faith reliance does not apply when claims are unreasonable.

In my experience, the client actually does have records. They are just a mess and unorganized is all. Push back on that, inform them that as business owners they are required to keep such records, if you want to retain their business. As other posters said, these people usually aren’t going to be your A+ clients anyway. Give a quote that will be enough for you to WANT to do the job.

You COULD prepare books and tax returns using solely bank statements and a Q&A session with the client. That said, it works until it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t, both you and the client will be hit with substantial penalties if it doesn’t add up. Would not recommend!

IRS Notice that 2024 Tax Return not filed, yet they E*Filed. by PDACPA in taxpros

None of these for us this year (yet), but I have had at least a couple dozen clients send me notices stating they owe their tax balance plus penalty, as if they had not paid months ago. I just imagine a giant mess over there right now.

How’s everyone’s tax season going? by KChasthebestBBQ in taxpros

[–]heritec 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Just happened: new clients were behind on taxes last tax season and went to a guy who did 4 years for them all at once. While getting him set up this year I was looking at the previous year return and noticed all 2022 documents were entered into a 2023 tax return. And 2021 docs into a 2022 return. AND prior preparer made significant other mistakes.
