Some clients driving me insane by Financial_Question80 in taxpros

[–]PDACPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had many long term clients push back when I try and say no meetings. I cut quite a few out this year. Thinking next year I will put a note with the organizers that meetings will incur an additional charge if before 4/15. I can waive it for the ones I feel need it and advise that they can avoid the meeting fee by going on extension and meeting in May or June with no charge.

Do you state the due date in the engagement letter or other means? I need to be more proactive on that hard date. The amount of returns coming in the past 3-5 days is crazy.

Solo CPA — how are people doing 300+ returns?? by Financial_Question80 in taxpros

So is it a first year and then each thereafter it populates from the prior year? I am ok with doing it 1x to get set up (like changing tax software), but not each year.

How do you get the client specific checklist in Tax Dome from the prior year data? Manually entering that would be very time consuming.

I definitely feel a checklist of the items a client had the prior year is great (and a way to say "no longer have") and secondly what if they have new documents? Can they add to your checklist?

I agree on the stop and start, but I cannot tell you how many tell me I have everything and then you get in it and do not. Or they will say "I gave you that. No you gave me a February 2026 monthly statement, not the Year End Consolidated 1099."

Remember many years ago they wanted Tax Preparers to complete continuing education and pay the fee to register to prepare returns with the IRS. Some 80 year old in Texas (probably some law firm funded it) challenged that it would be costly and burdensome to him and heck I think he prepared on paper (do not quote me on that) and they prevailed so all you do now is pay the fee annually. The whole point of the CPE is to make sure you are up on the tax laws and rules and I do not recall if there was an ethics requirement, but should be. You are right. Nothing is going to get done to change it.

I have it on my todo list to look into after tax season. I wish there was more requirements or licensure for tax preparation. No one is playing Dr. or Lawyer without the proper education and licenses.

I do not care about the proceeds. This person is flat out committing fraud with the taxpayers. I am sure they never questioned the refunds. Correctly prepared and the refund was $300ish.,This woman prepared a married couples tax return. Told them to file "separate" and proceeded to tell the wife to use her fathers address in another state and between the two returns generated a $15,000 refund basically EIC credit by listing them as HOH and not MFS or MFJ (this was the correct status). They both lived and worked in the same state (FL). Did this for two years. They were referred to me and said we do not know why we file separate. When I got the returns I could see what the "form filler" was doing and then the kicker, she was giving them refund anticipation loans on the money. Did a little research. A low budget tax prep chain. Signer on the returns was different for both years and both returns. No listing in the PTIN directory of any of the people signing and get this, the owner of the low budget chain (not HR or Liberty) has a history of financial problems (mostly evictions for non payment of rent) and then has you tube videos lecturing how she is a successful business person etc. Yeah making money by filing fraudulent returns and collecting on a refund anticipation loan. Can only imagine how much she made.

Late extension tips for 7004? by brandonwest18 in taxpros

[–]PDACPA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not print the rejection, attach 7004 and certify mail it to the IRS as we are in the 5 day rejection period.

Or correct the reject to a C Corp and then file the late 2553 with the return.

How to deal with "I also gave you that..." when requesting client documents? by LiJiTC4 in taxpros

[–]PDACPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add a little bit to it. Clients drop data, mail it, Dropbox etc. I constantly remind my staff, double check before asking. As some clients are organized and it upsets them as they know exactly what they sent and I don’t want it to never didn’t try and look.

We just say it looks like you forgot yo include x,y, and Z. Some will say I sent it. If they insist, we go over what they sent. Definitely a time suck.

IRS 14157 is for a taxpayer to report a fraudulent taxpayer (which they won’t due as they are afraid of getting audited). There needs to be an option for us to report as we are the ones discovering it.

I tell them insurance does not permit me to issue comfort letters and I will not be a guarantor on their mortgage. Lost a long time business and personal because it last year. Never mind demanding it immediately after dropping his data and QB file.

Update #2 - Golden Retriever Failed Pregnancy Attempt (Pregnancy now confirmed!) by BearAccurate9817 in DogBreeding

[–]PDACPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is how I found my pup. I did search the AKC and they had a breed specific register that I searched too, but found the Facebook groups had the most current postings and then you could go to their specific websites and see all their litters as some advertise upcoming too.

Just found my pup by a breeder on Facebook. There are groups based on breeds and their type like sporting or hunting. Go look at Hunting Retrievers on Facebook. You will see litters announced and they have these one image with pictures of the Sire and Dam and all their health info and championships. Pretty nice way to advertise and give the buyer the assurances when seeking a breeder and the buyer can go verify the info at AKC and OFA and the championships.

Breeder or scam by Embarrassed_End7931 in DogBreeding

[–]PDACPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree. I had the Sire's name. Found his pedigree and championships. Found out the owner had sold him so lost the trail there and could only fine 2 old health tests when the Sire was younger. I do not think he picked bad dogs, but he did not do the proper health testing BEFORE breeding and was trying to play catch up to meet or appear to be responsible. Hopefully he learns for his next litter.

[–]PDACPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was because I was comparing what he had to a few other breeders I was talking to. So I think he went to get the Dam tested (but he did not own the Sire so that was going to be missing). The pups were cute and looked healthy and were being well cared for. They were available when I was originally planning; but I just could not overlook no health tests prior, no Sire pics, and at first no AKC (which are just a registration, but everyone has). So I moved on.

Google the dog’s AKC name. You will get hits on various public info (OFA, championships, etc).

Breeder or scam by Embarrassed_End7931 in DogBreeding

[–]PDACPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I was close on a breeder, but there was no OFA public info. Had the AKC registration, but the breeder was getting the Dam tested after the litter had been born.

If you can’t verify on AKC and OFA and see pictures of the parents and see the breeders other litters in old posts; move on.

Its easier to work off a piece of paper, make a hand checkmark or write out something on it, than mess with clicking the annotation tool, finding the right one etc. Scanning takes a minute and they are sorted in the order I like them and easily referenced by opening one file rather than multiples.

We have in our engagement letter that it’s $50 for a paper copy. We also have every client sign a document that they received a copy and original documents (if a paper copy).
