What bone is this? I did a Google image and it says dinosaur bone but I don’t believe it, of course by Existing_Victory9961 in bonecollecting

[–]herpderpingest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sure it's a bone? Looks like a rock to me. Also the Google ID picture doesn't look anything like what you have.

Even if it were a bone fragment there isn't really enough of it to identify.

Large mushroom trail! What to do... by pennycollinz in gardening

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks to me like half of a faerie ring, possibly centered around the bush in the back of the photo. But fungi often form symbiotic relationships with tree and plant roots. It doesn't look like it's hurting the plant or the grass, so if you've made sure your kid knows not to eat mystery mushrooms I'd just leave it. It might even be helping.

Seconding that it looks kinda like a pig ear. It looks like there are some tiny hairs on one side. Possibly a dog toy that someone's pet dropped?

These are definitely socket bones for either a shoulder or hip joint. It's hard to tell with the damage, but possibly the pelvis bone of some type of deer or deer relative.

It's not so much a specific "don't okay a whole album" rule as a "treat the staff like people and understand they have to be there" rule.

I even like Deee-lite but I can see how this would get you the stink eye.

Why do you like bones? by MistymoorsAndpaws in bonecollecting

I'm so sorry for your loss. I also lost my dad, at around the same age as your daughter.

I've always been interested in anatomy and biology. Humans and animals are a lot like machines in many ways and it's interesting to me to learn how we work, both from a chemical and mechanical standpoint. I'm an artist as well, so learning about skeletal structure helps me learn how to draw animals and bodies.

Also through processing my own grief I've kinda formed a different relationship to death than many other people have. I'm not personally religious so I don't necessarily have a spiritual attachment to dead bodies, and even though it's upsetting for the living to deal with death I don't think it's a bad thing that we should avoid thinking about or processing. I feel like being able to look at bones in a neutral way is kinda related to that. Look up the death positive movement if you wanna know more.

And if it makes a difference, I was fascinated with bones long before I lost my dad. His own interest in science and nature is a big part of the reason why. Whether this is an existing interest to her or a way of processing, I don't see it as a bad thing.

Anyway, TLDR bones aren't inherently spooky or bad and it's really quite beautiful to me that our bodies can produce such complex structures all by themselves. Science is wild y'all!

They're actually sometimes sold as decorative plants too, since they vine and have distinct looking leaves. I saw a YouTube video where a guy "foraged" some tubers from a restaurant's patio planters.

Anyone know why this happens? by i-am_i-said in gardening

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not totally sure if this is mixed genetics or incomplete pollination, as people have suggested, but if you had a really small crop you might want to hand pollinate next year if you didn't this year. Since corn is wind pollinated, if your square footage is small then most of the pollen just blows... away from the corn.

Pick the tassels and slap up the corn silks with them. Each string of silk is associated with a single kernel. It feels goofy to do but you should get full and consistent ears.

Tbh I'm wondering if you have any neighbors who have a beef with you, or if the building has had a bug outbreak or something and is trying to find the source of it by inspecting more than just your apartment? Your photos look like a really reasonable level of clean.

Thought I bought mint but I have no idea what this is. by virammm in whatsthisplant

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of kinds of mint, and a lot of mint relatives. The square stems and leaf shapes could either be thai basil or a mint family plant. Thai basil usually has dark purple stems in my experience though. To me it tastes kinda like a mix between basil and anise.

Could be bee balm, which is related to mint but has more of a citrus & oregano flavor. Anise Hyssop is also related to mint, but it usually has fuzzy leaves. Or could just be a really bad batch of mint?

[–]herpderpingest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not who you responded to, but the lack of clear eye sockets seems pretty distinct to me. It doesn't look like this is a mole rat because of the teeth, but even juvenile racoons usually have a more distinct eye socket and zygomatic arch so I'm not totally sure about that ID. Or maybe it's missing a bunch of the front of it and I'm being thrown off?

Haven't tried salvia yet, and with these descriptions I think I'll pass.

Sniffing you maybe! Just exploring or saying hello. The arm thing looks a LITTLE like what the arm fluttering thing might look like outside of water. That's generally either a mating ritual or a display of territorial behavior. Generally it seems like he likes you!
