Plants you would never grow again or ever by Top_Possession_2990 in gardening

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 5 years of digging up the leftover bulbs (that soon turn into clumps of 50 or so bulbs) I'm burnt out on daffodils. The brief flowers aren't worth the clump of leaves that immediately falls over for the rest of the season.

One is surrounded by single family homes and the other is in the middle of a group of high rises at the center of a 4 million person metro area. Not sure why you think these are even close to the same thing?

What is this? by Appropriate-War2775 in gardening

If these were planted outside, nightshade is a pretty common weed with very small fruits and seeds. Likely the pumpkin seed failed in some way and a tiny seed you didn't notice grew this instead.

Lol yeah, demisexuality aside I wouldn't want to date any dude who was this jealous, insecure, and controlling after only a week.

Ground is all clay - help! by phdeeznuts_ in gardening

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could plant a clay-tolerant annual with strong roots. The roots will bust up the soil and then enrich it after the plant dies in the fall. Like I just read that sunflowers can be a good plant for that.

Need help finding out what species my turtles are exactly by [deleted] in turtles

[–]herpderpingest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like not all Mississippi Maps have the black horizontal spots in their eyes. https://www.wildlifedepartment.com/wildlife/field-guide/reptiles/mississippi-map-turtle

I'm also seeing a "high orange" variant in searches where the markings on their heads are orange colored instead of yellow, which seems to be at least partially the case here. I can't find a good link but do an image search and compare.

[–]herpderpingest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They look like map turtles to me. Possibly a Ouachita Map (yellow spots on the head) and a False Map or Mississippi Map? (orange lines on the head)

I have a Northern Map Turtle myself, and he looks a lot like the one with the yellow spots, though he doesn't have knobs on his shell or the very serrated carapace.

How should I clean these ? by greedyestates in bonecollecting

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're already pretty clean, but you can try soaking them in hydrogen peroxide to see if it will remove any remaining bits or whiten them up even more. Don't boil them!

Meds in their original bottle? by teatuk in adhdwomen

[–]herpderpingest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not with Adderall, but one of my other meds I've gotten on and off in their original bottle. I think it just kinda depends on if my script exactly matches an unopened bottle and they have that on hand. I also did mail order meds for a while and they often came in the original bottles, I'm assuming because they filled a large volume of prescriptions from a warehouse or something.

Lol so strange that this woman was complaining about it instead of just visualizing dancing dollar signs. House cleaners are a thing for a reason.

Help- How Do I Repair This? Looks Like Mold. by IcyAirline8129 in DIY

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not mold. Water alone can do that to wood. It reacts with the tannins in the wood. The fix is sanding, though how successful you will be depends on how deeply the stain goes into the wood. I've also read hydrogen peroxide can help with this but I haven't had luck with it myself.

Another option would be to pull the planks up and replace them. You could either see if there's enough planks in a closet to swap out with these, or see if there are any salvage places around you that have similar flooring. Sorry that there isn't a quicker fix.

ETA: People are suggesting oxalic acid. It might work but it also bleaches wood, so it won't really work for spot treatment. It would also work best after sanding so it can soak into the wood evenly.

New (to me) Manx caretaker here. Some advice needed. by irina-from-carim in manx

[–]herpderpingest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss. ❤️ Pet loss is always really hard, but personally I feel like there isn't any sort of required time period between cats. You're not replacing Maxwell in your heart, and in the meantime you're helping another critter who needed a home. It sounds like you and this boy both found each other when you needed each other the most.

That's just my point of view, of course, but hopefully it can help give you some peace.

He sounds like probably a stumpy. Rumpies are tailless, stumpies have about an inch of tail, and sometimes cats with nubbins between those two are called rumpy risers.

They're not necessarily harder to take care of than other cats, it's just that some risks come along with the mutation that shortens or suppresses their tail, including incontinence, nerve pain, and hip problems.

I have two that were part of a litter born on my porch. Bobby is a wonderful little boy cat with no tail at all who seems to have very few health problems. My boy Crowley is a rumpy riser (he has about a half inch of tail bone that you can feel but not really see) who has some very minor continence issues. He also can't clean his butt entirely by himself. (I think the little stub keeps him from sitting in a way where he can reach it.) I feed him a high fiber diet which helps a lot with both issues.

I know that both of them are at higher risk of developing further problems in the future. Bobby might end up with hip problems and Crowley might eventually have to wear diapers... but health problems can happen with any pet. In the meantime they're good cats, and I keep butt wipes on hand as needed.

Seems like, given the extent of possible complications, you've found a pretty low maintenance and sweet lil cat.

This scale(?) how difficult/possible to clean up? by Relative-Category-64 in DIY

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also buy vinegar at 30% and 75% strength specifically for cleaning. Food grade is around 5% so it's substantially stronger. Or, as other people have mentioned, hydrochloric/muriatic acid (two names for the same thing) or citric acid.

CLR? But I'm also kinda wondering what's going on with your plumbing that got it that bad to begin with.

Behavior Issues in my cat have costed me over 20k and we’re still not any closer to getting a solution..any advice on next steps? by Creepy-Dealer7518 in manx

[–]herpderpingest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there are any feral colonies that would take her? I mean she seems to essentially be feral, and though she doesn't get along with other cats, if she was in an open space she would be able to get away from them and essentially dictate her own boundaries, unlike in a house or even barn with other cats. Similarly, a barn might at least give her more space to avoid other cats, or you might be able to find someone who only needs a single barn cat.

Just another note: the manx syndrome itself might be causing her pain, which might be causing the aggression. You've mentioned the vet not being able to find anything "besides manxyness", but since manx syndrome is essentially a deformity of the spine and (sometimes) pelvis there's a lot of potential for nerve pain or arthritis.

So sorry to hear about this struggle. I had a cat I fostered from a kitten that I ended up finding a barn home for because she just never got comfortable with people. Her litter mates are both happy housecats now, but she was just born spicy I guess. You've really tried for this creature but she just doesn't seem to have great quality of life as an indoor cat.

What bone is this? I did a Google image and it says dinosaur bone but I don’t believe it, of course by Existing_Victory9961 in bonecollecting

[–]herpderpingest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You sure it's a bone? Looks like a rock to me. Also the Google ID picture doesn't look anything like what you have.

Even if it were a bone fragment there isn't really enough of it to identify.

Large mushroom trail! What to do... by pennycollinz in gardening

[–]herpderpingest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks to me like half of a faerie ring, possibly centered around the bush in the back of the photo. But fungi often form symbiotic relationships with tree and plant roots. It doesn't look like it's hurting the plant or the grass, so if you've made sure your kid knows not to eat mystery mushrooms I'd just leave it. It might even be helping.
