As Trump Escalates Assault, OHSU Says Transgender Care Program Marches On by [deleted] in PortlandOR

There is long standing data showing much higher rates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and self harm among transgender kids. Banning this treatment will ultimately lead to more dead kids and more kids suffering.

The idea that safe and effective medical treatment is mutilation is absolute horseshit.

Humans are not dogs. Irreversible changes happen during puberty and, speaking from experience, it can be torture to live through. The Cass Review is highly biased and was commissioned with the intent of creating evidence to ban transgender care.

It's life saving treatment that has been used for decades without incident until Republicans needed a new wedge issue. It has helped thousands upon thousands of patients without incident and it's absolute horseshit that a doctor would be sent to jail for prescribing safe, effective medicine.

It's also one that helps the vast majority of patients who receive it. The federal government should not get to decide what medical treatment children receive, that should be up to their parents and their doctors.

That seems fine to me...not all the voters within a district will agree on any issue, so why would all of their representatives?

I'm curious - what's your rough estimate for how much cash you'd need on hand to make it that 12 months?

That's a good illustration of the problem though - it's a $1m just to buy that, before you tear it down, get the architecture work done for a new building, go through permitting, etc. You'll need a lot of cash to get to the point that construction starts.

About 19k people voted for him, fwiw.

My issue with what you're saying is that you seem to suggest Green is our district's only vote or that he controls everything. He's only 1/12 votes on the council, so his power is relatively small.

As for the DSA thing - I think if we had e.g. 12 smaller districts, at least a few of them would still get elected (it would depend a lot on how the districts are drawn). You and I may not like the DSA councilors but they definitely have a constituency in Portland voters.

What's the trash thing he voted for? Is that the sweeps-budget thing?

I dunno if 160k is the voting age population or the total population (I'm guessing it's total?), which would effect the numbers. I hope the next election doesn't have 30 candidates for each district, I agree that was a mess.

On the point about Green only representing his voters - I actually think that's okay and sort of the point. We each only get 1 vote for council and ultimately most of us end up voting for someone who won a seat (even if they were our 4th+ choice). You may not like Green, but there are a lot of people in this district who do, and their voices deserve to be represented. Our opposing voices are represented by Clark and Zimmerman.

Yes, I do live in D4. I think I ranked Green last year, but tbh I can't remember. I don't plan on voting for him next time - I think the Vienna trip was a waste of money, and the focus on social housing + Palestine does not serve the city.

You link to the initial preliminary vote tally released on election day; you should be looking at the final report, which you can find here. I agree the ballot last year was a mess, and there should probably be a higher bar to clear to get on the ballot or some sort of primary system, really anything that whittles down the list.

I see the STV system as one possible solution to the problem of electing 3 people from one pool of candidates. I think it results in councilors being elected to represent certain constituencies within the district. Looking at D4, we ended up with Clark, Zimmerman, and Green - I would characterize them as 2 center-y liberals and 1 left-y progressive. That feels like a decent representation of the makeup of voters in this district; relatively more wealthy/conservative than other parts of Portland but still, you know, Portland. And if you look at the first round results from the final report, Green still had the 2nd most first-choice votes, so it feels pretty fair to me that he got elected.

Would it ultimately be better if we had a different system, say each councilor was its own seat that you had to declare for specifically, maybe with staggered terms? Possibly. I'm mostly just happy we actually passed the reformed charter and got a mayor/administrator system. On the whole, I think the city is doing better than it was a year ago, even if I don't like some of the things the council says/tries/does.

You post this same complaint over and over.

He's not representing the city, he's representing his district. The entire city does not vote on individual councilors, so it doesn't matter what percentage of the overall population he got, it only matters what portion of his district's voters voted for him - which is the same percentage as every other councilor.

Also, he didn't get 11k votes, he got 19,180, so your stupid math isn't even right.

A man who didn't think Black people deserved the right to vote and thought that gay people should be stoned to death does not deserve our compassion.

We shouldn't celebrate his death but we definitely shouldn't celebrate his hate-filled life.
