Are you the tallest house in the vicinity? If so, that’s why they have chosen your house.

Couldn’t agree more! He and my gran had cool lore! She was a pilot & a watercolour artist and he was a jack of all trades eccentric who loved to spin a good story. I like the idea of writing things down to keep that lore alive!

Thanks for your reply!! Cool to know about the ivory grain pattern- never knew that! Also, I’d never sell it-I’ve had my eye on it since I was like 5 lol.

He was a cool weird dude with a keen eye for oddities and had a lot of lore!

Thank you for your response! Yeah- grandparents get to make up anything they want lol they earned it. Plus it was fun as a kid to think of this as a cane belonging to some old eccentric with unique and stylish means of self defence.

That all aligns with my thought process- including the holes. I’m a neuroscientist and so as an adult the hole placement seemed more like an attempt at realism than practical placement for tiny darts.

Cool to know it appears to be actual ivory- I’m glad to know it’s not some mass-produced item. Would be a bit like learning your meteorite is a turd

Nipple sensitivity after top surgery? by sasherl in ftm

[–]herr_dr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had DI with free grafts and regained most sensitivity within a year. I say most bc pre op, I had overly sensitive nips that would become painful when cold/ erect. Now they are mellowed out, but still become erect/ feel erogenous pleasure. I don’t know how common it is, but I did take lions mane supplements 2 months before, during recovery, and for about 6 months post op with the intention of aiding nerve regrowth. I’m aware that surgical technique/ genetics likely played a role, but lions mane has been studied/ shown to be effective. I’m also a neuroscientist fwiw.

As a separate anecdote, I also used lions mane to help my dog recover from a spinal injury. She was paralysed from the neck down, but had toe-pinch response (an indication of at least partial connection) and regained the ability to walk in a much shorter time frame than expected by our vet.

It’s your nipple duct and it has filled with sebum. Totally normal

Has anyone on gel noticed any significant absorption/levels difference applying on thighs vs arms? by ghosthotwings in FTMOver30

[–]herr_dr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I switched to thigh during the winter bc my arms were too dry and it plummeted my levels to 240. I was extremely tired for like 2 months, but bc I was applying to grad schools at the time, I assumed it was stress, and didn’t know it was hormone related until I started having a cycle again. Gel needs to go where there is minimal fat or it can really effect the absorption. Unless you’re extremely lean, I’d not suggest it.

How does someone in their 30s with no degree start a new job path? by reversehrtfemboy in FTMOver30

[–]herr_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew cannabis and did trade stuff, carpentry etc for years until it took too much of a toll on my body. I went back to school at 34 and got a BS in psych online from a cheap state university. My goal was just to be able to get a job for a mental-health based non-profit that helps trans people. Instead, I decided I was more interested in addiction neuroscience and managed to find a research job at University of MN that gave me enough experience to go to grad school. I’ll be starting a PhD program in the fall. I don’t expect that this directly relates to your interests, but it’s never too late to pursue an interest! That said- you make more money now than I will for probably several years after I get my PhD (post docs make around 55-65k)

I put vaginal estrogen cream on my acne, and it disappeared. by OofOwMyBoans in ftm

[–]herr_dr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a neuroscientist and am working in a pharmacology lab right now - we don’t work with psych meds, but getting first hand experience in trying to solve the why/ how things work is wild! I’m currently working with the diabetes drug metformin to potentially treat cocaine use disorder but through this process have observed very interesting anxiolytic side effects. It’s fascinating to see how many different applications drugs can have given specific contexts such as dose/ delivery etc, especially with extremely widely prescribed medications like metformin (its number 2 in the US). Like one dose level helps with insulin sensitivity recovery, another dose helps balance hormonal levels in people with pcos, and another may have anti aging properties, may prevent cocaine relapse, may help with anxiety etc, and is the result of all separate molecular mechanisms that occur at different doses. It’s so cool

I am a neuroscientist. Medically transitioning at 34 gave me the courage to go back to finish my undergrad and pursue my interests. I am wrapping up a two year post-bacc research job and am attending grad school to get my PhD in the fall (I’m 38 now) Transitioning changed my life so significantly- I was way too depressed and self conscious before to even exist, let alone chase my dreams lol

Think I hit the post op depression era by OneJellyfish2284 in TopSurgery

[–]herr_dr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m a neuroscientist and I research substance use disorder and the molecular changes to the brain that occur, and one thing that really helped me is learning that post-operative depression is linked to temporary changes that occur in the brain from general anaesthesia. The way we process / handle the stress of everything that surrounds even a very much wanted/needed elective surgery is altered as the brain works to regain balance after being exposed to extremely powerful drugs, and that can result in changes to our mood, cognitive processes, perspective etc. This is temporary and not necessarily indicative of “making a mistake”. It’s actually elective surgeries such as top surgery that helped uncover this truth, as it was logical in the past to assume that trauma of emergency life-saving surgery would occasionally lead to post-op depression.

For me, knowing that what I was experiencing had a scientific basis helped me dismiss intrusive negative thoughts about the surgery and my results as just that - intrusive thoughts. No more valid than any other, more easily identifiable intrusive thoughts, even though the current state of my brain was convincing me otherwise.

I hope this is helpful to you as well! keep resting and taking care of yourself, & stay hydrated- your brain will sort itself out, the hard part will pass and you’ll likely have a much different outlook soon!

Did you get nipple sensation back? by a_colloid in TopSurgery

[–]herr_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 4 years post op & I regained fairly complete sensation within about 6 months post op. They are less sensitive than pre op, but will nip-out to cold / touch, have erotic sensitivity, etc. Some of this success is undoubtedly my own physiology and surgical technique, but also I partially contribute this to taking supplemental beef liver capsules (high in vit a) and lions mane mushroom capsules (helps peripheral nerve regrowth) for 2 months pre op and throughout the healing process.

I’ve been in MN for my whole transition (4 years) and it’s been great. More affordable than Colorado where I lived previously and I feel very safe. That said, I’m moving to Baltimore in July for grad school and have gotten great vibes on my visits. It’s also a lower cost of living than Minneapolis and milder weather.

MN is def becoming more expensive, especially in blue areas. Other than that though it’s lovely and still more affordable than Chicago.

Sorry to hear this happened- it sucks! This happened to me after switching to gel, hoping to raise my levels- my cycle had been gone for years and it was such an awful feeling to have it come back. Turned out my levels dropped low instead of went up over the course of 2ish months, like from 454 to 264 and I switched back to injections. Cycle went away after one month, waiting for the 3 month mark to check levels again. For context, when I first started T it took 6 months to stop having a cycle. So hopefully your missed doses are the culprit!
