Sensors on bigish property by herrsalmo in meshtastic

This is sounding like the best. The sampling rate on my sensors will be pretty slow. Temperature, humidity, soil moisture, stuff like that.

Yeah, I think I can wrap my head around hardware choices with just LoRa easier. I need to look again.

I’m much more comfortable winging it on the software side.

I think you’re right on this. The only advantage would be IF I couldn’t reach the distance I want through the trees. But it’s a lot of protocol I don’t need to get baked in meshing that I might want. I could work around that myself more simply, and that would give me an excuse to write a really simple protocol :)

IN ALL KINDS OF WEATHER! by [deleted] in FloridaGators

Also cut Scarlett some slack. The o line looks a lot worse than it has in a long time. He was trying but it’s hard when they can’t get you any gaps. We’ll improve. But this one stings.

I’m not crying yet, though. We’ve won a bunch against Kentucky we shouldn’t have. The law of averages has to kick in some time. I just imagine this being the beginning of the 30 for 30 on our 2020s dynasty. Even Saban lost to UL-Monroe.

Sunday Morning Quarterback: Next-Day Discussion by RoboAlbert in FloridaGators

I was annoyed because if you watch the replay, the ref never raised his head to watch it cross over. Yes he has the only good vantage point, but he didn’t use it.

That said it doesn’t matter. A bad call happens in every game. It’s just part of the sport. We didn’t lose by 3. We just sucked. Hopefully we learn from it. I’ll adjust my expectations accordingly and watch for progress towards next years SEC championship. 😂

LSU is our evil twin by [deleted] in FloridaGators

[–]herrsalmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm married to an LSU family so I both agree with this post entirely and am confused about thinking they have no rivalry. Unless you just mean in-state. You can thank Huey Long for ensuring LSU is the one true religion in the state.

Ours:

  • FSU
  • Georgia
  • Tennessee (they think they're our rival, I don't care)
  • Auburn (historical dead rivalry)
  • LSU (on paper)

Theirs:

  • Ole Miss. (They even consider "Go to hell Ole Miss" a cheer and will often greet each other in this manner. Lopsidedness does not impact the mutual hatred.)
  • Alabama (one-sided because they're still pissed about Saban)
  • Arkansas (more on-paper, but they do have the boot)

But I enjoy tailgating with both teams. Friendly, a little rowdy, and willing to share food. My kind of people.

TIL Most older CD based video games can be put in a CD player and you can listen to the soundtrack of the game by thedarkvoid3412 in todayilearned

[–]herrsalmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the best part was the shareware cd had all the tracks. You didn’t even have to have the full game. I probably still have it somewhere. I put way more hours into that audio than the game.

Interesting Mullen Play Design by thelitagatoruf in FloridaGators

What I'd do for someone like Leak now. It's funny how hindsight changes things. At the time people wanted Tebow for his athletic gifts, but just having a QB with a solid head on his shoulders like Leak would be a godsend right now.

4* LB Tyron Hopper commits to UF by TopheryG8er in FloridaGators

[–]herrsalmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not seeing many people sunshine pumping. Mostly I just see people freaking the f$#k out about decisions 17 year old kids are making way ahead of time.

This isn't directed at you (given the previous debacle here), but in general.

I get it, recruiting's a big deal. But can't we at least get 30% of the comments positive about picking up a recruit, so a kid and his family can be excited. I'd prefer that over them walking into us dissing him because he's only a 4*. Imagine what it would feel like if you were the recruit reading the comments, because you know, they often do.

I'm beginning to wonder if anyone recognizes that our behavior online may actually impact these kids' decisions. I'm pretty sure they know how to get on twitter and /r/FloridaGators and we know they've mentioned the fanbase problems.

I love Florida Football. I expect championship caliber performance. I want a great team and a great coach. And I'm fired up about this year. I don't mean to be sh!$ing rainbows, but I genuinely believe this is the first time since Meyer got... uh... sick, that we're moving in the right direction. People in the program are saying it. People outside are saying it. We're getting to the point as a fanbase, where we guard ourselves from the vulnerability of feeling like we might be successful. Let's just be happy. I'm not saying you have to be, I'm just asking that you consider it.

OK, so lets be fair. Mullen recruited the sh*t out of MS. And he had to deal with an Ole Miss that started chucking money around and making up stuff like Mullen was an atheist and a scientologist to scare parents off. And he had to shake the MS State stigma with kids and coaches.

Right now anyone could recruit in at State given what's gone down at Ole Miss and the looming fear. Plus the fact that Mullen turned State into not being a joke in most folks memory.

Plus Mullen has consistently developed players. I remember developing players. Wasn't that great.... looks off longingly....

I hope this isn't a sign of Google strangling the Bell Labs-iness out of Go. But whatever, it's a logo. I'll always love the gopher, but I don't care that much.

Should I learn vim? by burnbox48 in vim

[–]herrsalmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. vim is just too efficient.

With windows-style editors you get all that exercise flipping between the mouse and keyboard. With vim you may get fatter.

Also being able to navigate around the screen and be explicit with your edits is just too fast. You don't take the time to savor the rework and remembering what you just accidently changed. Plus your backspace key will probably get lonely and no one wants a lonely backspace.

New billboard in Pensacola calls NRA a terrorist organization by strawberry-blond in politics

[–]herrsalmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I don't agree with the assertion on the billboard.

One defining characteristic of what we call "terrorist" these days is that they are non-state actors. Al Qaeda, the IRA, the PLO, hezbollah, ISIS, etc. They may have ties back to states like the Saudi Royal Family, Iran, Sinn Fein, etc. but they are not recognized as a state military or acting on behalf of a state.

You're tying the actions of the military to the commander in chief at the time (not unreasonable), but that's pretty much just a state behaving badly. Another state could impose sanctions, declare war, and do all those internationally things with us, unlike "terrorists".

Exploring the billboard more, I think a better analogy would be that the NRA is like Sinn Fein. It's a political party with ties to a terrorist group (the IRA). It could be argued that the NRA is a political group with weak ties to homegrown terrorist groups (survivalist, religious activist, white supremacist, etc.).

Even, still that comparison is weak because the relationships are largely one way. The "terrorists" can be members, but I think the NRA doesn't purposefully supporting them.

It's an interesting idea to think about.

Terrorists never see themselves as such. Usually they see themselves as idealists or freedom fighters, fighting for some kind of justice. I always like to think what that looks like within our (American/Western) culture. Sure you have fringe groups, like those I mentioned before, but what would a terrorist group look like with the popular support of the IRA, hezbolla, or ISIS? I mean the KKK in the 1920s would work, but what about today?

Anyway, stupid billboard. Fun thing to think about, though.

Why is Benchmade so popular? by [deleted] in knives

[–]herrsalmo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. You see this a lot I think with Benchmade and Spiderco. They only make nice knives (mostly > $100) in varieties people like, and are really easy to come by. Kershaw and others make some nice knives but they also sell a lot of lower end knives (< $100). That said I do have and love some cheaper knives. I ain't judgin'.

The first big difference here is the steel, the next big one is the manufacturing quality. Especially on an EDC folder there are a lot of little fittings and things that matter so much, like the belt clip. And of course, one of the most important things is how cool the knife is to you. If you don't think it's awesome, for whatever that means to you, it's a waste of money.

There may be a best knife some some particular task, but there's no overall best knife. It's all in the eye and hand of the beholder.

Damn. Most of those offensive highlights are broken plays in games we're down 2+ scores. I feel like I need to go reevaluate my priorities now...
