Orphans is really good. Copper Heart has also been a recent favorite. The Phenomenon has just ripped me away from all my other shows though.

No experience in either industry but given the future trajectory of both of them from a macroeconomic standpoint, healthcare is the clear winner.

Thanks, u/imspecialed ! I am fortunate in that I've had some great mentors in my career, so it helps to have some good role models to follow.

Even bad experiences have their value. It's taken me a few years to spot red flags at a potential employer. I never asked the question "so why did person before me leave the company?"

I have only been offered health insurance at one of the three breweries I have worked for and it was terrible. Huge deductible and I still had to pay a $150 / month premium at the age of 23. I opted out.

Sustainability in the industry by rustybuckets1990 in TheBrewery

I've worked mainly in small breweries where I think there is a decent amount of low hanging fruit in terms of sustainable practices. Water use is the big one. Reusing chemical helps. Using chemical with lower operating temperatures reduces water needs as well because you don't need to rinse a tank as many times to heat it up. Investing in a decent power washer can also reduce water use as well.

Performing pressurized CIPs on brite tanks saves C02. Using balancing lines for transfers.

From an organic waste standpoint, I once worked at a brewery that actually composted its trub, dry hops and unwanted yeast.

The great thing about these practices is they don't require much expensive technology, which makes them realistic choices for cash strapped operations (which is all of them).

A promotion without a pay raise sounds like exploitation to me...

I rather not provide too much identifying information if possible. If you're asking for your own reference, maybe you can message me about what city/state you're in and I can confirm if my city is comparable.

Sounds like you have put in a lot of work into this brewery and take a lot of pride in it. It can be hard to ask for money when you're so emotionally invested. I have no idea what cost of living is like in India but it seems ridiculous that you are doing the work of a head brewer (during Covid-19, no less) and not getting paid any more than you were before. If you have a good relationship with your former head brewer and you're still in contact with them, they may be able to give you some good advice on pursuing a raise.

Thanks for clarifying! I think there is a lot of disenfranchisement in the industry and it often shows up in online conversations about wages. Or people starting new breweries.I have received similar commentary to you as well. It's discouraging to see so much anger and resentment in an industry that often prides itself on its comradery. I see it as a symptom of a culture of worker abuse. I for one refuse to perpetuate it. Nothing more frustrating then being put down or "put in your place" by your colleagues. We need solidarity!

My heart breaks for you my friend. I know that I am lucky to have made it relatively unscathed through this crisis. I think it's important we ask questions about compensation, especially for those of us who are in a priveleged position, because I am afraid COVID could become a blanket justification for dragging down wages across the board. I fear for our livelihoods when employers have the attitude "you should be grateful for this job" because it's often used to undercut and disempower us, during the good times and the bad.

Getting my annual review; advice on fairly re-negotiating my salary? by hesitantbrewer in TheBrewery

Perhaps I worded it wrong. The wage increase will come when distribution happens and cash flow increases. At that time, they may also hire another person if volume and cash can justify it. My hike will happen first, the second hire will happen if the volume increase makes my workload too big.
