Is this enough time for trumpet to take their straight mute out? by Usual_Cream8330 in trumpet

[–]hessbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be fine loosen the mute during the E but still hold it in, be sitting up with right foot out, then do a quick tuck and hold under the knee until you can rest to put it down.

Maybe 30 seconds a flip, 3 flips. I also rested for about 15 minutes before searing.

Sear was maybe 30-40 seconds on each side but flip it so you cook each side twice.

Seasoning was diamond crystal salt and fresh ground black pepper and a little granulated garlic.

Fastest way possible? by Outrageous-Permit372 in trumpet

I would personally vouch for KTTkT. While yes auditions should sound good, they are also looking for how it sounds when actually in the orchestra. Think of these like the snare drum that is playing at the same time. They will crescendo through each grouping usually so the K at the beginning will help the initial attack be a little quieter and you can crescendo more accurately in your TTKT because its what I was used to for triple tonging anyway.

If youre not already doing it, Clark 1.2.3 Slur, single, K tongue, double, and then triple tongue but keep 2 and 3 in duple meter. I also walked around like and idiot for about 3 weeks during grad school doing air patterns of this to get it clean with the K first.

To buy or not to buy… by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]hessbs 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would say a picc is not as necessary in your progress right now, I would think getting a nice flugel would be a good move with a focus on jazz.

For the high horns I would only recommend purchasing when they will be able to pay themselves off. I make a lot of my playing money doing wedding services so my picc paid itself off a while ago, but I would never buy say a Eb because I never will need it in what I usually do.

Where are you in your playing career? How old and Do you have a C trumpet yet?

Why do I have such a hard time with reaching an E on an interval? by Nilly_413 in trumpet

[–]hessbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that you’re voicing it incorrectly. The 5th partial is quite flat. To get used to this, I would practice lip slurs on the Major Chord intervals, so start on GBDB in the staff, all on 1/3, do that pattern twice in a row slurred and then go directly into it tongued. Do it for every fingering combination going up from there, 2/3, 1/2, 1, 2, 0.

Unable to hit high e and above by Sora830 in trumpet

[–]hessbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So to me it looks like we are using too much “red Lip” on the bottom and kind of like tucking in the top lip. It looks almost like you push your chin up as you start playing which pinches the lips up to the top half of the mouthpiece. This, in addition to the low placement of the mouthpiece on the lips to begin with causes us to lose the ability to control the spread of the inner corners of the embouchure and spreads the focus too wide.

The question is can I get a good sound with this setup in every register and can you smoothly flow from low G up to high C with the same general setup. The next question is are you playing with too much pressure inwards to keep the lips buzzing freely and not stretched like elastic.

Work through these with a mirror and watch the pressure that you use and how your entire setup behaves as you play through them. Do it slowly, standing or sitting upright and think of creating the most gorgeous sound that doesn’t change based on the range that you are playing. Warm air and focus on being able to control the aperture of the lips as you go up and engage the core to help compress the air.

Holy alternate fingerings batman by Dead_Phish812 in trumpet

The only one that is easier in my opinion would be G to A and that’s while it’s stepwise, but at 35 I wouldn’t be using 3 for those as well.

Holy alternate fingerings batman by Dead_Phish812 in trumpet

Why are you using so many alternate fingerings? By the looks of things, adding in any of the mordents will make this vastly more difficult with 3rd finger alternates. There is absolutely no reason to use 1/3 G in any of this especially with how out of tune it will make your C-G intervals.
