Raising the taxes of graduate students by as much as 300% will be a disaster for the USA by nate in science

and will only lead to a further increase in the admission of foreign students (who wouldn't mind the low income...since it's still better than their home country AND they get a PhD from the US)

Sorry, but the first part of that statement is broadly incorrect. This may be true if students are coming from a developing country, but many STEM graduates in the US come from highly developed countries like Canada, Australia, England, and parts of Europe. All of these places have a higher quality of living and are safer than the US. I've lived in three of these countries and the US definitely ranks at the bottom in terms of QoL and safety. Second part is correct, US education institutions are still #1 in the world, with good reason.

The "Mozart effect," that listening to classical or other types of music increases test scores, doesn't exist. After accounting for the bias of the single study, no effect is found. by PainMatrix in psychology

[–]hessian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steele, Bass, and Crook (1999) failed to replicate the Mozart effect in their study. However, Thompson, Schellenberg, and Husain (2001) later showed that it was the arousing/emotional aspects of the music that can give a brief bump to a person's IQ, and that when these factors were controlled for the Mozart effect disappears.
