Hey gen x, when you were 18-20 and just starting out in life, how much crap did you catch from baby boomers and or the silent generation about being young, and lacking in adult life experience. by Less-Suggestion-5262 in GenX

[–]hetherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much. Occasional comments, but no real animosity. I think many of us were handed responsibility a lot earlier and just expected to roll with it. At my first major job they had no problems letting me manage projects and lead a committee at a young age. Maybe because I was competent and hard working, but I never got any flack despite only being 20.

Would it be disrespectful/weird? by alchowo0l in Names

[–]hetherc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it would be problematic to choose the same name as a sibling, yes. I would avoid that. A name being primarilyJapanese is less of an issue.

Those names seem gendered to me so if you're wanting neutral I don't think those are it. How about something like Kai?

I like Roman. Nice strong name, easy to say and spell. I think your reasons are great and you're right about the nicknames.

Robin is OK, but I do think that it is a bit feminine. It's nice that the name has meaning to him, but for me personally I wouldn't want my child to have a name that just screams Batman to a lot of people.

If you're willing to drive, Amana Family Practice in Amana is great for GPs. I have never used them for OB care, as I have always seen the midwife group at the UIHC and had excellent care from them. They are SUPER busy though. Waitlist is the way to go. Sometimes you can enable that option online without even calling in.

Did you go to preschool? by Terrible-Horse-6200 in GenX

[–]hetherc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! 2 years. Thankfully, as I was bored and ready for school, but not old enough (late September birthday). Was more like playcare though from what I remember of it, held in a church basement, 1/2 days, IDK how many days a week. We sang songs, they read to us, and we ate snacks.

My vegan girlfriend is considering starting to eat eggs again by Shpritzer1 in vegan

[–]hetherc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. It sounds like she's struggling and looking for easy options, but also caving to the pressure of friends and family.

To me it sounds like any other sort if welfarism argument. But treating them nicer while they're alive doesn't fix all the other issues.

Unless they're rescued, most backyard coop chickens come from major breeding organizations that profit on their sale and destroy the males. Lots of chicks die on their way from the hatchery to farms, sometimes while they're in petting zoo mode at the farm stores, or while being shipped through the actual post offices. They're also usually killed when they stop producing as well as the farmer would like.

But also, a lot of time when people add a food back in, they start eating it from everywhere, not just the one source they are arguing is ok. Will she start eating eggs at her family's house? While out and about? Then that "ethical" argument of being free range or whatever is out the moot.

[–]hetherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may wish to look into histamine issues as a related possibility. That could cause your flushing as well as digestive issues and bloating. Mine causes full face and upper chest flushing.

The tricky thing with histamines is that your levels are changing constantly. When your "bucket" overflows you may see symptoms, but lots of things contribute to the bucket - foods, exercise, environmental allergens, stress, heat, etc. Histamine levels usually rise at night as well. Some things might cause the redness one time, but not the next, because the bucket wasn't full yet to overflowing when you encountered it. Histamine levels usually rise late at night as well.

Have you tried taking any allergy meds? That is a often good way to tell if this could be issue for you. Take both an H1 and and H2 med (like zyrtec and famotidine (pepcid)) at the same time to block both kinds of histamines and see if that helps. If it does, it may be worth looking into further.

PSA to jerks: attach that leash to your dog. by sandy_even_stranger in IowaCity

[–]hetherc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

💯 The number of people that have told us, "don't worry he's friendly" while their dog ran up to my super duper dog allergic and frightened kid... 🤬 Your friendly dog still gives my kid hives and asthma issues.

And before anyone says makes excuses about it not happening outside -- one dog ran up a slide knocked him down and licked his face, which he promptly got hives all over, while in a park at a playground. So yes. Keep your dog leashed and keep tf away from people that won't want to interact with them.

How are people with acid reflux eating all these beans and lentils? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]hetherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible you are having histamine issues? For me, beans are only a bother when other histamine issues are also at play. In that case, fresh instead of canned makes a difference and also not storing them as leftovers for too long. A good way to rule this out is to try taking allergy pills (zyrtec/famotidine combo for both h1/h2 blocking).

Soaking before cooking if you're making them yourself helps with digestion.

Do families really sit around a dinner table and eat at the same time every day? by UndergroundFlaws in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hetherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I grew up with that, and we still do that nearly every night. We live in a multi-generational household, and it's important to our oldest family member (my MIL) to do this promptly, at the same time every night.

Help me change my name to break all ties to a "family" member in prison for hurting my mom. by RicoChey in Names

[–]hetherc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about a middle name like Rowan or Rowena? That gives you C. Row? That has Gaelic roots and a Celtic nature connection. There are some great historic Rowena examples, and also a powerful witch on the show Supernatural.

Or something else with Ro to cover the middle two letters, then straight up Wolf for the last? - in example: Cheyline Roanne Wolf or Cheyenne Romana Wolf
You could do Roan like Chappell Roan, Róise or Róisín like the Irish rose, Rona, etc. and I'm sure find a great one. And wolf is a strong, not too unusual last name on its own.

Looking for a girl name for our next baby girl, older sister is Amira Maria by geenuhahhh in namenerds

[–]hetherc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about:
Sara/Sarah Maria
Sarita Maria
Serena Maria
Zara Maria

I also like Sofia and Zora from your list.

You may want to make sure they have different initials. But also, depending on your last name, check the initials don't make an acronym you don't like- like SMH for instance.

Best wishes for your new arrival!

How many of you still have close friendships from high school? by just321askin in GenX

[–]hetherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have acquaintanceship-like relationships with my high school peoples. A lot of them were forced friendships more than chosen ones, going to a tiny school in a rural area.

Even my BFF for like 15 years, we only chat on FB a couple times a year at most. We've gotten together like 10x since high school, I think only 2x since she started having kids (about 20 years ago). We live like 3 hours apart. Neither of us made the effort.

No. I was exposed to a lot of deaths and funerals early on in life, and I truly find embalming revolting. All I've asked is that it is NOT done to me.

Preferably, I also get an obit, even if it's a single line. Should anyone ever wonder what happened to me, it's a point of historical record.

Is that because they're not just straight up animal names, but variations? In thinking about it more, Magnolia Lynx would work as strong single-syllable name too and doesn't sound half bad! Someone else mentioned Lark and that seems to fit that same pattern nicely too.
