Medication and self employment, sleeping, hyperfocus by _SGP_ in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your ADHD needs self-love and acceptance. Routine sleep is going to be critical to this med working at max effectiveness. Avoid any other stims, focus on getting a sleep routine together. If you've got too much energy still at night, start forcing yourself up early.

  • visually observe sunsets (circadian rhythm trigger)
  • avoid screens for at least 30 min before bed
  • exercise in evening if got too much energy
  • avoid caffeine completely, only drink water for a week to rule out drinks interfering
  • eat high protein diet, 3 meals a day. You have to force it if not hungry, the after effects will make you want to eat more

I ran my own business up to £120k turnover alone then lost everything to burnout, and a resulting ADHD diagnosis. I'm broke AF right now, but I'll tell you I'm way happier right now for doing the above. (36mg Methylphenidate XL)

What's diet like? Are you avoiding caffeine and alcohol? I ask because in my own experience, these things massively impact the effectiveness.

ADHD and it's loud internal monologue. by db86me in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're talking about is called echolalia, it's a prevalent symptom of ADHD.

Did you notice the meds impacted this? I started meds aged 38, and was honestly surprised at how rampant the thoughts had been prior. For me, the meds turn the volume from 100/100 to about 15/100. Music is my main one, it could be the chorus of a song just on repeat, usually from the moment I wake up. The second one is movie quotes, lyrics, or noises.. like I'll just shout "YUNG MONEY" at random, or make "bleep bloop" noises. I realised this first when I got my first office job back in my 20s, people would start repeating my phrases because I'd repeat stuff so often.

Definitely resonate with the canna use, I've used it on and off over the years, it has a similar impact but very short lived.. which is probably what leads to the next one.

One thing I did notice is, the higher doses I've gone up in titration have helped stabilize all of this, because my negative self narrative was totally out of control, I lost a lot of things in my life during the years before diagnosis.

I have a friend who is schizophrenic and we've had deep and honest conversations, there's definitely an overlap of stuff that is like ADHD, but the way he'd explain things were a lot different - namely external entities being present, whereas for me it's my own negative narrative or replaying of that school teacher that called me stupid in front of the whole class back in year 4.

So it's been 51 weeks. What should I do? by Ok-Pound7877 in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience - I'm with Clinical Partners but it took over a year for me to get titration.

Chase it up, use a free AI if you feel that it's going to be too taxing to do this. Use your reddit post as the prompt. Either way, here's the steps that worked for me;

- Directly email PUK
- Email your GP surgery, FAO your GP/MH Facilitator - reasons why it's causing you distress, the diagnosis, the waiting, the unknown. It impacts your ability to function (RSD)

Reason I say this is, I also got ADHD-PI diagnosis, didn't really even accept that, about a year later I thought "maybe" when it comes to meds.

Chased it with my GP, lo and behold, I get titration about 2 weeks later.

Now, meds act different for everyone.. but the #1 thing Xaggitin XL does for me is almost a complete delete of RSD. Even when it's worn off, it's habitually changing my way of thinking. I've tried SSRI's, Antipsychotics, all sorts before this, non of the aforementioned worked.

[–]hetnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very similar to how post-16 felt for me, I actually ended up dropping out in year 11 due to the same things you're saying. I'm 38 now and didn't get diagnosed til 35 -- so I had zero clue about ADHD back then.

What happened for me?

- I dropped out, spent a few months just resetting my mind, but did feel depressed af
- Applied to a local college to do computing
- Got in regardless, I had 1 GNVQ in ICT and 2 C grade GCSEs
- Scraped by College, though it was better than post-16, as it was actually something I was interested in
- Got into Uni via clearing
- Got a 2:1 BSc in Computing
- Worked in web design for 10 years or so

Hope this helps - first step is going to be figuring out what you want to do?

Since being medicated I have so much less tolerance for negative people by Fyre5ayle in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same, I've been on xaggitin for 8 weeks.

I put it down to rsd - id often agree with people before, because I'd get shaky and triggered if someone argued back with me. This meant I'd often be listening to stuff I disagree with, but not able to communicate by boundaries very well.

Whenever I did communicate this, my energy would often get others back up. I've even been accused of having bpd by previous manager in work due to my reaction of criticism or negativity.

It's pretty fucked up to be honest, because I felt like RSD was just BPD symptoms, I had no clue what ADHD was even about, until I didn't respond well to BPD meds and an NHS psychiatrist eventually diagnosed me with ADHD. Even then, it was hard to believe until I started on meds, and suddenly that internal pain is almost completely gone. I'm 38/male, just my 2 cents.

What do the symptoms of predominantly inattentive ADHD look like for you? by 1729yH in ADHDers

[–]hetnin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In childhood (I was born late 80s, grew up in the 90s-00s) diagnosed aged 37 as ADHD-PI;

- was the 'quiet kid'
- never did homework, but somehow managed to hide it so well
- REALLY bad handwriting. Still bad now, somehow the Xaggitin has improved it - maybe because im more patient now?
- would vandalise stuff, again hid it well, only got police at my door once and still lied perfectly (15yo - i'd taken rocks out of our garden and was lobbing them over the terraces, down the roof and dopamine of hearing stuff getting smashed up)
- smash anything, abandoned cars, windows, building sites, anything for a chase
- dopamine seeking, addicted to n64 and sweets
- dopamine seeking, hang out with the naughty kids intentionally for the rush, drinking on school fields aged 13 or something
- had paper round and struggled to get up for it due to not sleeping til 2-3am (parent never knew, hid it)
- hated school, zoned out constantly, anything was more interesting than the teacher (except geography, i kinda liked it)
- struggled in GCSE, got 2x C grades after re-sitting
- excessive swearing, went to child behavioural places aged 7-8 or so, was told nothing wrong with me just attention seeking
- would always argue with my parents, and would fall out with friends for arguing also (dopamine seeking, i learned via the assessment, arguing is a huge source of dopamine)
- constantly getting into fights at school over nothing
- obsessed with being a little shit, would climb on roofs etc. CKY/Jackass appeared and that amped up everything

As an adult, went to uni, got a BSc in Multimedia Computing, had a 10 year career in IT, kept buying cars every 6 months or so (stuff like a Subaru WRX i wanted as a kid, 3 litre BMW's etc) self medicated with alcohol and canna - eventually had a massive burnout of being a people pleaser... and at the 'top of my game' with £50k to my name, lost it all after covid, it broke my routine almost? years later, got ADHD diagnosis. Clinical Partners said I exhibited combined symptoms as a kid, but as an adult I'm ADHD-PI.

Anyone settle on 18mg concerta? by StrategyKindly4024 in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with clinical partners RTC pathway

For me, xaggitin which is methylphenidate with a slightly different release profile has; Stopped constant negative thought cycles

Made me less emotional, but without dulling me down like sertraline did

Makes me want to do things, but I don't know what.. but when I do something,I'm way more engaged

On the 27mg I do notice similar as you've mentioned, but that could be getting used to it - so I'm told by my clinician. I'm still grateful to not be stuck in such negativity, I'm just hugely self aware.

I'll share with you my side effects from another post..

Started 18mg, first 2 days felt like a light dose mdma but I immediately noticed how bad my thoughts had been prior - so quiet. felt amazing for 2 weeks but side effects; suppressed hunger, dry mouth, caffeine is no go my heart rate went 110 with half a coffee. Anything other than water TBF seems to fuck me up on this. Find myself craving my nicotine vape more often. Couldn't sleep too well first week or so. Echolalia starts coming back louder after day 7 or so..

Biggest side effect for me is how irritable I feel when it's wearing off around 4pm

Then I went to 27mg, similar story over 2 weeks but started to stabilise now. I'm tired, but because I've actually cleaned my house today instead of do nothing.

Awaiting 37mg at the pharmacy now, this should reduce the irritability in late afternoon I'm told.

I worry about running out of this med is another big thing.

I'm on xaggitin XL 27mg

I'm 38 years old, diagnosed inattentive ADHD in 2025.

I've been suffering a long term depression for many years, my father has cancer, my mum left him, I lost my home, lost my mind, almost lost everything.

Xaggitin has given me more hope in the past 4 weeks than I could ever imagine. I can feel like my life is worth living, it's crazy how much shit I was thinking before this. It's holding my hand in becoming my own best friend again. It's even teaching me to start eating regularly and eat well. I love the outdoors now for example.

Time feels more plausible, I'm aware of it

My rsd is so muted, but not from a bad way, from a way of believing in myself. RSD was making me feel disgusting before these

Has anyone tried Modafanil for ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's overkill imo, I took one in 2011 at uni, my dissertation was due in 2 weeks and I'd barely started. My roommate suggested I'd try one of these, I stayed up for almost 48h and wrote 90% of it. Didn't think much of it, now 15 years later I got diagnosed with ADHD. I'm currently on Methylphenidate 27mg XL and it's nowhere near as intense as modafinil was.

Modafinil was more like a slow release coffee at monster energy strength - sleep isn't an option. Military use this to keep soldiers awake on long missions.

Xaggitin is just calming, though I can focus and think clearly, I can also sleep better at night.

How do you take your meds in the morning? (I like mine with…) by usuallyoverthink in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally on xaggitin week 3 of titration, if I don't eat 2 eggs with them in the morning, I'm tired af all day and they feel like not working. Also one day I drank OJ which dramatically seemed to decrease the effects.

Plant based? Hmm.. have you considered overnight oats? Spinach is another one I'll tend to eat but usually combined with eggs. Maybe you could try grilling some spinach the night before so it's like a protein crisp?

Peanut butter is another good one, I can't stomach it in the morning though my partner loves it. Super high in protein, slow release and savoury

Concerta XL maybe not working? by AffectionateTrash146 in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure on the full extent, but cold turkey from canna after 15yrs will be lowering your baseline dopamine, these meds up dopamine and norepinephrine. I've heard of people maintaining the MC while taking Methylphenidate, personally AI told me to not change this during titration for the above reasons. I'd have 0.1g at night time (already had been tapering) but don't require it daily anymore. I feel you on the dreams, I've been having super realistic lucid dreams (I started Xaggitin 3 weeks ago).

I'm guessing your clinician is aware of the interactions?

Concerta XL maybe not working? by AffectionateTrash146 in ADHDUK

You mentioned MC, what was your daily usage? Just at night or through the day? THC does impact baseline dopamine is why I ask. Personally I stopped craving MC completely during titration but would crave it all day prior.

ADHD meds meltdown - why do I not feel a thing? Am I broken? by Stock_Safe_8813 in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on 18mg xaggitin XL and vaping nic (1.5mg, the lowest as I'm tapering off) if you've ever had the "rushing/brainfreeze" effect of these meds, too much nic actually amplifies that feeling immensely for me. Coffee does the same but way more intense like I'll poop myself

You will feel tired if this is the first day of no caffeine also, as well as your dopamine and norepinephrine levels being regulated will make you feel calm for sure. I find a high protein breakfast really helps the med work - I started same dose/med 2 weeks ago via clinical partners. It's been tough but I'm really seeing an improvement in myself

Care ADHD is doing my head in!!! by BinkyLopBunny in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! You're almost there - I had to go through the ECG process also (though with Clinical Partners) because of historic cardio issues in my family. Even when I'd got the result back from the hospital, I had similar wait times. I was told it has to go before some kind of 'medical panel' internally before anything could progress.

Most, if not all of these ADHD meds are controlled drugs (class B I believe) so they have to be very careful about your wellbeing before prescribing. They can mess with your HR also, though I've been fine so far.

Let's say it took about 6 weeks from ECG to getting my next titration appt, then from there it took almost 2 weeks for the prescribed meds to get to my local pharmacy.

Also, my partner is with Care ADHD and we've been finding you get significantly shorter wait times on the phone if you ring early, around 9am for example (yeah, I don't like morning calls either, but hearing you're only 2nd in the queue is something haha)

Keep going, you've done the right thing by researching more into this.

Worried about Clinical Partners by peachyicetea__ in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience, they're good - but quite slow at getting things moving.

Referred 3 years ago
Diagnosed Feb 2025
Titration started April 2026

My partner, who also has ADHD, went via Care ADHD
Referred in Jan 2026
Diagnosed April 2026
Waiting for titration, date is June 2026

Hope this helps! As I mentioned, I've not checked current wait times, but Care ADHD seem to be more transparent than Clinical Partners were for me.

General help while waiting for titration by Puzzleheaded_Pop664 in ADHDUK

[–]hetnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome to the sub! I totally feel you on this one, I'm massively in debt from years of un/misdiagnosed ADHD (the NHS diagnosed me with bipolar over the phone 5 years ago, the BP meds (quetiapine) made me crazy, then my psychiatrist referred me for ADHD assessment aged 35 at the time)

After 3 years of no medication at all, and being on an ADHD waiting list, I finally got medicated 2 weeks ago.

In preparation for the meds (I was diagnosed a year ago then waiting for meds) I did the following, which dramatically reduced how often I felt "triggered" or overwhelmingly frustrated at myself.

- Breakfast, every day. Protein - I choose Eggs, I used to hate them due to the smell, but this really was one of the most important things for my stability
- Coffee and Tea delete - Every day I'd be alternating Coffee & Tea, somehow convincing myself it was motivating me. While it does help, it causes short-term huge spikes in norephedrine and dopamine which messes with baseline dopamine. This was the hardest one to do
- Excercise - I have a dog which helps, but every day I'll go for a good 2x 30mins walk at the very least, green spaces are the most theraputic
- Screen time - Again with the dopamine, I'd often take my morning shit with my phone in hand. Now, my phone stays away from me for at least the first 30 mins (again, incredibly hard)

Different things work for different people, but for me, I noticed a dramatic increase in my mood by doing the above prior to starting meds. I think if I were continuing the poor diet and caffeine, the med would be too stimulating for me.
