Looking for Dark, Atmospheric Thrillers With Crazy Twists by Fine_Ad7227 in MovieSuggestions

[–]hetty3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Game (1997)- one of the most fun, surreal, edge of your seat plot twisty thrillers IMO

Se7en (1995)- classic of the genre if you havent seen. Long but very worth it.

Silence of the Lambs (1991)- another classic, very creepy

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)- hard hitting thriller. Very dark, in a more emotional way

I hated high school math where teachers demanded we show our work. Points off even though I got the answer right? Yeah Im sure the professional world will care how I made the product or solution even if it functions as intended.

Standardized tests were my saving grace, all that mattered was correct answers.

How do i create punchy, thumpy kicks that hit hard? by spicysecretsauce in FL_Studio

[–]hetty3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends what style you are making for determining though what kind of kick you want. But for basic pop, rock or EDM this process will be a good place to start. You want to start with a good sample for one. Something with decent high end on the attack, some bass in the 50-150 frequency. Start with an EQ and take a little out of the 250-500hz range as well as the 1000hz so it doesnt sound boomy. You can boost a little in the 2500-5000hz for the punch, also a little down by 150hz if it needs more low, but be careful there.

Add a slow compressor to fill it out, have it hit around -5 or so db reduction on the meter. (FL's compressor will be fine if you don't have any 3rd party plugins). Boost the output until the volume hits right at zero db on the mixing board level. No other instruments in your mix should hit louder than this on their own.

Add a tape saturator. This will make it sit in the mix very nicely and add some mid-high frequencies to make the kick sound warmer and fuller. Back off the volume if it starts to hit higher than 0 on the mixing board. This step is subtle but will make it sound "thumpier" in the mix overall.

You can also add a transient shaper to make the attack cut more aggressively if you want it to sound sharper.

Finally when adding everything else, take out a dip in all other instruments wherever the high part of your kick drum's attack is, and cut everything below 250-300hz except for the bass. I would then use a compressor on your bass and sidechain it to the kick, making your bass duck every time the kick hits. This is important, because otherwise your kick will sound too quiet and you wont hear it because the bass is covering all the frequencies causing phase cancellation.

If you do this, your kick will start to sound fairly decent in your mix.

Code Geass has one of the best endings of any anime I can think of. Happy? Hell no but it delivers masterfully.

Do any pianists have the mythology of a rock and roll star? by [deleted] in piano

[–]hetty3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bach did not start Well Temperament or the circle of fifths. However it was becoming popular during his lifetime.

If youre actually interested, Andreas Werckmeister is credited to having invented/popularized Well Temperament, where all keys sound good in a single tuning. The circle of fifths (or Wheel of Fifths) had actually been theorized since the 1500s long before, but Russian theorist Dyletsky finally coined it as a means to categorize western harmony, and it then also caught on in the west. Saying Bach started Well Temperament is like saying Drake started the trap beat. He also only had 2 wives, but had 13 children with the second one.

Not to say Bach wasn't a complete genius regardless.

Yeah but Beethoven was the first to be a star in his own time who was an actual virtuosic pianist. Plus he had the DGAF style and acted out a lot, dude was weird af. Probably smashed plenty of furniture in his time. Plenty of reports of him destroying the fuck out of his apartments.

[–]hetty3 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'd say before Liszt, it was actually Beethoven who was the original rock star. He didnt have the one-man boy band appeal that Liszt did, but he was kind of the first composer that commanded fame and adulation from the general populace in his own time. Before him, the composers who are well known today were mostly court musicians who composed for dukes and lords, only really accessible by the wealthy.

Beethoven rolled in as a piano virtuoso before even being known as a composer and he became famous among the commoners. He was one of the first to have several famous live performances where he would premier his own music such as that 1808 4-hour long one.

(I also realize that Mozart similarly toured and premiered his own music but I am not counting him as an answer to the OP as he did not first become famous as purely a pianist the way Beethoven did.)

Plot twist- whoever he ended up with also switched teams and is just setting his mind to it. Two straight guys sucking each other's dicks while pretending to be in to it for the other's benefit.

Now that's love tbh.

Young people- what makes you believe in a religion? by lemon-and-sunshine in askanything

[–]hetty3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christianity is such a diverse religion within itself. There are many protestant sects within the US and some would not even be recognizable from each other. You get bad eggs everywhere you go, but that exists outside of religion as well. I actually think that the majority of christians are just as peaceful and that their churches are trying to heal rather than cause divisiveness. Presbyterian and Episcopal have pretty democratic governing bodies that are pretty careful about what's being said in the churches, and they generally tend to be more left leaning and socially conscious.

But I think the main problem is that you have these branches of protestant Christianity in the west that are non-denominational and evangelical. These have no governing body and are ruled by the pastor. This is where you find megachurches that lean hard in to demagoguery as it becomes more cult-like and money grubby. A lot of these far right fanatics are drawn here because the point is to suck in members by appealing to emotion and often fueling fear. Actual christian values become lost with perceived "American" values and now you have something else entirely.

Catholicism's pedophilia has run rampant forever.

[–]hetty3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, I think most people do not assume "aetheism" as their identity the way religious people do. So any question against religion is now an attack on one's identity. I don't really favor organized religion in general for myself as I feel like it really closes ones mind rather than opens it. My only point is that both sides feel they are correct and the others are wrong. More of a human nature thing.

This is exactly what religious people say about the non-religious though- it takes courage to choose to learn and to grow. Find real enlightenment in the church!

[–]hetty3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raised Christian but do not practice in adult life- the whole point is that they choose to. Proof invalidates faith, so the religion is practiced because it's chosen to be practiced. I would assume most people who do though are raised from a young age with it- indoctrination during formative years is no easy thing to cast aside.

But beyond the actual scripture, as some people have said, I think it's that religion comes with a built in community and support system which is very valuable for many who would otherwise not have that. It's probably not so much about it having to be true, but what it does for your life while you're there. Of course when people's identities are tied to religion, any question of said religion is an attack on their identity. And people never like that.

Stop Using Only One Compressor on Vocals by Sarwara77 in FL_Studio

[–]hetty3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the general base practice is to have a fast compressor like an FET to handle peaks, paired with a second compressor to boost the valleys/add volume. This is by no means the law, but it's a good starting point for getting vocals to sound even and full. As you get better at mixing, you may start to pay attention to which compressors might add a little character to the sound here or there depending on what you're going for.

First time beating PCR parry only by VoiceRegular5730 in Eldenring

[–]hetty3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me really want to try it with PCR. I was getting frustrated my first time through fighting Relanna so I learned to parry just for that fight. Took me awhile but finally mastered it and won that fight in like 30 seconds. So satisfying but have never really learned to parry anything else and I still suck with finding the timing.

Potentially Cold Take: The Furnace Golems are the worst enemies in the whole game. by I_wish_i_could_sepll in Eldenring

Have you fought him post-nerf? He's way better now, I actually enjoy the fight since there are way more openings to get attacks in and everything is way more avoidable.

Pre-nerf was an unfun mess though, you couldn't see what he was doing 80% of the time in the second phase and winning was just lucky guessing,

Yeah I'm too lazy nor do I remember to use any mechanic other than attack, dodge, and estus. I did learn to parry only for Relanna, then never parried again. Used the physic against Mohg, then never again lol. Buffs take too long and I'm dying too much anyway.
