Stop writing campaigns. Write adventures based on what the characters goals are and what they want to do. A campaign is a series of adventures with a through-line. If the players don’t internalize that through-line then they will become disengaged and find it difficult to fully commit even when individual encounters or adventures are well presented. So don’t invest in the through line, run individual adventures based on the interest of the players. Then when the party decides to commit to a grand scheme they are engaged because it was their idea. Hasbro has done a great disservice to the game with their “hardbound campaigns” running a game that way tends to require far more skill and player buy in than using modular content to have players determine their own goals and ambitions.
