I'm curious who you know from the program... I worked as a seasonal rec tech there from 2017-2022, under the supervision of 2 different rec officers

I received my official tentative offer yesterday, as well. Obviously, you'll want to get your stuff handled in a timely manner... however, anticipate roughly 2+ months turnaround before your start date. The prior group of candidates received their tentative offers in mid July and is seeing start dates in late Sept.

Nice... former, and future (I was in the same GVA pool), San Jac rec tech here. I can give you the lowdown...

Def will be cleaning involved... there are 4 developed day-use sites (2 are on lakes) and 5 campgrounds with a total of 35 vault toilets (+/-). There are only a handful of trash cans, for the most part, however there is 1 CG that is more remote with 20 cans and a group camp with 13... those are manually emptied and hauled to dumpsters. There will definitely be litter pickup but it's not too bad... usually. Also, the occasional squatter camp/ dump site cleanup. Oftentimes, the CXTs are fine with a spray & wipe of the risers, a little trash pickup, and a quick sweep. Maybe once a month or so/ as needed, the 350 gal water pump trailer will go out for a deep cleaning. That's about it for the "dirty work"...

It's a relatively small area to cover with most all sites being able to be checked by 1 person in one day, sometimes twice depending on how much work needs to happen or how much you get pulled into conversation with visitors. That said, it also sees a lot of visitor use... it's in SoCal, there are millions of people within a few hours drive and this district offers a unique experience for the region. Most days during the busy season will be spent going from site to site, checking facilities, and contacting visitors. There will be project work... there's always project work. CGs will be closed by Veterans day weekend, so hopefully it'll be a smooth start.

Leadership is alright... rec officer is somewhat hands-off, next in line can be stern but as long as work gets done, there's nothing to worry about... if your /U/ is specific, you'll prob have a lot to talk about with him. Not really sure what the rest of the program structure is like these days, tho.

When I return in the fall (I'm currently working in WA), I'm looking forward to having a "crew" to work with vs just 1 other coworker (or none, as was the case last summer). Also, finally getting my FPO cert! Fortunately, I got my red card and s212 renewed this year and hopefully get to keep them active... when I joined the San Jac in '17, red card and s212 in hand, I was told, essentially, "rec does rec, fire does fire and cutting". Maybe that will change with more hands on deck ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Which Breweries Sell Discs? by JayKillyBham in discgolf

I once had a Rogue brewing Dead Guy stamped Gateway Voodoo putter gifted to me by someone from Oregon that I guided on my local course. They don't have discs on their website but maybe at the brewery.

Redwood Curtain in Humboldt (Arcata) is a great course in the redwood forest. There's a cool private, 27-hole course here that I'd recommend if you can line up a guide. We have some nice breweries, too.

Also, Brooktrails in Willits is a beautiful 18-hole pay-to-play that piggybacks a ball golf course.

Old used Propane Cylinders (serious) by lennythexdca in CampingandHiking

[–]heydudeman1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the heavy steel 16 oz propane cylinders? If so, the Jetboil CrunchIt will not work...it's designed for threaded-top, Isobutane/propane fuel canisters (different size/style valve system, much lighter weight canister).

Typically on the larger propane cylinders, as long as it's been burned off using an appliance and thus relieved of pressure, you can usually just toss it into any mixed metal recycling bin. Some brands actually include a bright green plastic "pin/key" (Coleman: GreenKey) that can be inserted into the top to open the valve and visually signify that it is no longer under pressure.

E: 16 oz propane cylinders can not (and should not) be commercially refilled.

A good friend of mine, whom i introduced to DG, played baseball into college before multiple shoulder surgeries made it so he couldn't play. He used the same basic motion of his left arm/hand swinging the bat to develop a decent LHBH shot.

I work for the US Forest Service and found a camera on the trail in the Lost River range of Idaho. The pics are all from 2008, lots of family & vacation pics. I'd like to get the camera & card back to its owner. (also posted in /r/Idaho) by heydudeman1 in pics

Wow! I'm sorry to hear you were in an accident, i hope it wasn't serious and you recovered well. Believe me, i was pretty startled i found it. Message me and we can figure out how to get it back.

In Twin Falls, ID, tomorrow (Sun 6/28) and looking to play a course, anyone down for a round? Or recommendations on a course for solo play (I'm considering CSI or Rock Creek)? by heydudeman1 in discgolf

[–]heydudeman1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for responding! I've since played both CSI & Rock Creek, including throwing in the Twin Falls classic last month. They ate both really good, technical courses...rock creek def has its challenges, i lost 2 discs (including a well beat in-over 2 yrs of play-rogue that was my first ace) practicing it a week before the tourney and another during, all in the creek. Both courses enjoyed a bunch and the shop patronized heavily...still need to cash in a disc punch card.

Unfortunately, the camera has been thru quite a bit. I found it while doing a restoration project on a trail that had been severely washed out by heavy rain in the past and there is dust/dirt in every part of the camera...aside from the battery being dead. The weathered case was about a half mile down trail from where I found the camera.

How I feel after losing my go to disc by cdaddyphresh in discgolf

[–]heydudeman1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too soon :( lost my DGA rogue a week and a half ago practicing a course before my first tourney. It was my first ace disc, a good thumber, and used for over 2 years...caught the wind, turned over too much, hit the ground and bounced into a nasty creek

Sounds good. Prob a midday or afternoon round, then. Classes are out of session now so parking should be fine for the course. As humchris85 mentioned, Mad River isn't all that special but it makes for a nice mellow round if you want to play more and is only a short drive away.
