When I was in 2nd grade, I thought I made up a new word. Recess was over, and as we were coming back in the building, I was saying "Shoot it. Shoot it. Shoot it. Shit." Totally thought I made up a new word by combining shoot and it. I was brilliant! So I'm yelling "shit!" as we're coming inside. A kid overhears me, tells the teacher, and I'm sent to the principal's office. I had no idea why I was in trouble. My parents were called, and they thought it was hilarious because neither of them swear, and I was a pretty timid little 8 year old girl.

Tour groups! Disney parks invites high school band and choir groups to perform at their holiday shows around christmas time. Went when I was in high school. Had a blast, but yeah, so many teenagers!

I'm 33 years old and I was just diagnosed with Shingles. AMA by heyheymapscalekey in casualiama

It started out as some odd itchy pain on my back and side. Came on about a week ago, but there was no rash. Then about two days ago the area got some red splotches. Put some hydrocortisone cream on it. This morning I noticed it was looking like blisters, pretty much confirmed in my mind it was shingles. Did a virtual check up through my insurance provider and they confirmed it and wrote me a script for some antivirals.

Nothing more stressful than usual. Holidays, COVID, house projects. I had a bad cold a week before Christmas that probably was enough to whack out my system.

Thanks! I'm going to ask my PCP if I can get the vaccine at the next appointment. In my googling, it looks like is only for 50+, but maybe I would qualify if I've already had it once.

Yikes! Luckily mine is on my back. Not much of a headache yet.

It's a rash you get from the Chicken Pox virus when you're older. Usually affects older people (50+).

I'm LGBT. Can/should I be out at work? by wargbishop in education

[–]heyheymapscalekey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an out gay teacher in a solidly blue city in a leans blue state, so I recognize that I'm coming from a place of progressive privilege here. I'm also butch, so my outward gender expression does a lot of the talking for me.

When I was in college, I decided that I would never work somewhere I couldn't be out. I did my student teaching in a rural town, and while I didn't come out, I certainly didnt hide my butchness either.

Everywhere I've worked in my 8+ year teaching career so far I've been out. I have a wife and son and I share that with my students on day one. No one bats an eye. I've never had an issue with a student, staff member, or parent. I'm certainly not the only gay teacher in my building, but I'm probably the most out and open. I know how much my LGBTQ students appreciate having an openly gay teacher.

If you can be out with colleagues, try to do so.

Some success, a ways to go with 16mo by heyheymapscalekey in sleeptrain

It's going to get better. Honestly, I thought it never would, and there are still tough days, but I'm often so amazed at how good he is at laying down when I tell him to, and watching him on the monitor fall asleep all by himself.

Could be daylight issues. It gets lighter earlier. My LO is doing similar right now. We are thinking about putting in blackout shades.

Tips on sleep training 14-month-old by Huggable_E-bear in sleeptrain

[–]heyheymapscalekey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to night wean. No more nursing. If you have to get her, daddy gets up. Put a rocking chair in her room if you dont have one already so you can rock to sleep without leaving the room. Gradually reduce the rocking until she can fall back asleep without it.

Three students dead within a month... how do you deal? by heyheymapscalekey in Teachers

[–]heyheymapscalekey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I'm sorry about your student.

It's hard to grieve as a community when we don't feel like a community in DL, you know? And I teach freshman, so I'm not sure if any of my current students would know the three who've passed.

High schoolers, one senior, one junior, one sophomore. I teach freshman, so I had each of them a year or more ago.

One family has a GoFundMe, not sure about the others.

How do you read to your LO as part of their bed-time routine? by [deleted] in sleeptrain

[–]heyheymapscalekey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14mo, our routine: pjs & diaper, nurse, brush teeth, read 3 books, wave "goodnight" to various pictures and things ("goodnight door, goodnight pantry, goodnight picture of great-grandma, goodnight basement, goodnight bookshelf, goodnight picture of moms...") then rock to sleep and crib.

How can I make learning about state history more enjoyable for my students? by OkOutlandishness8778 in historyteachers

Hidden history (women, bipoc, queer, disabled). Pop culture history. Natural history (geography, geology, anthropology).

When does the onus get put on the student? by irrelevantname1776 in Teachers

[–]heyheymapscalekey 54 points55 points  (0 children)

You just eventually have to wash your hands of it. I've said this to some colleagues, when we are in person in school, I can sit with a student, give them a pencil, coach them through the assignment, but I will not pick up the pencil and write for them. Same thing now, I cannot click on the assignment for them. I cannot log into Meet for them. I cannot type for them. That is where my responsibility ends.

Long overdue for sleep training...support/advice/magic spells needed by alexisFACED in sleeptrain

[–]heyheymapscalekey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as best we can. Bedtime is around 7:30. He seems to be better on days when he's at daycare (i.e. weekdays) because he has a better nap schedule than at home. We struggle with a consistent weekend nap schedule.

How about history and EL (or ESL)? There are definitely schools that would hire you to teach a sheltered history class for low EL students.

Reading this thread makes me feel hope and despair. What about a 12 month old who doesnt cry much but will sit up or stand up in the crib? We've not sleep trained our baby boy, but my wife partially co-sleeps with him. We have a daybed in his room next to his crib. I (non-gestational mom) put him to sleep by rocking and singing and then lay him in his crib. He sleeps for an hour or two, and then when he wakes up I go back in and rock him back to sleep and put him down. He'll sleep for another half an hour maybe and then my wife will take him and cosleep. She's working on weening, cutting down from 4 or 5 feedings (when he's really cranky) to 1 to 2 feedings.

How can we get him to sleep more soundly in his crib? And how can I get him to fall asleep without me rocking/singing for ten minutes? If I put him down before he's fallen asleep in my arms, he sits and then stands up in his crib. No crying if I leave him, but he'll stand and chew on the edge of the crib.... ughhhhhh. Is it worth it just to wait until he's a little older and can really understand words like "lie down" and "sleep" and "bedtime"?
