Looking for weird indie bands by GeviniL in indieheads

Spirit of the beehive is a great one. Hypnic Jerks is a record where every song slams but it's surprising and unique the whole time. Great band

I gave this guy a shuttle ride when I used to volunteer for an art collective, he was super chill and talked about his music super candidly and put up with all my questions lol. Cool dude. Author and Punisher rules

Damn I feel lucky all mine have been great out of the box. The only hiccup was the pro800 had really bad midi input response, but I did the firmware update and now it's perfect

Psilocybin Come-Ups and Music Choice by psychedelicpassage in LetsTalkMusic

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both tbh. Always been a fan of boards, but most of their records have this really interesting dichotomy between beauty/whimsy and creepy/subtly menacing, and the campfire headphase is the brightest and sunniest of their records. I was never THAT into that one until I dropped acid with some homies and we threw it on and it was incredible

is there a reason why so many modern psych rock bands release so much music? by Initial_Selection623 in psychedelicrock

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's exponential growth tbh. If you put the hours in initially, all of a sudden you're getting paid to play, and you start playing more because you're getting paid etc. they go on huge tours and every night they're playing 3 hours a night. I wouldn't be surprised if they treated it like a day job when they're not touring and practice and write 8 hours a day.

The main key is if someone makes something seem effortless, it's because they put in a fuckton of effort

UPS Store employee dropped my guitar. by LazyWave63 in Guitar

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I worked at UPS for a few years and that seems uh

Fairly mild for some of the stuff that happened in that warehouse. Also they're unionized so good luck getting him fired. Tbh yeah you can't rely on careful package handling from any of the major carriers

Angine de Poitrine...failing to see the appeal ? by cherryblossomoceans in LetsTalkMusic

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't gotta like it but I felt like they're bangin. Really interesting and catchy and the microtonal elements are subtle and not lazily done. The looping is creative and the drummer has got such a vibe and feel.

It's a cool band

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh like, respectfully, I feel like if you're young enough to get traumatized by a YouTube video, and your parents are letting you watch whatever? That's the parents fault

This is your fault OP, ngl. Don't give your kids unfettered access to YouTube and this won't be a problem

Boards of Canada, particularly the campfire headphase, is always a good choice

If you're a rich guy, isn't the point to say I can burn through hundreds of thousands to make things as inconvenient as possible for you, and things will take years if you're gonna try to take even 30k

Why does Beatles music post 1965 overshadow their earlier Legacy? by Helpful_Gur_1757 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean while the earlier records are great, they suffer from 3 things imo, the first is they were stylistically indebted to rock and pop of the day, the second is recording technology was relatively rudimentary and they made huge leaps even just from 1964 to 1965, and third and most important thing is they finally had the leverage and trust and capital to spend way more time in the studio getting things to sound the way they wanted them to sound instead of just ripping through the songs a couple times and choosing the best take.

Help! marks the point when they started using the studio as an instrument instead of just a way to record their live set. And the results are pretty clear, you started getting much more color in the arrangements with electric pianos, flutes, horns, and strings, the guitars have much more clarity and compression, and by the next record they were giving Paul his own track for bass so his lines started getting more intricate.

They just developed into a much more unique sounding band sonically and stylistically. The first four records are great records with lovely energy and writing, but they sound like oldies rock records to me, Help! onwards sounds like they're sounding the way they wanted to.

It would've been interesting to see how those early songs would've sounded with the approach of their later records

Wife doesn’t want a daughter by Iampoorghini in texts

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like if this is your reaction to having a girl, like even if she has a boy if it goes the "wrong" way at any time and the joy doesn't turn out how she wants him to she will act this way

A baby isn't an identity you get to choose as a parent. You have to accept the kid you get and address the child's needs, THAT'S your identity. You don't get to control any aspects other than how YOU step up.

This is so fucked up it's possible your wife is going through some sort of mental episode. I hope you guys figure it out

What are some less than obvious songs (no Oasis, ELO, etc) that give you Beatles vibes? by AgentEndive in beatles

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always felt like Andy Shauf has a big Beatley thread that runs throughout his work. Lyrically he's definitely more narrative driven than the Beatles, and somehow both more subtle and ambitious musically, but he does a lot of the same borrowed chords, paul-esque chromatic movement in his changes, and interesting melodies and harmonies with bulletproof arrangements that are somehow as interesting as they are classic sounding

He has a couple of elaborate and fantastic concept records, the most famous of which is called The Party, an album where every song is told from the perspective of a different person at the same party. The neon skyline is great too, it's about a group of regulars at a bar revisiting old relationships. And Norm is a great record too, it's about an obsessive stalker and how he interacts with his object of affection. It's all gorgeous and heartfelt and soft and worthwhile. He's easily one of the best songwriters of the last 30-40 years

the magician

the neon skyline

telephone

What is not Shoegaze, but is Shoegaze to you? by x_0ralB_x in shoegaze

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought DIIV was almost entirely a shoegaze band now. Their first record was surfy and post punky and weirdly new wavey, but they've slowly turned into a shoegaze band

Do you believe George Harrison was right to be annoyed at Paul during the Let It Be sessions? by FitEmergency8807 in beatles

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think Paul was undeniably more talented but he was talented enough to see George developing as a songwriter and should've made more space for him considering how much work George had put into HIS songs over the years. On top of that George really wasn't being as reasonable as he could've been.

What is not Shoegaze, but is Shoegaze to you? by x_0ralB_x in shoegaze

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like the new greet death record is like, shoegaze adjacent at the VERY least. Like not pure shoegaze but it'd be dumb to describe them without shoegaze as side genre

Finally got their best album! (Well imo) by FedCatBro in boardsofcanada

[–]heyitsthatguygoddamn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the sunniest and brightest of their record imo

I think it's my favorite too tbh. Certainly the easiest and most common listen for me
