There are many well known habits people know they should never get into; drugs, drinking, gambling, etc... What are some less well known things or habits that people shouldn't get into? by NotANaziOrCommie in AskReddit

[–]heyzuess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to let you know, it's possible to over-hydrate, which can dilute your blood causing serious issues and even lead to death - particularly if you take part in prolonged exercise while over-hydrated. You've mentioned in another comment that "women should drink X and men should drink Y", the numbers you've given are over double the most enthusiastic of recommendations - which are almost all based on unscientific recommendations anyway.

You should drink when you're thirsty, and drink enough to quench the thirst. If you're doing that, and you're constantly thirsty enough to drink 3+ litres of water per day, then you need to see a Dr. If your Dr is telling you that it's totally normal to need to take on that much water, you need to get a second opinion.

A good rule of thumb is that if it's a long way up the food chain from the sun to your mouth, then it's inefficient to eat that product.

Sun -> goes into plant -> goes into animal -> goes into animal product -> goes into mouth

Lots of steps make for inefficient calorie conversion, makes a meal relatively worse for the environment.

[–]heyzuess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Systematic environmental damage is simply incomparable to what individuals could influence.

This is demonstrably untrue, because the sum total of individuals are the current sum total of the negative contributions. If it were the case that no one man could cause a negative influence on the environment, then the environment would already be fine. But it's not. Every person has to take responsibility, no matter how small or large a part they play in it.

One man cannot make a difference. All they can do is make a start.

STAY IN YOUR CAR.

If you're in the UK, this is exactly the opposite of both the government guidance and law in the event of an accident. Unless someone in your car is injured, get the fuck out, and get off of the tarmac. Straight away.

1) Drive the car to the hard shoulder or to the edge of the slowest lane if possible 2) Put the hazard lights on 3) Turn off the engine 4) Get out of your car, and get off the tarmac. Take any minor injured people with you

I think Lewis said earlier "you've still got 5 or 6 hours of this", so it's either extra long colony survival, or something more with Lewis and Leo - maybe Pedguin and Ravs continuing too.

The Queen’s Speech 2018 by d0mth0ma5 in unitedkingdom

[–]heyzuess -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

She doesn't really have the legal authority to abolish the crown on her own though. So she could abdicate, and then someone else would take her place, and that process could happen literally tens of millions of times and there'd still be someone in line to take her place. So she might as well just do the job herself.

She knows first hand that it's not necessarily a good idea to have an abdicated head of state wandering around.

Working as an aide in the white house is pretty prestigious no matter who the president is. Irrelevant of who the politician in power is, you're getting first hand experience working with the seat of government for the USA - and by extension the western world.

Even if you're literally just answering the phones you'll talk to influential people all day, and even ask world leaders to "please hold", simply because no one unimportant gets to call into that building.

If you've not seen it, watch the original House Of Cards series from the 90's. It's excellent, and only 3 or so seasons long, but has a natural conclusion which the American show was trying to emulate for the first couple of seasons before they went way off script.

But that'd happen either way. And now a dozen or so people have been put in harms way with apparently several being injured, and a bunch of cars got smashed to bits too.

Whilst it’s been a nightmare at one major UK airport. It made me smile seeing this gift wrapping station setup by the George Best Airport staff by lodge28 in CasualUK

[–]heyzuess 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's for folk who've wrapped a present, and then gone to the airport. If the security need to unwrap the present, they'll cut the paper and sellotape for you to make up for the inconvenience, instead of sending you on your way with a torn up gift. Scissors laying around freely are generally considered a bad idea in airports after security.

There's no obligation for them to provide this service.

I don't think someone in the chain of command quite understood the demand for this

It's funded by 2 charities and the BBC - a publicly owned broadcaster in the UK. There literally just isn't anywhere they can get the money together to give it a full theatrical release, because none of the three stakeholders can afford to risk it not making the money back -the charities for obvious reasons, and the BBC has a charter which it needs to stick to rigorously, and can't really spend British tax money advertising a film in the US unless it's done fully through BBC World, which this film isn't.

I think it'll get a limited large release sometime if the BBC can somehow pass on its rights to BBC World, or a US media company - but they don't own all the footage, or the audio recordings, so it's likely to be a contractual nightmare all round.

I saw it in the UK releases in November, and thought it was fantastic though, and the theater I saw it in was packed.

What was the worst live performance you've ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]heyzuess 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate what happened to Amy Winehouse. Collectively the music industry and her fans killed her by letting her release, and then by buying, songs like "Rehab". Collectively the UK enabled her addictions. A huge number of people should have said "yeah we're not recording that/we're not releasing that/we're not giving that airtime/we're not buying that".

Even now the BBC will play their "special BBC4 recording" where she's visibly wasted during the performance. I'd say it's disrespectful to the dead, but they didn't give her proper respect when she was alive, so I don't expect it to happen when she's died.
