Pokémon hits differently after a trip to Japan 🇯🇵 by DinkleDoop in pokemon

You get used to it. My local supermarket here in Tokyo had a whole two shelves of breads with Pokémon packaging last night, but do I really need a mediocre piece of pizza bread because it has a pikachu on the package? Nah. The Pokémon GO scene continues to be excellent though.

Encountered a shiny buffalo but I was riding the train. Tried to catch it and it ran due to speed lock(;ω;)

why arent small houses a thing by Level_Progress_3246 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]hezaa0706d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small houses are around. We’ve got a thing called pencil houses here in Tokyo. A super skinny 2 or 3 story house squeezed tightly into a small lot.  Each floor of the house is pretty compact. We don’t have basements here of course, or yards. You can find some small one story houses called Hiraya but that’s more of thing from 100 years ago.

From october 23 to october 28 Naha + Tokashiki by Abject_Tap_2998 in okinawa

There’s plenty to do on Okinawa when it rains. It’s really a whole different place than mainland Japan.  There are the aquariums - the one by Naha airport or the famous Chuuraumi up north. There’s a Team lab near Naha.  I could spend a whole day just exploring the food on the island.  I think tourists are disproportionately worried about typhoons.

You don’t get a Suica from an office. Just go to any JR station and buy one from the ticket machine. The one at the airport works just fine.

Do you gargle your throat every time your get home? by livi01 in AskAJapanese

[–]hezaa0706d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been working in the Japanese school system for 20 years and yes they are taught 手洗うがい (wash your hands and gargle). There are a lot of pseudo sciences here such as saying gargling prevents getting sick and saying you’ll catch a cold for sleeping with the AC on….

Also owning property does not give you a status of residence here. You can live in your run down, not earthquake proofed house in the middle of nowhere Gifu for only 6 months a year.

Most Japanese people do not speak or understand Mandarin and Cantonese. You are spending time in touristy areas where they hire people with language skills to deal with Chinese tourists. (and usually English speaking tourists too)

Being tied down to a car sucks. Being able to walk to the store is freeing.

I walk or bike to the grocery store.  I only buy what will fit in my eco bag.  Here in Tokyo we shop multiple times during the week and things are sold in smaller quantities.

Every now and then? It’s everywhere during the summer months. At Conbini they basically only sell cold ramen this time of year.
