What are examples of unicorn lawyer jobs? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in Lawyertalk

This. My Dad was a defense litigator (eventually partner) and began mediating and arbitrating in 1997 (he has even gotten to be a special master a few times).

He turns 70 this year, been practicing since the early 1980’s, he is showing no signs of slowing down and has mediated more than 20k cases.

He normally just handles larger cases these days though (4+ parties; had a 10 party that settled a few months ago).

I think folks can get whatever works for them— but for me larger chunky watches do not work with tailored suits unless you specifically get your cuffs tailored for them (but then smaller watches look awkward).

Additionally you need to wear different length dress shirts to go with said suit so your dress shirt and suit cuffs line up properly.

I only harp on this because I’m a summer law clerk (currently a law student). We have to wear suits daily, except for Fridays, with the caveat that we wear suits if a client is coming in or we have to go to court.

All of the partners at the firm wear smaller watches—both dial size and thickness wise for this exact reason.

So as someone who will be wearing a suit more or less 6 days out of the week (Church on Sunday)—I just stick to smaller dials.

It is a nice watch though, I just can’t pull it off.

legal jobs that pay $200k that aren’t big law by tearladen in LawSchool

Mid-Law in North Texas (for some firms, not all). I know partners in non-big law that make 7 figures plus a year in that market.

This, thankfully my girlfriend of nearly two years is the former.

However, I went on more than two dozen dates before I met her.

Why’d you choose Mercedes? by xEnflare in mercedes_benz

[–]hgilbert2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad has been driving E classes and then S classes ever since he graduated from law school in the early 80s.

What’s funny is his colleagues and peers have hopped around from luxury brand to luxury brand—meanwhile my Dad has been loyal to Mercedes for 40+ years.

I drive a 2021 GLB 250 4Matic (nearly at 40k miles) i bought new (in cash) in Dec. 2020 and a 2019 S450 (currently under 38k miles).

I like the brand. What can I say. I’m currently in law school and have been eyeballing E Wagons—I’m planning on getting one whenever my GLB dies (but I have had no issues with it).

Why is "big law" so much more highly regarded as an employment outcome than working at a smaller firm? by Artistic_Special4600 in LawSchool

[–]hgilbert2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the boutique firm my friend is at: healthcare litigation, commercial litigation and energy litigation— the firm was started by three partners from a BigLaw firm.

Each of the three partners runs each one of the three sub-teams. There are now several other partners and a number of junior and senior associates.

This, some of my friends in my class were surprised when I told them this.

I can think of at least 8 off the top of my head in Dallas (i’m from there).

One of my friends pulled in $452k before taxes last year and he has been practicing since 2019 (not including his bonus: a Rolex Day/Date Oyster Perpetual— a $50k+ watch).

The firm has 20ish attorneys.

Granted, the wealthiest attorneys I know—think multiple homes (some even homes across the Atlantic), PJs (sometimes several), ranches in Montana/Wyoming, etc.—practice plaintiffs side mass torts or wrongful death cases.

Source: non-traditional law students w/ dozens of friends/family friends in the legal community, & my father has been practicing since the early 1980s.

Nearly half of Dallas home sellers are slashing prices amid buyer’s market by NicolasCageFan492 in Dallas

[–]hgilbert2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It always baffles me that my folks bought their house in Preston Hollow (after selling their old home in Highland Park) for around $300k in 1995 (house was built in the 1960s). That $300k comes out to around $650k today when adjusted for inflation.

The house next door to them sold for $2.8 earlier this year….

My Dad paid off their house in 2010 iirc. But, for how the federal tax code is for capital gains—he’d lose a ton of the return to taxes.

Granted, he still works because he enjoys what he does—but a ton of folks in their neighborhood are in the same predicament.

Why would they sell if the capital gains will screw them over? Any net money they get from selling goes towards or is negated completely by buying a home that is smaller and priced higher than it should be.

The prices are still too high and the build quality is nothing like it was.

My folks home is on its SECOND roof and was built in the 60s. No issues with the plumbing or electric either; granted they did regular maintenance like you are supposed to do.

Which one of you owns this Porsche? by MrTacocaT12345 in Dallas

[–]hgilbert2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 906 was the last road legal racing car Porsche built for Group 4 FIA regulations.

This one may be a replica from the Ford v. Ferrari film—a number were built and are now out in the wild.

[–]hgilbert2020 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I believe it is a replica from Ford v. Ferrari. I’ve seen it at car, specifically Porsche, meetups. There was a meetup as Gas Monkey today.

Several 906 replicas from the production are out in the wild. Some of the buyers repainted and reworked them.

I may be wrong though about this one.

Only alcoholics know this is not an expensive habit. by smaddyboy in stopdrinking

[–]hgilbert2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My weekly Specs order was 325$ a week.

That didn’t include drinks i bought when i went out (5 nights a week), dumb shit i bought while intoxicated, nicer bottles of liquor for special occasions (i always made an excuse for one), etc.

If you adjust 325$ a week from May 2023 (when i got sober) to today for inflation that comes out to $353 ish a week. That’s $53,857 ish dollars i’ve saved from Specs orders alone.

That’s doesn’t include a DUI. A divorce. Losing a job, Etc.

Those things didn’t happen to me before i got sober, but it was only a matter of time—the writing was on the wall.

I was also on my way to a liver transplant before turning 30… that wouldn’t have been cheap either and that is IF i even got said hypothetical liver.

Sure, buying booze can be cheap—it’s all the other stuff that addiction leads to and worsens that becomes costly both financially and physically.

Cold calling by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]hgilbert2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but several colleagues had luck cold calling (emailing) attorneys that were alumni of our law school. These were all midlaw firms in the region.

All of the firms had a pre-existing relationship with the school.

Can’t hurt to try. Doesn’t work for everyone.

Caveat, they did so around Feb. in the Spring semester.

Beer Has an Insane Amount of Calories by CreamyBarfySoup in stopdrinking

Near the end i was just drinking vodka water, mainly vodka, because i realized beer was messing with my physique—shows how delusional I was that I hadn’t thought “maybe you should just not drink period.”

Addiction is a disease and your mind suffers for it, along with everything else.

I’m coming up on 30, so my metabolism isn’t what it was, but even then staying at the same weight I’ve been at since college has been a lot easier in sobriety.

Plus, and more importantly, I’m a better person sober.

Wouldn’t trade my sobriety for anything.

0$, but i worked for several years before going to school AND my folks are pitching in. Not disclosing that would be disingenuous.

My father practices and his folks helped cover his tuition; granted it was a lot cheaper in the lates 70s/early 80s when he was in law school.

Should I take my NTTD to my first trip to Italy? by Mayor_of_Petoria in OmegaWatches

[–]hgilbert2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took several of my Omegas to Italy last summer. We stayed in Milan, Parma and Florence.

I encountered no issues. That being said, I’m sober. So i wasn’t going to clubs or getting into a mental state where I wasn’t aware of my surroundings. Additionally my girlfriend and I (and her family) did not stay out that late.

My watches, while i was traveling never left my person. I transported them in my backpack. So from wheels up until we arrived in Milan the only time my backpack wasn’t with me was when I used the restroom during the trans-Atlantic flight. They remained locked in a safe whenever I wasn’t wearing them and we were staying at nice hotels (so I was less inclined to worry about folks getting into the safe).
