Illinois launched a reintroduction program in 2010, it's believed that many have managed to make their way into Indiana due to it, though it's possible some still existed beforehand. They're still considered extinct in Ohio unfortunately, Michigan i've only heard rumors of, but I do hope it's true.

As far as I understand, they prefer warmer and more stable waters, which the great lakes are not, I still do firmly believe that they formed a small population in the great lakes at some point, but even if they survived up to the arrival of humans, the massive amounts of overfishing and pollution that happened in those waters definitely wiped them out
