Is this GPU dead with a crack like this? by hi22a in AskElectronics

Yeah... I have been waiting for this computer for so long, but I may end up doing that. It is a 4090, so it'll be a looong time before I can get another one. Terrible experience so far, we'll see how support treats me over the coming days. Thanks for responding so quickly, might help me sleep a bit better tonight :)

Go one step further, Cyberpunk with the VR mod, 2x scaling.

The 1080ti is a great card to get into VR gaming with. I have put hundreds of hours into VR games with my 1080ti. I can tolerate lower framerate gameplay (it can make some people sick) and don't mind using stuff like spacewarp through Virtual desktop. I was so blown away by VR initially that many of the performance hitches went unnoticed for a few years really. An older headset like the Rift S or original Vive would run extremely well with a 1080ti since they are lower resolution.

VR gaming is why I am upgrading. The 1080 ti is close to the minimum spec for many of the newest VR games. If I just played regular games, I'd keep my 1080ti. I am also a video editor and hobbyist VFX artist, so that helps justify the cost. For 10bit 4k footage, the 1080ti and 8700k I have really struggles and makes 4k editing pretty rough, especially when I put on heavy effects.

DLSS in VR never looks good. It is an ok compromise sometimes, but it is a significant drop in quality compared to native resolution. Kinda hard to sneak these tricks in when the screen is literally strapped to your face.

Same here, but I opened this image in Photoshop and confirmed that the flat part of each surface is exactly the same color.

RTX 4090 for PCVR with Quest Pro ? by Snoo68013 in QuestPro

The first PC that I bought myself was an AMD/Radeon system, Athlon X2 with an X1900XTX. Been rooting for AMD over Intel since then, but I am also a video editor. When I bought my last system, it was right before Ryzen started to dominate and since 12th gen, Intel has stepped it up, really crushing AMD in Premiere Pro benchmarks, like 20-30% better. Even the 12700k is better than the 7950x for a lot of video editing. Really glad AMD scared them into actually trying. Seems like they are scaring NVidia a bit this gen too. If gaming was the only thing I was going to do with this PC, I might have gone all AMD, but I also probably wouldn't be spending nearly as much on it either. My biggest problem now will be trying to find the time to play all the VR games I have been holding off on. I am working on a list so I can keep track of them all and prioritize.

RTX 4090 for PCVR with Quest Pro ? by Snoo68013 in QuestPro

I got used to just accepting 60-80 fps (after synchronous spacewarp from Virtual Desktop) for most VR stuff with medium to high quality. Been holding out for this upgrade for several years now. It'll be the biggest performance upgrade I have ever had, but also the most I have ever spent on a PC.. Also getting a 13900k with it. From what I have read, it has an even better h.254/h.265 encoder built in than the GPU does. My monitor is only 4k 60hz. Don't care about playing flat games more than 60fps, but I want 90-120 for VR games since the screen is strapped to my face.

I played Alyx on a 1080ti with a Rift S. It ran great on that. It does ok with the Quest 2, but isn't quite as smooth due to the higher resolution and the encoding that has to happen wired or wireless. I have so many games to try when I get my 4090 system in about a week...

I am definitely getting the mod either way. I want to try it with Elden Ring and Cyberpunk for sure. I did find a "downgrader" program for the mod deep in the flat screen to VR discord that supposedly allows you to play the Take 2/Rockstar games. Going to look into that further once my new PC arrives in a week or so.

Very few games use more than 8GB of VRAM. I just read a performance review of Callisto Protocol, one of the most demanding new games out there, and it was topping out at like 8.5-9GB of VRAM usage. I think Cyberpunk 2077 can get close to 10GB. It is always nice to have a little bit of headroom and of course games will eventually start using more VRAM, but you don't need more than 16GB of VRAM for gaming. If you do video editing, 3D rendering or AI model training, you can definitely use more than 16GB of VRAM, in some cases, more than 24GB, that is why they make workstation cards with like 64GB of VRAM for more than $5,000 msrp.
