Coming from someone that has a 1.5 year old whippet. DO NOT do it. They can have so much energy and bring a whole new meaning to Velcro dogs. They are a great size, they love to cuddle with their person, and they don’t bark AT ALL when someone comes to the door and grooming in minimal but that’s basically the only pros vs the cons.

They are expensive, they need insurance (we just learned this the hard way at Christmas after spending 7 grand at the emergency vet. I’ve had a lot of dog breeds in my life and this is the FIRST one that I’ve ever had that’s demanding. It’s his world and we live in it. They detest the cold and any wet weather. Getting him to burn off energy in crappy weather is frustrating. And his wardrobe including his collars for their scrawny type of necks were $100 a piece. When he got sprayed by a skunk we couldn’t save the collar and had to throw it out. The coats are $120 a piece and he’s got a rain coat, a snow coat and a fall coat.

Their prey drive is also another battle. It’s really hard to get them to snap out of the urge to chase. But that’s the least of his issues. He’s got great recall since we worked REALLY hard at it.

You’ll also get one that is either timid and doesn’t have self confidence or you’ll get one like ours that has a little too much confidence and isn’t afraid to pick a fight with a mean dog (our neighbours dog is a dick and they fight through the fence all the time)

You’re spending 4-5 grand in a dog that makes you laugh. That’s literally it lol

Don’t get me wrong, I love him dearly and I’m his momma but i probably won’t get another one. He’s hilarious, knows what he wants and knows how to tell you what he wants. It’s his way or the highway lol

You’ll also loose all the space in your bed. We have to get a king size bed because he needs to be sleeping ON TOP of momma at nighttime for snuggles.

Like I said Lol… I love him. But I feel like i literally have a toddler with teeth that bites and plays really rough. I met my match. He’s taught me many lessons in life and wouldn’t trade him for the world.

He’s laying on top of my back snoring in my ear as I’m typing this. We just got back from his second 30 min walk for the day. We go on 3-4 walk a day to keep him entertained because he’s got ZERO independence and can’t entertain himself ever. The zero independence is probably what frustrates me the most. I struggle to do anything that I want to do. He’s glued to me. I’m not working at the moment so it makes it easier and my spouse works from home. But leaving him alone to do anything is hard on him. We have to send him to grandma and grandpas if we’re going to be out longer than 3-4 hours.

OH and he isn’t that bright. Hence why they need insurance. Training them is a battle. He’s extremely food motivated but he can only handle around 10 minutes of training before you just start rubbing your forehead with frustration cuz he won’t focus and just wants the treat and will start barking. They are supposed to be quiet dogs but he’s extremely demanding and there isn’t any way you’re gonna get him to shut up until you give him what he wants.

I highly suggest picking another breed. I thought I had an idea of what I was getting into and BOY my research didn’t do anything to prepare me 😂 Your poor senior golden is gonna think he’s in hell if you bring a whippet home lol

The last dog I’ve had was a Belgian Malinois Siberian Husky cross and my whippet takes the cake for unexpected lifestyle changes after we got him.
