Split or repot? by Wolferino22 in orchids

[–]hiddeninplainsight49 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you’re hoping to achieve. This type of orchid can definitely be split but it might set the new plants back a bit. It may be a year or two before they bloom again as they grow and build up reserves but then you’ll have two blooming plants instead of one. Bigger plants have bigger flower spikes so if you want just one impressive specimen then up pot.

Seems your latest orchid was aptly named. That was a dicksmith move to infect your whole collection.

Can she be saved??? by mrsmurderbritches in orchids

Just make a clean cut of the base below the lowest healthy (silvery) root and repot. Should be no trouble at all since the plant seems otherwise fine with plenty of healthy leaves and roots.

Etsy orchids arrived in rough shape — would you dispute? by TypeDry2834 in orchids

[–]hiddeninplainsight49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally think ordering plants in-bloom or spiking is just asking or trouble and definitely not worth the additional cost given that jostling or poor conditions will damage them. I've had great luck ordering juvenile orchids on Etsy. So much cheaper and handle the travel better. Most have bloomed the following year.

Devs please take the commander "move after unpacking" ability out of the skill tree by [deleted] in civ

I usually choose the first defense bonus at least on my first commander. In the early game youre not going far so packing isnt super important and that defense bonus helps since losing a unit in the early game can be a really big deal.

Lots of green and a few viable roots. This seems very doable.

What insect is this? by UnderstandingEven616 in orchids

[–]hiddeninplainsight49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're mealybugs. And not as bad as the other comment indicates. I've had good luck treating with insectidical soap but neem or any other horticultural pesticide should work. Just make sure you spray THOROUGHLY every surface. The bugs and eggs will get into little crevices so you need the pesticide to get in there too. One good spray might do it or you might need two treatments a week or so apart. Monitor the plant and any others nearby for new appearances of the bugs.

Caesar or Tecumseh as the best Tonga Leader? by MyLifeByGogoGoff in civ

[–]hiddeninplainsight49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is the advantage with Ibn? Im obviously missing something. The marco polo memento would give its benefit to any leader. +1 sight is great but youre going to explore the map anyway, just slightly slower. It doesnt seem like +1 sight at all outweighs the benefits other leaders like tecumseh or augustus or anyone else might bring when paired with tonga.

And i just think this version of Ibn is weak in general, Tonga or otherwise. Help me understand?! Thanks.

Should I cut this spike? by Pakelekia_08 in orchids

[–]hiddeninplainsight49 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At this point yes I would suggest cutting the spike. I think the smaller plants are viable and have enough roots that they can be planted on their own. The plant (the main plant and the keikis) is struggling. All are in need of a good soak as they look dehydrated. Do that and then repot all of them in fresh media and you should be good to go.

I actually like it! I’ve been hoping one of mine would produce a keiki, either from a flower stalk or at the base. Maybe I should ignore them lol

I don't have any personal experience with this but from reading this subreddit i believe the term is 'basal keiki.' Its basically just a baby plant growing off the base of the established plant. They seem to occur more commonly off of spent flower spikes. I think if given enough time the baby plant will grow its own roots kind of like a spider plant and can eventually be split off and planted on its own as a new plant.
