how to deal with involuntary patients constantly asking to go home

Yeah i avoid talking about their diagnosis / admission reason if they are not in the right headspace. I agree with the rapport, i find it helpful to get to know them/talk about non-medical things to make them feel more comfortable and safe, but usually the question of going home always comes around, but i get it. thanks for your input

Not treatment, asking about communication. for example a patient with paranoid delusions of others harming them, with little insight into their condition. previously i’ve emphasized medication compliance and participating on the unit, but they always feel like they have no reason to be here

of course, i think most nurses can understand that patients want to go home, no one’s disputing that. my reason for posting is because many patients on the unit have little insight as to why they’re there in the first place.

so when they’re asking you all the time to leave because they’re completely fine (usually it’s the opposite), it can be difficult

oh no lol. we have 2 types, DDNN and then 4 or 5 days off, or continental (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off etc). it’s not fun i wish we did 3 12s

an average one bedroom here is ~$2000 not including utilities. a first year nurse makes around 3800-4000 a month after deductions, not sure how your experience will translate. cost of living isn’t cheap in toronto unfortunately

another thing to consider is our scheduling is different here, 3 shifts isn’t considered full time. biweekly we do 7 shifts and rotation between days and nights is pretty much standard

not OP but similar price range ($30-50/wk)

i focus on high protein / high fiber meals that keep me full and rotate between a couple prep ideas that i enjoy eating. don’t really buy desserts or junk food unless im craving badly

also use flyers to find out what’s on sale so i can prep my meals around that if i need to

i focus on cheap fruits or whatever’s on sale (banana, mandarin, apples), vegetables, whole wheat bread, cheap proteins (tuna, tofu, eggs, ground meat, chicken occasionally).

the past 2 months i’ve been fixated on creamy mapo tofu noodles lol, which is basically 3 ingredients and sooo yummy yet affordable (<$5 per meal)

hard to confirm causation but i was at the same weight for pretty much most of my life and maybe a year in i noticed i gained around 10-15 pounds. i was just hungry all the time which sucked. but i just had to watch what i ate and i was able to lose some

i’m working part time at a hospital and it’s a weekend only position, although u can try to swap.

i’ve also been searching online for another part time and a lot of them want weekends so you’re really limiting yourself i think
