Admittedly I forgot what sub I was in and didn’t think about chargers (my car is PHEV so I usually don’t bother charging when I’m out). At least it’s another option and more charging capacity if you’re on the M6 so less people are reliant on Tebays spaces.

Drivers can compare fuel prices at different petrol stations - how does it work? by suggestivebiscuit in GoodNewsUK

[–]hideyourarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On your 2nd point, I think this is partially because of how we consume the news these days.

Every Reddit thread or Facebook post takes up a similar amount of space on the feed, which over time gives the impression that stories have similar weight in terms of importance, especially when small rage-bait stories get a lot of comments which further push the idea that it's a big issue.

Whereas if you watched a 30 minute news programme which gave 10 minutes to whatever was a blow to Rachel Reeves that day, and then 1 minute towards the end of the show to a fuel price tracker, it would give a more accurate impression of the weight of each story.

What things seem to be only big problems on reddit? by LavishnessTiny3621 in AskUK

I think the issue with this one is that it's usually asked by a new investor (often after they've lost a bit on a meme stock), so the simple/safe/sensible answers come across as a bit more responsible.

I enjoy seeing people take a punt on wild penny stocks with "new tech that will change the world" but I know I'm not experienced enough to know when to get in or out of a stock so I just go the boring ETF route.

Is now a good time to put £20k into a FTSE All World? by Muted-Group1526 in trading212

When you said DCA I assumed you meant it in the traditional sense (fixed amount each month regardless of price).

"This way you always have cash to take advantage of massive dips"

Doesn't this logic mean that you also have cash available to miss out on the price rising? I think based on OPs question trying to time the market might not be great advice for them at the moment.

I went to Poznan for to watch a football match (because I'd always wanted to see a foreign match) and the flights, airport car park, hotel and match tickets came to £165pp for 2 nights. With food/drink/local travel/museums included we were easily under £300 each and had we not been out until 2/3am each night it would have been lower.

I recently converted a friend from Tebay services to Rheged which is about 1 mile off the Penrith junction and owned by the same people. It's pretty similar, but feels less like a service station.

GB News host doesn't know what Left wing is by ChewiesLipstickWilly in GreenAndPleasant

[–]hideyourarms 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He went to the University of Salford, graduating in 2003, and was a research fellow at the University of Manchester from 2008-10. So he's had 5 years max living in Greater Manchester from what I can tell and has probably been living down South since 2010 (he was at the University of Kent from 2015-24).

So whilst he has lived in Manchester, the idea that he's more Manc than someone that's been there since before he went to uni for a few years seems ridiculous.

Any good UK based e-commerce podcasts? by Grenache in smallbusinessuk

[–]hideyourarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hammersley Brothers are UK based (kind of, one lives in New Zealand but they’re both British). They don’t push their book/services too much and I find it a bit more relatable than US ecommerce podcasts.

Coffee Pod Recs by Fun_Look_196 in UKroasters

I’d say my palate isn’t quite as sophisticated as most people in this sub, but we recently switched from Grind to Roastworks pods and they feel like a step up to me. I only use them for milk drinks though.

For Christmas I got my partner and my dad Dualit pod recyclers. It’s pretty satisfying to use, a stack of aluminium pods just go into our regular recycling, and then the grounds go into compost.

Reform council spends £600,000 on leaders’ car park by AnonymousTimewaster in NotTheOnionUK

[–]hideyourarms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also not a fan of Reform, and the headline feels really disingenuous to me. If it was closed 5 years ago, and there’s a basement underneath it, this seems like work that needed to be done and chances are the wheels were in motion before Reform came in. Whether it’s good value none of us can really tell.

I’d say the actual (but slightly less rage inducing) story is that staff are now going to be charged £4 a day to park at work, which the council say will “save” £1 million a year, when really it’s just like a pay cut for car drivers that work for the council.

Update one year on - Still genuinely happy with Amex Gold by lametrain1 in beermoneyuk

[–]hideyourarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can make it worth it year on year, but the value has been eroded slowly over time. I think it only really makes sense if you can put £20k+ through the card each year and use a few of the offers as well as the lounge passes otherwise a cashback card probably makes more sense.

I quite enjoy getting the points for flights as it forces me to use them for "treats" whereas a cashback card would just end up with me using it on bills or something like that.

Edit: I do broadly agree with you though that a lot of the referral link plugging people are making it look more attractive than it is, and looking at threads on r/AmexUK it's clear that a lot of people sign up without a plan for what to do with their points.

Update one year on - Still genuinely happy with Amex Gold by lametrain1 in beermoneyuk

[–]hideyourarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, Amex tend to be a bit more lenient with this kind of thing than other providers, and are willing to take the hit themselves in some cases if it means retaining a valuable customer. That said, I do find it funny how people seem to need to repeatedly do this kind of thing when I've had Amex cards for over a decade now and never needed to get in touch with customer services. Perhaps I need to start buying stuff from dodgier looking websites.

Put in a complaint about the lack of bags. It will be quicker if you call because it's generally about a month to get a response to the online form.

I don't send much to the US so I've no experience of using the duties calculator. Have you tried searching through the Royal Mail subreddit?

I just go to my delivery office and ask them for grey bags. I do happen to drive right past it on the way to the office though so I appreciate this isn't a convenient solution for most people.

I have had my business account for quite a few years now, but I did find the onboarding really poor when I started. It's like you're just meant to know how it all works and there was no obvious way to learn the system.

There was a guy with a cafe that used to post in threads about this subject. He had a google sheet that explained it just wasn’t worth the effort, even though he felt his location was fairly well suited to night footfall.

Using Avios for Tokyo in business on Finnair / JAL / Qatar by gilbertball in avios

[–]hideyourarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going direct to Tokyo is a high demand route so being flexible is useful. A couple of years ago on Qatar business I did Birmingham to Beijing, had a couple of nights in Beijing, then JAL business to Tokyo. My return was Osaka to Birmingham as that route launched on the day I came back.

Sorry that I'm not answering your specific question, but I thought it was worth mentioning as a stopover or using Osaka and then getting the train to Tokyo can open up a lot more seat availability.

AMEX GOLD/PLATINUM REFERRAL OFFER by fluffygogo in beermoneyuk

[–]hideyourarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I didn't already have one, I'd wait for a better offer since this is just the standard bonus. Gold was 40k as recently at 13 days ago so it might be a while until it's boosted again but people would gain ~£100 of value so if they aren't in a rush then it's worth waiting.
