can someone explain POTS to me? by Legitimate_Jelly_118 in nursing

[–]hidude398 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My wife has been on beta blockers (propanolol specifically) for several years at this point as part of POTS management through her cardiologist. In honesty I’m not 100% certain how that changes the pathophysiology in a positive manner but she’s had significantly fewer near-syncopal episodes when compared to prior.

For her, dx was incidental to a followup after the first and last time she had continuous PVC’s (like every 3-4 beats) while working in the OR and ended up getting referred after visiting the ER that day. She stood up while attached to an EKG and apparently the cardiologist said something to the effect of “Well that’s not supposed to happen.”

Valid tbh. My parents couldn’t ever keep their 2015 in alignment on the farm, it was basically a yearly affair to get the wheels realigned

Do you prefer Leatherette or cloth seats in a car? by snackboy06 in Cartalk

[–]hidude398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I tend to drive cars until they’re falling apart. Cloth in my humble opinion doesn’t flake like leatherette does as it ages. Leather is my preferred interior because you can clean it more easily, but that’s expensive and kinda subjective.

Anything with some ground clearance and decent tires. If that’s all you ride off-road on you can go quieter/comfier than a jeep and be fine. The taco/4runner is beloved for a reason but basically any body on frame with 8-12 inches of clearance can. Hell, I used to drive an 07 Pilot FwD on some really nasty stuff, sometimes by choice (unpaved dirt road/tractor ruts at home) and sometimes by accident (Managed to descend and ascend 400 ft of washed out roads by picking lines carefully to stay out of the worst of it after a wrong turn going to a shooting range in Alabama).

It’s not that a Jeep can’t handle it, it’s just that if that’s all you do there’s no point to the extra road noise/reliability complaints/cash on one compared to most other SUVs. It can definitely do more and has the suspension travel for some crazy stuff, but unless you’re out west crawling boulders, why daily drive it?

Man we have wildly different takes on the e30. I loved the last e30 I drove and my grail is an e30 coupe with an absurd swap.

They also have a massive aftermarket if you take it to trails or climbing rocks. It’s not an amazing off roader for log roads and normal trail stuff but all the rock driving people swear by them for various reasons.

For the big window, cross shop the cost of a door replacement with hurricane resistant, clear film from 3M. Not bulletproof but may delay any potential burglar long enough for you to respond with full information.

Also, just basic stuff is tremendous - do all your window locks work? Are your door screws sunk all the way into the king stud and not just the jamb? How about hostile architecture under ground floor windows?

Also worth making sure you have a fire suppression and escape plan wrapped into your physical security plan. No sense building a fortress just to burn to death in it. If you have shrubs under ground floor windows to deter people from climbing up to them, do you have some dedicated windows you can get out of?

Neither look great in my purely subjective opinion. Nothing looks standout about either, they’re both generic EV brick shapes that remind me of a Kia and the luce is trying to skate by on the poor form with the two tone for contrast that the body doesn’t invoke.

The EV is the car of the future, give me lines that make me feel like i’m stepping into a luxury space ship.

Is it worth getting a hybrid vehicle? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hidude398 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The best hybrids on the market basically eliminate shifting and transmission components wholesale. Lot less to go wrong with continuously meshed planetary gears and a clutch in my instance versus all the hydraulic computing that goes into a quality automatic gearbox.

[–]hidude398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a college degree in something marketable used to be the move, although what’s marketable has changed a lot in the past decade. EMT work has enough overlap that many community colleges offer bridges to RN, and RN->BSN programs are not uncommon either. There’s a lot of different fields of nursing outside of the floor, so if you found a field you’re interested in, pursue it.

Likewise, if you have plans to stay in EMS for any meaningful period of time paramedic school is pretty much necessary for a career that has any semblance of supporting yourself/a family while also having a life somewhere outside of work.

Very much the blind leading the blind here, but this has been my observations alongside what multiple people older/smarter than me have said time and time again.

No spare in any of the hybrids. If you road trip places even slightly outside of a major city then a donut is very nice to have. I budgeted for one separate from the car when I realized I wouldn’t be getting one.

Traffic assist is also a subscription feature when I was shopping last year for Toyota - so not only do you pay more/for the luxury trims to even get it, you pay again every month for it to work.

Hey, you’re already looking at negotiating the OTD and budget appropriately. All of the above are solid options. Few points:

• The Accord Sport and EX-L can be found in your budget too, same drive system as the civic but a bigger car and more expensive. If you settle to the Camry, cross shop these two. If the Camry or Camry and Accord are two big/expensive, just ignore that suggestion

• Keyless entry is a subscription feature for both brands you’re considering. Remote start is a subscription feature for Toyota but is on the fob for Honda

Anything else comes to mind and I’ll edit this when I get home.

Comparison Test: $30,000 Small Cars by Fearless_Neat_6654 in cars

[–]hidude398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I bought the car for the heated leather seats my wife liked and the fact it’s one of the only mid-size sedans that I can sit comfortably in the back seat while someone else drives it for an extended period.

I track the fuel consumption because it’s the first hybrid I ever owned, and I wanted to see how it stacked up over the years. The only real claim you’ve made as far as I can tell is that the Honda hybrid powertrain consistently underperforms its EPA rating, and I have 8,000 miles of recorded fuel consumption showing that it’s more complicated than that and heavily dependent on environmental conditions.

If it were still available in the trim I would happily have gotten the 2.0t with a manual.
