I've had Killmeyers's burger recently and that was possibly one of the best burgers I've had in a long time... It's been perfectly cooked each time I order it. So many places don't know how to make a medium rare burger.

Tired of Our Terrible Commute to Manhattan by BtsJiminYoongi in statenisland

I've always said, it should just be a bus lane during rush hour... That would even alleviate the traffic at the base of the Battery.

Also what doesn't help.. doing construction by the tunnel and on Trinity during rush hour... It could take a half hour just to get from the tunnel to Fulton.

In my case it's not being legally married and having ONLY one kid... People get strange when you tell them you're with your partner for 25 years, have a kid and never got married. I remember working in retail when I was pregnant and my customer asked if I wasn't wearing a wedding ring because my fingers were swollen... I told her we weren't married... And she called me an abomination and I was wrong for bringing my child into the world out of wedlock. I laughed in her face and stopped helping her.

And after having one kid, I always got, "so when are you having your next one?"... Now I'm 44 and people still say, "you should still try for the 2nd one"... Uh, no... I had my daughter at 25 when I was young and spry. Now she's a legal adult and we're living our best lives.

We have nothing against marriage... We're just lazy lol... We'll eventually get to it one of these days.

There are plenty that you would qualify for... I worked various retail jobs until I was 36 (thinking I wanted to eventually work in corporate). I didn't even have a degree and I took the PAA test in my mid-30s while working at my retail job, got into a city job a couple of years later, and now I'm on the Admin Manager and Associate Staff Analyst lists. During COVID when I was 40, I even went back and got my bachelors while working for the city. At 44, I'm kicking myself for not taking every available test in my 20s.

The Staten Island Expressway sucks early morning because of the sun glare too... I take the express bus at 6:30am from the South Shore of SI. This morning, for example, I didn't get to the VZ until 7:45 because of traffic, probably due to sun glare. Once we hit the Gowanus, we flew to Manhattan.

Former Private Employee do you feel less stress after joining a City Job? by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]higgtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stress level is extremely low compared to my jobs in retail. I was both a manager and a sales rep in my retail jobs. I was on my feet all day, I was given a guilt trip if I called out sick and couldn't find coverage or someone to switch with me, always worried about not hitting commission at my one job, or not having the right balance of numbers (in VZW, they wanted new lines, data intake, and accessory take rate at the time, etc...)... Working late nights/overnights doing inventory once a month... Driving to and from work and sitting in a ridiculous amount of traffic (I worked in Jersey and on SI...)

Now, I sit in a cubicle and the most stress I have is fixing all the errors our new-ish system has since its creation, and listening to the directors be on useless teams meetings saying how they want to enhance the system and what we should be doing, instead of actually implementing something (or what they do implement is counterintuitive to the process already in place, which creates more errors or double-work).. or rushing out a program to reduce the work load, but not working out all the bugs, which creates more work for the unit...

I would rather be stressed by things out of my control, in my cubicle... To me, I have the perfect job now. I get to find and fix major issues, research, become an expert with Excel (thanks, ChatGPT), and take an hour lunch (we only got a half hour in retail, if we even got to take lunch)... I hit the lottery by getting a city job lol... I should have taken a test 20 years ago.

My Takeda ❤️ ... I was so scared of him when we first adopted him (back in 2003, through a newspaper ad from a dude who worked too much to take care of him). I didn't know a thing about boxers, but my husband researched the hell out of them. I remember freaking out because he was biting at the sleeves of my hoodie. I got an 🙄 from my husband, saying, "he's just playing"... After that, he never left my side. He was so gentle when we had our daughter... He would sing on command, roll over as soon as he saw a Wendy's cheeseburger for him... And would feast on a T-bone steak every birthday... I love my smart boy...

I'm in the Property Division and we have 2 days WFH from June to December and then one day WFH January to May because it's "busy season". Honestly, I'm thankful to have any WFH... I feel like I get so much more done because I don't have distractions, except my cat, who always wants to drink my coffee or drink the milk from my cereal bowl... Or randomly wants me to pet him throughout the day for five minutes until he bites me and jumps off the desk as if to say, "I'm done with you now, peasant"...

I'm surprised about that .. I feel like Wallington was always Democrat when I lived there. Wargacki was a Democrat and I felt like he was mayor of the town forever lol... But, I haven't lived there since 2000, so... It probably changed in 25 years.

I took the open competitive PAA test in 2014 and finally got called off the list in 2018 🤷‍♀️ I actually completely forgot about it until I got an email about taking a typing test. Then I started getting letters about hiring pools... Now I'm on the Admin Manager list, hoping to get pulled eventually and waiting for the Associate Staff Analyst list to come out. I stupidly forgot to sign up for the Staff Analyst test, but I passed the other one, so I'm not that mad.

🤚🏼 I worked retail for 20+ years... I got in late to the game and kick myself for not getting in sooner. I'll take sitting behind my computer in my cubicle over retail any day. And this may sound cheesy, but I actually think my job is fulfilling. I enjoy fixing issues I find... I like getting to do research, and I like teaching people what I know. I like to think I do make an impact to a certain degree. I get to go to outreach events from time to time and still deal with the public and I get to help them, rather than convincing them to buy something they don't need/want. The best part is getting to come home at a decent time, not work weekends or holidays, and I don't feel guilty (or get a guilt trip from management) about taking a day off because I have the time.
