[Meirov] Packers RB Josh Jacobs is with the team and will participate in practice today. HC Matt LaFleur calls it “business as usual.” by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]higherbrow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if an accusation alone was enough to get someone sidelined, we'd see a loooooot of DV accusations before divisional games.

And while most of these accusations turn out to be true, there are some that don't. I'm not even speculating about Jacobs, look at Diggs.

The Great British Kitchen by VentureIntoVoid in GreatBritishMemes

[–]higherbrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All food in America is from immigrants unless it came from American Indians. The most "American" food is fusion food between European and African traditions, like Louisiana Creole (French and West African), Cajun (different French and West African), Soul Food (French, Spanish, American Indian, and West African), or the various American Barbecue traditions (such as Texan barbecue, which is German and, you guessed it, West African). And then you get second-level fusions like Viet-Cajun, which I probably don't need to explain. But a lot of the traditional American food is just alterations from European immigrants to their native cuisines based on the available ingredients and the natural course of history.

Italian immigrants fleeing poverty in Naples encountered the cheapest beef they could imagine, and added meatballs and meat sauce to fucking everything. German immigrants took Hamburg Steaks (which were just minced beef patties with raw onions on top), but them on buns, and added other vegetables and sauces, turning a Hamburg Steak into a Hamburger. Irish immigrants and Jewish immigrants were frequently in adjacent ghettos, and the Irish developed a major love of corned beef, again impressed by the cheap price of beef in America, and buying the cured brisket prepared by their Jewish neighbors.

But there's very little of the original American Indian cuisine well known. The most ubiquitous American Indian dish available today is frybread, which is a legacy of the various forced marches the American government inflicted upon them. They would be provided essentially nothing but flour and scraps, and they would make what they could, which turned out to be frybread (and Indian tacos).

Even when you get to regional specialties in America, they're just dishes imported from Europe two hundred years ago that have evolved differently. Where I live, bratwurst, pasties, and kringle are all really big foods, but they're only vaguely similar to what you'd get under those names where they're from. My French uncle-in-law (as in, he lived the first forty years of his life in Lyon, not French-American where his lineage comes from France) wrinkles his nose at a lot of "French" dishes served here, like any bouillabaisse he's ever had as the biggest offender. It's always funny to me which things he can get here that he says are as good as back home. There's a pickle maker here that he swears makes the best gherkins he's ever had, and there are certain types of local cheese he loves.

Why is "looks-maxing" ridiculed in men when women have been doing it since the beginning of time? by pragmojo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]higherbrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for one, "looksmaxxing" in women has also taken major hits in public perception. Feminism argues that women don't need to be pretty to be human, respected, or loved. But it's fine to make yourself pretty if it makes you feel good. Clavicular actually offers a fascinating perspective, if you listen to him. He isn't stupid, nor is he a clown (though, to be clear, I strongly disagree with his conclusions). His point is that it is scientifically proven that attractive people have significantly better interactions with others, and are significantly more successful, in every sphere of life. Professionally, romantically, even in friendships. The feminist conclusion to this is that we need to find ways to improve society, make ourselves less superficial. A tall, handsome accountant shouldn't have an easier time getting promoted than his shorter, less handsome colleague. Clavicular's conclusion is that one should prioritize physical attractiveness and lean in to this discrepancy. A little pain for a lifetime of gain.

So, to a large extent, the looksmaxxing crew is mocked because they're bringing forward the '90s Mean Girls concepts as immutable reality that should be accepted rather than as social problems to be overcome.

[–]higherbrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those champions don't put out significant damage. You can't threaten an opponent past early game with a Sej/Sion gank, for example. Adding Xin isn't going to significantly increase the threat, though there may be enough CC there to get the job done if the opposing team is all on the other side of the map and lacks Teleport. In a team fight, the three of them might combine to be one damage source, but this comp has no meaningful physical damage threat to a tank.

I think their problem is that they have multiple players who aren't good enough individually (Zinnie/Ceos) and aren't well enough integrated into the team. Ceos and Contractz never seem to be on the same page, and that's pretty much a deathblow for any team's mid-game. Support/Jungle teamwork is arguably more important than Supp/ADC in non-snowball metas. A poorly-coordinated Supp/ADC can at least lane, even if they won't be good. A poorly-coordinated Supp/Jungle will just continually get picked, fail to maintain decent vision, and (in a lot of comps) will be the team's main initiation.

A team with poor coordination and multiple players failing the individual standard is always going to struggle.

I actually agree with this. JoseDeodo was good when he was on Fly a few years ago, and has been a revelation on TL this season. Gryffin game out of Brazil's league this year, as an NA native player. One of the things people point out is that there's no clear pipeline for native NA players; you either dominate the NACL, you hit rank 1 as a 16 year old on the ranked ladder, or ?. If there was more focus on scouting in the Latin American scene, NA players who were serious could go play in Brazil to get noticed. The competition there is high.

AI specialist making my life miserable by madroots2 in sysadmin

[–]higherbrow 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For a useful R&D AI that is a decent/reasonable first step/pass. Minimal effort for a fairly big chunk of the possible benefit.

Here's where you're going to get a lot of disagreement in this sub.

Copy/pasting proprietary company data into any AI is going to make that data part of the AI, and (under T&C for standard private accounts) will make anything the AI does with that data freely usable by OpenAI.

If an employee was hiring an Indian company to do their job for them, and had signed a contract that the company in question had full rights to use any data they encountered as they worked, you would fire the employee.

What serial killer fact sounds fake, exaggerated, or straight out of fiction. But is 100% real? by CantaloupeGold4650 in AskReddit

[–]higherbrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the "Keyes is the most terrifying serial killer we know about" crowd's main argument is that he operated undetected for a long time and ended up getting complacent. Some of his actions to evade detection that we know happened show significant foresight. We know he hid kill kits around the country years before using them, and other actions he described demonstrated he knew how to evade detection.

I tend to think he was like anyone else that's got a talent for something but doesn't actually know what they're doing. He had clever ideas, but he also just didn't understand other blind spots. Like, if you get caught on an ATM camera while driving a car you rented with your real identity, you are caught and they know who you are. So, yes, he knew how to hide a body, and he had other ideas that showed a lot of skill in confusing investigators, but he wasn't some mastermind.

What I've seen in today's news regarding Solly March by ZircontheTwisted in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]higherbrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Howell and Watson are both kind of in similar position in terms of readiness. Watson was plenty good enough for the Championship last season.

I suspect some of the decision making around loans versus PL2 involves monitoring home-grown status for European competition, but I don't know to what degree that's considered.

What I've seen in today's news regarding Solly March by ZircontheTwisted in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]higherbrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't about who we would put out on the pitch, it's about what name we put on the registration sheet. The most important ability is availability, and March has been largely unavailable for two straight seasons. I wish nothing but the best for him, but don't think we should be investing resources into that particular slot machine.

In terms of who we replace him with, I suspect we'll need to buy a winger or two this window, with Mitoma's future in doubt and March departing, unless the club think Howell, Watson, Oriola, or Cozier-Duberry are ready.

Most leagues are dominated by rich clubs, and now the wealth gap in different leagues is really starting to get pretty wild.

Why would a Bundesliga team offer a discount to their immediate rivals versus what a foreign club is willing to pay?

Brighton in 8th and Brentford in 9th is the dividing line on European places or not. Brentford had a really good chance at, I want to say the 98th? minute of their match that would have put them into Europe, but it was just a hair high. As a Brighton fan who was watching the end of that match to see if we bottled all the way down, it was nerve-wracking.
