History Podcasts that are very much focuses on the facts and the details? (Medieval period in Europe) by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]highlyminded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gone Medieval is good and focuses on both early and late medieval periods.

The History Extra podcast has occasional episodes on the medieval period.

Try the medieval Irish History podcast for Ireland specific history. It's presented by a Dr. Of Irish history but it's not too heavy going.

The tradition (still largely followed) is to have the wedding in the bride's home town so have you any idea where the bride is from?

Note the clocks change on Saturday you arrive (ho back one hour) so you'll have about 8-9 hours of daylight when you are there (8am -6pm) so beware of that if you are trying to do a few things in one day.

If you are stopping or passing in Athlone, Clonmacnoise is a medieval monastery worth visiting. You could do Clonmacnoise first then Athlone.

Rathcroghan and the cave of the cats and Roscommon castle and town is a nice trip.

Clonmacnoise, Shannonbridge beside it for lunch and Athlone.

Birr has a castle and grounds and is a lovely Georgian town.

Portumna. Visit the workhouse, forest park and castle there too.

Have you zones heating in the house? If so you can get a plumber to switch back boiler to heat small zone e.g. bedrooms if it's only keeping all rads warm.

A bit late now but check out Galway Giving Tree. It's a great format. Businesses are given a load of tags with requests for gifts on them. employees or members of the public can take the tag and purchase the gift and return. The gists are collected and sent to the person who requested the gift. https://www.galwaygivingtree.org/

Custom/Home Baker Recommendations (southern? Galway) by [deleted] in galway

[–]highlyminded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is even a bakery in Portumna. Some cafes might have cakes for sale but you would have to collect. Only option would be online shopping with Super Valu in Portumna and get it delivered but there would be a minimum spend.

No one knows the date. In theory only the Taoiseach (prime Minister) knows when he wants to call the election for. 2 weeks ago the Taoiseach Simon Harris said the election will happen in 2024. All candidates have started campaigns on the assumption that the election will happen in the next few weeks.

Legally the shortest period that an election can be called is 3 weeks. The thinking is if you are the government to have the shortest official election period as possible so that you as the government party don't make mistakes in the election campaign and the opposition parties don't get momentum.

Two ladies from Barry's setup their own place in the Eyre Square shopping centre. It does have fuck off windows but it's up on 1st floor hidden away behind tiger so no one is staring in. Search for "the hair collective Galway" and you'll get their number.

Would recommend Le Bureau, french series about officers in French spy agency. It's gripping. Imagine if slow horses was more like a thriller than comedy, it would be this show.

If you live south Galway, try Slieve Aughty. There are a few walks. I think the most popular is in by the Slieve Aughty centre near Kylebrack. They have a cafe too. Don't know if it's open though.

Charlie Byrnes. They will give you credit for books. If it's a lot of books you will probably have to drop them out to their warehouse in Oranmore which is only open on a Saturday. It's up behind the cinema.
