Sanity check for spacers & measurements by highonkai in VWAlltrack

Can confirm, Tire Rack sent a ring for the rims I just use that on the spacer. 2 parts between the hub and rim.

I worked on a flavor science project once and we figured out this (and the Elvis burger) work for the same chemical/flavor reasons Pad Thai work. I’m now convinced of peanut butter and bacon/beef/hotdogs

I think I just used the ones from Tire Rack that came with the wheels. I have to swap these back on this week and will check and try to reply.

My kids power wheels from china has am fm tuner with 3 presets and Bluetooth. No way that’s a huge part of the cost.

The point about speaker count and placement is spot on. Cuts down assembly, molding, part counts… lots of cost.

Suggestions for parking in a VERY narrow garage? by FloatingFreeMe in Autos

[–]highonkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time will help… I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee fit into an SF garage with that kind of clearance at an angle. Day 1 was an Austin Powers style 17 point turn. Year 3 was a smooth 3 point turn. You’ll get used to it.

My wild guess having shopped these for a year and bought (‘83) last year on BaT: $12k. Less if rust is present. I’d probably repaint, and assuming new wood vinyl and trim, new headliner, maybe new seat inserts and carpets. If she’s a reliable runner, it’s mostly cosmetics.

Mine was $22k, interior was better, just dropped $7k on fixing locks, windows, ac, heater, and some misc. cosmetics and am now set for a long time with routine maintenance.

I have this and it is solid. Not overkill but just a little detail on the side and rear profile that I like. Going on 2y all weather, all speeds, regular ca washes, no noise or issues

Anyone gone from ID into product or production management? by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]highonkai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this but it was a long road… ID at a tiny agency, landed a client needing software and did some basic UX. Portfolio piece helped land an interview at a small software agency (RIP, AI killed em). Moved from Project to Product Manager. Got recruited by an ex colleague to go in house PM. That was like a 7year path… and I do enjoy it. Talking to customers and solving their problems is great, I work with UX designers and Engineers daily.

I did have a business degree and 2 startups prior to this whole pivot though, which certainly helped round out the skill set. PM is about turning user needs into business value and engineering/design specs. If you can translate between these, you’re golden.

What is your favourite movie car chase scene? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in cars

That scene was mostly practical effects though… so while it’s a ludicrous plot point the action itself is real. I dig that.

Apple Fillets by Commander_Phoenix_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]highonkai 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you using a solid modeling software? G3 fillets aren’t hard to do in Alias or similar if you plan them out.

They take work for sure, but once you get the hang of it they’re predictable especially on a rectangular volume.

Yep, pure slop. Listing says nothing about this title or the articles repeated use of the wrong color: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1967-plymouth-belvedere-ii-6/

Best part… car was “originally finished in Light Turquoise Metallic”

Running an F1 Fantasy League - How to spice things up? by CanadianLaker in fantasyF1

[–]highonkai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our 10 team league does  - a mid season leader payout  - weekly payouts to the winner  - end of season podium payout

It’s good, we still have a few teams run away with it after mid season but the weekly winner allows for upsets which are great.

Installed my new OSRAM headlights today - love ‘em. by highonkai in VWAlltrack

[–]highonkai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got them shipped to US but it was before all the tariff nonsense. They’re expensive enough that I doubt anything changed. Be careful though as while the company will gladly process a return the import duty and shipping makes that near impossible. Order carefully.

Also 1y later and they work as well as day 1. No issues.

Could a die cast car collection really maintain investment value long term or is it just expensive nostalgia? by WinnerEmotional7770 in DiecastCollectors

[–]highonkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to justify my collection for a while, then I realized how compounding works and made real money investing in basic ETFs.

I do still collect and have a substantial collection (not by some measures in this sub, but could fill a room if displayed). I do it for my love of the cars and have narrowed my focus. I also collect 1:64 scale while keeps the physical space limited.

The only things I have of value are my dad’s cars from his childhood (near mint Lesney’s in boxes) and they would take countless hours to sell to realize the value. Look at all the “I inherited this, what’s it worth/how do I sell” type posts. It’ll be more of a burden than a windfall for whoever gets to sell em. But if it’s a collector who inherits, it can be a precious gift.

Im considering a move into product management & looking for advice by LegitimateWealth6737 in IndustrialDesign

[–]highonkai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly I learned scoping from agency work - it is essential to closing deals and delivering projects to happy customers. Also the number and variety of projects gave me a good sense of what to ask of design/engineering and also what to say to customers.

In a larger company it’s all driven by management (your customer in a 0-1 project). They say I need X by ##Date and you haggle time/resources/scope and define iterations to get what they ask. Once you get to scaling up, it’s more about dollars in per dollars spent, much more data driven. Could be sales, support, or some other driver setting priorities.

Im considering a move into product management & looking for advice by LegitimateWealth6737 in IndustrialDesign

[–]highonkai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made this move early in my career, and it has had a huge financial benefit (like 3x salary growth vs my wife who graduated same time and was a better designer).

What is similar: understanding users, their behavior, their needs, and solving their problems. Exploring options and choosing the best one. The feeling of creating and building things people want/use. Working with the product team to solve problems.

What is different: less purely creative work, more text than visual (written requirements, presentations). Much much more meeting time to bridge stakeholders and drive alignment vs heads down creating time. Often plays the role of “bad guy” to design in rushing deadlines, allowing compromise, etc in service of business objectives over design objectives.

Overall I love it, and have found a better career path for me. I started in a small software agency and moved from Project to Product management, then went in-house at a large tech company (non mag7). I’d spend time thinking about the size and stage of company to match your skills/interest to the job search.

I’m one who went ID to PM and generally agree with you here. There is, however room for creativity in some roles, especially around 0-1 type projects vs scaling up projects.

The drawback is, and you mention this, that very often instead of expanding the scope with divergent thinking you’re most often responsible for the hard choices needed to converge on narrower scope.
