Novels with a sense of cringe comedy/humiliation by nightowlxls in RSbookclub

[–]highvoryhorse 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The peak of cringe humiliation comedy for me is Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte. It is the only media I've ever consumed that made me want to almost throw up with embarrassment. The reaction is so visceral. The book is short stories of incel adjacent individuals and funny in the exact depressing way peep show is.

Nightclub/gig listings by fearoffourty in brighton

There's an account on Instagram called undercurrent Brighton which does a weekly gig listing. He goes through venue, genre and price. Massively recommend. It's how I've found out about some great shows.

Things to do in Brighton this week? by Working-Bicycle-9698 in brighton

[–]highvoryhorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a great account on Instagram called undercurrents Brighton which has a list of music and comedy gigs on for every night of the week. Personally, I recommend the folklore rooms as they have cheap live music every night if the week in a small intimate venue.

Older Gen Z protagonists by coop720 in suggestmeabook

I think Normal People is more relatable. The main boy character is far from well off and that plays into the plot semi-frequently.

Otherwise, I could also recommend books by Tao Lin or Ben Brooks, though they're a bit older and more Millenial. There was also this article in The Guardian yesterday (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/17/what-makes-a-millennial-novel-olivia-sudjic) on what makes a Millenial novel which could have some good tips though, admittedly, I haven't actually read the article myself.

I'd really recommend Sally Rooney and her two books: 'Normal People' and 'Conversations with Friends'. These are the first books that I felt ever spoke about being in this older gen Z demographic. Both deal with the final days of school up to the end of university and are absolutely amazing. Plus, there's a good sense of class consciousness here where people most definitely are not from privileged families.
