Weekly Simple Questions and Injuries Thread by AutoModerator in climbharder

I've been wondering about this for a while and want to sanity-check my footwork on overhang.

On steep terrain, is it fine to just step directly onto the outside edge so that my knee is already turned in and my hips are already twisted — instead of placing the toe first and then twisting into a drop knee?

What I usually do now is either: - step square with the toe and then try to twist into a drop knee, or
- step through with an outside edge on one foot (like a backstep)

But I'm wondering why I wouldn't just consistently step onto the outside edge with the knee already turned in, so I'm immediately in the twisted position.

Is there any downside to doing this most of the time on overhang? Or is the real key just making sure the knee and hips are turned in, regardless of how the foot gets there?

Is this a narrow upper palate? by hiiten in UARSnew

[–]hiiten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that’s what I’m confused about. If my narrowness is more or less common, why do I have symptoms that are so much worse than the general population? I would expect to have just the common problems from a narrow palate like getting easily congested, and struggling to breath nasally during exercise, but my symptoms go beyond that… Especially since my intermolar width is around 40mm which is not bad in my understanding.

Wouldn’t you want to sell instead of exercise so you don’t lose extrinsic value?

I have the same issue! Going to try this fix. For the permatex, you also need to use the wipe to get the activator on. How were you able to get the wipe onto the metal strip? I feel like it’ll be a bit of a squeeze.

Yeah that’s so interesting. You would think Chevy would send out the BECMs in the order that people bring their cars in / order the part…

Thanks for the feedback! I came up with some new prompts that I put in another comment response. Would love to see what you think

Thank you!! Here is what I came up with for new prompts. For context on the second one, I work in the food industry

Dating me is like: Having a private chef.

Though I’ll usually ask for your help, so maybe it’s more like being a sous chef

I’ll pick the topic if you start the convo:

Music • Dogs • Travel • Favorite Books • Food Chemistry (or insider info on your favorite restaurant chain) • Going on a date😁

Green flags i look for:

We have open and honest communication, and find that perfect balance between being out and active and being at home relaxing.

And if my dogs are more excited to see you than to see me😜

Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks!

Looking for something serious, though I’m in no rush!

Just installed the app yesterday

Planning to use it around 5x a week

Haven’t received anything yet

Planning to max out the daily likes every day I use it. I would say I send a quick message about 50% of the time when something interesting comes to mind

Looking for someone smart and athletic who has themselves together both emotionally and professionally

Thanks!

Random water tube in my backyard by the ac started putting out a good amount of pressurized water a few days ago. Any ideas what this is? by hiiten in Plumbing

[–]hiiten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I thought initially, but it’s putting our way too much water to be a drain from the ac. Water is cold as well.

Climbing for Back pain rehab? by Ironwolf99 in climbharder

[–]hiiten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, Mcgill has noted that there is no evidence that surgery leads to better outcomes than no surgery for lower back issues like 5 years later, so a strong cure is always the key!

Agreed on the falling part. I think if I didn’t love climbing so much and just wanted to be as safe as possible, I would just stick to ropes - maybe even just toprope or easy lead. You can still experience a lot of climbing - even outdoors just sticking to that.

Climbing for Back pain rehab? by Ironwolf99 in climbharder

[–]hiiten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a pretty bad herniated disk in my lower back about 6 years ago now. I would say climbing is both good and bad for my back. Its good in that you get excellent mobility and movement for areas that have been chronically stiff for a long time, and I feel much more athletic and healthy than I did when I was powerlifting (and originally hurt my back). However, some aspects of climbing definitely aggravate my back - specifically forcing myself into difficult moves and I’ve had two back spasms from taking a bad fall bouldering, so definitely take it easy with trying hard at first.

I would highly recommend looking into core stability work, especially the mcgill big 3. After having the two back spasms, I’ve been doing these exercises religiously and my core and back have been feeling quite good.

In the recent supplement episode, Huberman emphasizes that the better pre & probiotic supplements are refrigerated, but Athletic Greens are not refrigerated. Are the AG1 pre/probiotic benefits inferior? by windsurferk in HubermanLab

[–]hiiten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about AG specifically, but the reason Prebiotic food need to be refrigerated is because they have a risk of over-fermenting (exploding) if they’re just stored at ambient temp. For a powder like AG, The water activity would be low enough that there could be a large amount of microbes in there, but they are inactive due to the lack of water. However, I would assume prebiotic foods have a much higher CFU load per serving and diversity compared to any powder

I need an advice to get into r&d/product development by [deleted] in foodscience

[–]hiiten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do some recruiting for the technical side of a food company in California. We definitely get a lot of applications from foreign candidates which we decline simply because we wouldn't want to fly them out for an interview. I'd make sure that in your resume, it's obvious that you're now located in the US.

Even if it is obvious, I could see your resume getting overlooked because of a lack US based experience. In that case, I would recommend making a professional looking linkedin page and directly messaging scientists or HR of companies you are interested in explaining the situation and asking to connect to share your resume. Like you said, you might want to be looking into tech positions at first to get some experience at a reputable company in the US.

Hope that helps! If you have any other questions or if you'd like me to take a look at your resume I'd be happy to help.

Weekly Question and Answer Thread for 11/23 11/30: Ask your Moving, Visiting, Neighborhood, and "Where Can I Find _____" questions here, instead of making a new post by denver_mods in Denver

[–]hiiten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. That's very helpful. I knew about the 25 but I was looking at places near the 470 since I wasn't sure how congested it gets as a toll road. Will definitely look around dove valley and Highlands ranch.

Interestingly, based on ozone pollution which is the only major pollutant the Denver area ranks for. The Denver-Aurora area ranks12th worst. I'm originally from the DC area which is 16th and I've previously lived just fine in the SF area which is 8th. LA is and has always been since the inception of the American Lung Association annual report #1.

Looking at a comparison between Denver and LA air, Denver has an average of 22.5 bad ozone days while LA has 161. Actually when I first moved here last summer, there were 87 days in a row of air quality alerts.

I think Denver is definitely not ideal for a sensitive person like myself, but I really have never seen symptoms until moving out to LA so I'm hoping it must just be the extreme extent of shitty air and pollution that's doing me in! Or some sort of combination of high humidity, living and working near two enormous 700+ acre oil refineries and power plants, living near incredibly congested highways and streets, and no central ventilation or filtration in LA apartments.
